Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

My favorite so far:

What exactly do people mean by the game "coming out"?

It's already playable today. It's still being worked on, yes, so you could say it's not "finished".

But I challenge anyone to actually define the term "finished" in relation to an MMO. With MMOs, when development of new content stops, the game is dead. World of Warcraft isn't "finished", but you don't see people demanding Blizzard cease development.

That is Chris Roberts speak. He was asked about 1.0 aka proper release and he responded with "We're at 3.1 now" like it was a reasonable thing to say.

I like this one
I'll take the 16 odd fully explorable planetoids we have today over the 100 "systems" which are just a picture of a planet and a shopping menu that were originally pitched.

If it was really that bad why did people fall over themselves to fund it?

mmm..I'd that that "challenge" of suggesting why it isn't "finished". if Star Citizen were "finished" it would be reviewable by the gaming press and meet various standards including ESRB ratings, appropriate technical support and multi-language/region support. Since they haven't nailed down any final hardware/perhipheral requirements, there's no phone numbers or emails for when it crashes to desktop and they can fill it full of drugs and bad language without having to provide any warnings to parents or meet any professional standards.

If they tried to fob off a product that frequently crashed, had NPC characters standing around t-posing and frame-rates that frequently drop below ten etc as an actual finished game, the consumer press would be duty bound to crucify them.

I guess, maybe it is finished and CIG just doesn't worry about standards, consumer reviews or professional bodies. Just take the cash now and provide sub-standard. :)

*not aimed at you BTW I'm, kind of, rhetorically answering to the person you quoted that isn't here ;-)

I was hoping for examples of what you would like to see to make things like mining, trading or combat deeper.
Mining: currently is doing just one operation, with one equipment, selling at the same rate everywhere (no dynamic economy yet). Dynamic economy and getting more mining mechanics in would make it maybe one of the first game loops that are almost complete. Said almost since inventory, cargo are still not done.

Trading: no dynamic economy, static inventories, no production chain, no proper cargo management, shop timers, broken terminals. Also having a view of prices and more importantly who buys what would be nice to start with. Oh and not getting interdicted 3 times every jump, that's ludicrous, seriously.

Combat: flight model is still primitive (see previous page, "asset dragging" model / ships are turrets..). Point, click, boom. No skill required, no tactics. Missiles are buggered and if they are not it's the counter measures. Most weapons produce weak effects and move too slow (yeah even lasers...) compared to the twitchiness of most of the ships, coupled with no lag compensation and terrible networking code make it quite a chore. There's a lot of work to do before that becomes complete, also having repair stations that repair your ship (currently buggered too..) would be nice.

Want to know anything else ? I'll be back in 3.8 tomorrow to test it a bit more.

Combat: take a look at Kerbal Space Program, Rogue System, Orbiter, Children of a Dead Earth, or read the Expanse books and get some actual space combat going rather than point blank arcade dogfights. :p

(same goes for general flight/navigation in fact)

The trick to dealing with people who try to compare SC with ED is to say ED is really rubbish. I mean really really rubbish. Horace going skiing is better than ED.

Then it makes them look like they are claiming SC is better than Horace Goes Skiing. Which is rather funny.

Also, in completely unrelated news, quite enjoying The Witcher TV series. Was worried Henry Cavil would suck in the role, but pleasantly surprised.

Have to say, its better than Coupling season 4.

A lot of statistics in that post and it would seem that CIG has actually been CI for the last 12 months .. That was probably mentioned on here , but I seem to have missed it.

And .... Surely the name change confirms what everyone knows ..... There is no Game ;)
You're only just finding this out now? I've been reading about how there's no game for the last 5 years... it's also usually been repeated like a tickertape on this thread every 23 seconds for the same amount of time ;)

That is Chris Roberts speak.
"I know laws of physics very much, I have studied it better than anybody, I know it is very expensive. They are made in China and Germany mostly, very few made here, almost none, but they are manufactured, tremendous – if you are into this – tremendous fumes and gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a 'verse, right?"

Make Space Sim Great Again!

I actually don't land like that Reddit post, but then again I'm not using a mouse and keyboard and use the throttle control so landing is very smooth.
