Some graphics settings questions for new VR guy

Define "options" - game options, Oculus app options, some other options? Turning down game brightness in Skyrim made things worse, because the backlight is still blasting at 100%. So for right now I actually turned UP brightness in Skyrim to reduce "god ray" (smeared glasses) effect, but that detracts from the atmospheric feel.
Turn both of these down for VR.

n.b. that's in EDProfiler

I had PSVR for a month, and I had mixed feelings about it. Most of my gripes (low resolution, low-quality graphics) will likely be addressed by the Rift S. I absolutely LOVED playing Skyrim in VR, and I just bought the PC version at 70% Steam sale. I also grabbed Subnautica, a train simulator for VR, and I'll be downloading DCS when my 2nd hard drive arrives. I'm still on the fence about X-plane for VR, as it's a bit more expensive... I'll probably spend the next couple of days browsing Steam's VR catalog, as my headset won't arrive until the middle of next week.
I have X-Plane and to me it's worth the price, but I am aviation enthusiast and it is basically a pilot training sim at heart. You think the learning curve is high for EliteD, then check the manual for x-plane:p Also of note imo you need to have a lot of dedicated storage for all the scenery downloads that are out there. You can literally download the whole globe and fly anywhere with true to life airports, strips and back water bush hopper sites. Of course you need a machine to run it properly if you want to use all the goodies like addons, exclusive planes,xtra scenery etc..

DCS is pretty good too, for some reason I get a lot of cockpit glitches and I still haven't pinpointed why. I have the free version and it's worth the HD space I think.

Btw, Ima downloading IL Sturmovik as I type this, Holy jeez how did I miss that one? That was a great suggestion Glen!

If you'

re into skyrim VR I whole heartedly recommend getting Asgard's wrath from the oculus store its basically Skyrim if it was built from the ground up to be VR and is absolutely amazing.
I had my eye on that last weekend and I thought that looked like Aela in the release video lol. The combat looks similar to Gorn which is ton of fun..don't forget to set your guardian system up for that one though...

Definately have guardian set up i really like the combat although depending on the difficulty setting its either very defensive or full on aggressive combat

Unfortunately we're out of luck when it comes to Skyrim - I have the in-game gamma set to a few notches above minimum so I get the contrast to make it seem a bit dark. Setting to minimum just gives the grey blackness.

If it's any consolation, with the original Rift I got true inky darkness but there was dark banding which was different in each eye, so deep black bits in dungeons didn't look that great.

I believe there is an ENB for SkyrimVR that makes things a bit darker, but I haven't tried it. I've just come to accept that my Dragonborn ate a lot of carrots in their youth :)

Is there any way to control the brightness of the Rift's LCD backlight? I'm not talking about gamma, but actual emitted light, like the brightness control for my monitor. While I don't have serious problems with the dark space in ED, the dungeons of Skyrim look washed out / smudgy due to the lens glare, something I think could easily be fixed by dialing back the LCD brightness. This lens flare / glare / fog / Fresnel effect is probably my biggest complaint about the Rift S.

Skyrim runs through SteamVR, which does have some settings which can be modified with a text editor, but I do not know whether those are used with Oculus headsets:

Code:
    "steamvr" : {
        "hmdDisplayColorGainB" : 1,
        "hmdDisplayColorGainG" : 1,
        "hmdDisplayColorGainR" : 1
    }

This ENB injected post processing profile does wonders for LCD headsets:

...and a good lighting mod really enhances the ambience in dungeons:

Next ED-specific question: How do I increase the number of stars in the skybox?

I'm surprised how good the skybox looks at the lower pixel density of VR, but now that it's bigger, the spaces between the visible stars is also bigger, and now space feels a bit empty. I can look up in my own IRL sky and see a much greater star density than I can in the vacuum of ED space. I'm pretty sure there's something that can be placed in my graphics override file, but I need the specific code.

Thanks!!!

I think you're looking for:

<StarInstanceCount>80000</StarInstanceCount>

...with whatever number you want.

What's the default StarInstanceCount, and do I insert this in any other parent wrapper, or just this XML all by itself?

I have heard of some VR games that have for some peculiar reason capped themselves to the one's primary monitor frame rat

Yes it happens and It's not just VR, It's a windows thing. I am sensitive to framerates and I found that Overwatch can sometimes bind itself to the refresh rate. Usually it boils down to it starting in borderless maximised window, and a simple ALT+ENTER can fix it.

I normally use 1080p@120 and I caught Windows changing it to 60Hz on a whim numerous times.

Well here I thought Galaxy Map in settings meant the GALAXY MAP, not the skybox. I've got it set to low! I might actually keep it at low and edit all these settings to my liking (I actually don't want a million nebulas and bright dust, etc).
Nebulas, dust clouds and the Milky Way are all separate settings in the graphics file, so if you just want more stars you can do that. I’m at default High and think it looks alright.
