Ships Diamondback Explorer Owners Club

I switched to DBX several days ago after making 550 kylies in AspX and 350 kylies in Phantom. The main goal was to squeeze some more jump range since my exploration style is more about highs and lows of the Galaxy rather than dense areas.

My impressions so far:
  • she jumps 68.3 Ly which is over 2 Ly farther than Phantom using the same modules (most of the core modules just moved from the Phantom, they are not extremely engineered)
  • the canopy view is much nicer comparing to Phantom
  • no more stupid lights in front of my face
  • she's more agile both in supercruise and in normal space
  • she runs cool
  • she sounds good
  • she can land almost everywhere

but

  • 4A scoop is almost three times slower than 5A so she requires scooping at maximum flow to not die of old age during the process... which means much bigger risk of a mishap
  • she shakes during scoop so much that I got nausea (!) and had to switch the "reduce camera movements" option on for the first time ever!

Anyway, thanks to reduced shaking and DSS (there is something to do during the scooping process) I like this ship very much. I'm absolutely sure that it's gonna be a long relationship and hundreds of kylies are ahead of us. :)

She runs that cold though you could park up by a star and use the fss scanner whilst scooping. Thats what i do. She won't shake then either

With any ship, if you keep heat below 66% then it will sit forever by the star without burning up. With a DBX that gives you about 80% fuel flow.

That doesn't sound right. DBX is one of the coolest running ships in the game. In my experience, with an A rated power plant it can easily scoop at 100% rate without overheating.

If a DBX overheats before reaching max scooping rate it has to be running a lower efficiency power plant - either not A rated or with overcharged mod.

I usually make full slowdown in super cruise at ~80% scooping efficiency (extra safety measure to aviod overheating) and then I go to the kitchen to grab something, fuel tank is usually full when I go back ;)

Great little ship, the DBX. It's inexpensive and just big enough to get just about any job done. Really easy to find parking near the Guardian sites, too.

With a bit of a practice you're perfectly capable of scooping at 100% flow and staying at 62-66% temperature (my ship is equipped with 3A power plant, level 4 Low Emissions with Thermal Spread).

So, while it's not really an issue that could disqualify DBX in any way, after spending almost three years with 5A scoop paired with 5C fuel tank, it's a significant step back. The worst situation is when you jump with almost no fuel into a system with no planets (no reason to play with DSS). Then there is nothing to do during the following 2 minutes, you can just sit and watch the fuel level going up ridiculously slow. o_O

When travelling great distances i turn off all non essential modules like sensors, power distributor, shields, repair limpets, amfu, vehicle hanger ect, seems to help quite a bit. i scoop at about 50-55%. I do run with a 16t tank though

Nice! I also turn off all not necessary stuff but in my case it's not possible to stay at 50-55% level while scooping at 100% rate. More heat-dispersion-efficient engineering of your ship?

The efficiency of PP 3A is 0.16 for Lvl4+TS and 0.13 for Lvl5+TS. Not sure if it's enough to lower the temperature by whole 10%. Maybe different thrusters engineering? Dirty Drives greatly increase power consumption and thus temperatures.

I think on a different thread i asked if cold drives made much difference in super cruise and was told that dirty drives actually ran colder in super cruise.

Quote from Innocentius 'This misinformation for some reason just keeps on repeating again and again. In supercruise the only effect from your thrusters that affects your heat is their overall power usage. As clean drives actually use more power than dirty drives, they are hotter in supercruise than dirty drives, not the other way around. The small cooling effect that the clean drives has only affects temperatures in normal space outside supercruise.'

Maybe i just have more stuff turned of then you? i use 73.8% of power from the 3a power plant.

I would show screenshots but i don't know how you upload them from a ps4

It's a nimble, flexible and surprisingly capable little ship. Piloted one during the Distant Worlds 2 expedition last year. Did Hull Seal missions, ran escort (there were hostile NPCs in one planetbound POI outside the bubble) , explored, undertook mining and bounty missions in one CG.

Superb jump range, excellent cockpit view and great handling characteristics. In an expedition where anything could and did happen the DBX was a great choice.

I love this ship too. Did having such a small fuel scoop bother you on such a long trip like Distant Worlds 2?
