Some graphics settings questions for new VR guy

@Old Duck - yes you can download the Oculus software while awaiting your Rift S.
It will likely update your firmware when you attatch it.

Link for software: Choose Setup from top line menu, I would have linked direct but, as you may expect, my link is UK biased :)

Oculus Rift S
I downloaded it, but it refuses to run, saying it can't connect to server. What gives with that?

UPDATE - I had to disable my firewall to get this software to install. Please tell me that I don't need a persistent online connection to actually use the Rift. Has Facebook turned this hardware into spyware? WTH?

So how do I get this oculus key from Frontier to use my Rift without SteamVR?

Did you say you had PSVR?

If not can I recommend that you lower your expectations somewhat?
For instance: be prepared for an oppressive(?) feeling, like being forced to wear a scuba mask. Also, imagine your eye sight has suddenly deteriorated. Also sound in Rift S is shocking (go in the Windows sound settings and tick all three enhancements in there as that helps a bit)

BUT then

be prepared to stand up and look around the cockpit and marvel at things like handle bars!

Thanks! What do I do with this key after I get it?

Also, does this Oculus Store need to be running all the time just to use VR? I understand there being a VR app, but why does it have to be an entire virtual store using precious RAM and CPU cycles instead of a simple driver software?
Easy...

The oculus software will load at boot, (drivers mainly), and are reasonably frugal in memory etc. Take a look at useage when just backgrounded and it is minimal. Oculus 'Home' (if enabled) nowadays exits gracefully as soon as an app is opened (it was not quite so gracious earlier this year) so the overall impact on the system is very hard to notice.

The main app (store, Library etc.) only uses resources when open (as in screenie) and again minimal when minimised or an app in use. It is nowhere near the 'hog' steam likes to be, steamVR has improved over time but is still 'wasteful' of resources when running Oculus as 2 overlays are in use.

As you are most likely to spend your time in this screen (rather than the store):

Once you select something to play, it all goes away leaving you with whatever you play :)

Because they're more interested in selling you stuff than they are in your computer's efficiency.

Having said that, it's very easy to set up a window on to your desktop in Oculus Home. This is particularly handy if you're using spansh to traverse the Neutron Highway. Open spansh on your desktop and make sure you can see it in Oculus Home.

Then when your jump starts pick up a controller, switch to Oculus Home, click the copy icon beside your next star in the route on the spansh website, press the button on the controller again to return to the game (you may find the game doesn't have focus - I have Voice Attack set up so that I can press a key to return focus to the game, but I believe there's an AutoHotKey script that will do this if you move your joystick) and your next destination is ready to paste into the Galaxy Map - I actually have a Voice Attack macro which has one of my joystick buttons open the Galaxy Map, move to the text entry box in the second tab, perform Ctrl-V, then move to the selected star. If doesn't go as far as plotting the jump because sometimes I want to jump to an adjacent fuel star.

You can also look at other external sites like eddb. But be warned that a controller makes a lousy substitute for a mouse, though it's not totally unusable.

UH OH!!!!

This is what I get:

I suspect this is because I bought the game on Steam only recently (after Frontier stopped supporting the game outside of Steam).

I think you may be correct, since March(?) this year Steam has been 'keyless' for ED (possibly other games too).
It could be worth trying a Support ticket...

As an aside, my alt is a steam account and plays ok on Rift S - but my PC is a bit more powerful that your/my laptop...

Just 'suck it and see' for now :)

Download the PTC when everything is working, the current 'live' I believe is 'bugged' requiring a persistent connection (although that may have been patched) which raised a little 'salt' :)
The PTC appears to be improved in efficiency also...
