ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Had a very long session last night, did some talking with another commander at a station then did a delivery mission and finally got stuck dog fighting in a asteroid field, was so fun. Really felt like I was there. :)
Perfect 75fps lock constantly, even in stations now, all graphics maxed. :)

Just a bit sad with the resolution. I know it won't feel as nice any more to dog fight with oculus rift when I get back my viper. Since it only has a small window forward. :<

I really wish I could find that info on how to enable the screen output of the oculus rift again so I could stream this but I can't find that thread anymore. :<
Anyone know what setting you needed to do to enable that debug output window to your normal screen?

Here you go ! ;)

Played a fair amount of time yesterday with two rift-powered commanders, good times ! Full time presence is almost here, this is going to be awesome when CV1 will be available !

EDIT : also, here's a screencap ! No more distortion, and minimum impact on framerate ! :D

I hope it's not necessary as my rift is hooked up to a large LED TV that runs at 60hz. I think it does support 75hz via the ATI Control Panel but only at some ridiculous low resolution.

Let us know if that does make a difference if you do end up testing it out.

Thanks.

Any sane way to get the FPS whilst in the Rift? Haven't been able to figure that one out :)

What CPU and GPU(s) are you using to Max Settings at 75 fps with a DK2? Wondering what I need to upgrade my 4770 and 780Ti to?!!

I think your point of view for the system map is inside the star. and what you're seeing is the star highlights.

I haven't figured out how to move in the system map - my joystick appears to move a cursor sideways over the various planets, and the info menu changes as I select them, but I can't zoom back to actually look at the whole map.

Anyone had any success with that?

You're absolutely right. I went to another system and looked at the system map and this time, I was just in front of the star- JUST. My entire fov was just a giant star. It looked amazing! Completely unusable, but a fantastic experience.

And yeah, I've not been able to move at all in the system map.

EDIT: And just an update on my situation (last post I said I had terrible FPS). Anyway, played for 3 hours last night, didn't change a single setting. I don't think I saw a stutter more than once or twice. This is with everything maxed out (apart from shadows which are on medium), on a GTX770. Very happy :)

The only issue I had was taking a mission where it was really unclear what to do, and Azeban Station jumping sideways on me and blowing my ship to pieces.

BTW - where do I find the nice ice ring'd planets? I'd check a system map if it wasn't completely b0rked for me!

Yeah Asteroid belts are really intensive, (forgot about those) you have so many draw calls to the GPU, that is something that will need to be optimized by the Dev team. It all depends on the complexity of the shaders, lighting and transparency of the FX's. but all that will come with time.
In development, First, it's about making things look good. Second, it's trying to make them look just as good with less demand on the hardware.

yeah, I hope they can be tweaked on low detail

dont get me wrong, on Full, I want all the beans, even if that takes a top end GPU and would hate for the top level to cut any of the shiny shiny, however hopefully by the time it launches on low it will run on as many machines as possible.... even more so because the game runs so well everywhere outside the asteroid belt on my mid range GTX670OC.

When I 1st played beta 2 I began to question whether I needed to get a GTX 980, or whether I could wait.

(thankfully ;) ) after seeing the ice belt, the new GPU is back on my list for Santa's Sack

So this was my view when I started up today
6staEEV.jpg

Somehow I managed to end up between the Starport's interior and exterior walls.

Fortunately I was able to just fly out without issue.

... but the Vonarburg Cooperative seems to have a few issues as well:

I've been stuck in graphics driver hell for the past two days - mainly due to a botched 14.9 Catalyst install. Finally managed to get it uninstalled, and then went back a few revisions (to 13.12 in fact). Launched E: D, got frame rates (for my 2x7870s on low detail) around the 20fps mark. :S

Unplayable in the Rift. :(

I was just at the point of reluctantly & angrily pushing the button on a GTX 980 (sick of Crossfire issues and AMD generally) when I decided to Google what I should be getting (2 x 7870s is approximately equivalent to an AMD R290) and identified that the driver was (again) at fault.

Uninstalled 13.12, updated to 14.4 and now everything is buttery smooth on max settings at 75fps. Crossfire appears not to be working, but who cares.

:D

After some tweaking, the performance (outside of stations) is really god now... the colors however... it looks like there is a problem with lighting, or something. Space is pitch black, shadows are far to hard and station interiors are too bright... and that's on low gamma settings. On high gamma, everything just looks washed out.In short, while the game runs better then it did in beta1, it doesn't look anything like the single display version.

I think that might be similar to the issue I've had on occasion.
When you start the game up does the intro screen look OK or does it look larger than normal and odd with a kind of greenish tint or like the gamma is too high?

I'm not sure what causes it but I've managed to get rid of it by faffing about restarting the game, restarting the OVR service, turning the rift to direct and back to extended, checking display resolution settings in Windows, starting the game with the config manager open and then closing it down once the game started, running the game on my monitor and the DK2 off and then closing the game, turning the DK2 back on and playing the game. I'm not sure which of the above actually resolved the issue but one of them did. What's annoying though is that the issue reappears for no good reason, not while playing but after a random number of restarts.
The only thing I can think that might be causing it is that I'm running the game supersampled at 1440p rather than 1080p.

Hehe you can upgrade it to an Radeon R9 290X :p or you can adjust oculus quality a bit and turn off the blur thingie.

@Valdren: cheers, gonna try to do some streaming later. :)

Gtx 680, no judder even in stations with shadows low, aa turned off and ao off. Game looks bloody lovely as well! Text could do with being a font size or two bigger but that's it for ui issues.

Only major gripe is the borked system map, makes it impossible to use or know anything about the system!! Are there any workarounds for this? Will this be fixed soon or will it be like this for rest of beta 2¿?

I wish you had asked 14.4 a dream 14.9 according to the net seems to be broken, but with the older drivers you could upsample.
Who needs crossfire .......enjoy

Have you tried lowering the Model View Distance slider? It's up at the max by default I believe... if you lower it, it should have less to draw in an asteroid field?

help with settings

Hi, I've just installed my new gtx 980 and am having some judder problems. Can someone with a 980 please share their nvidia control panel and in game graphics settings?

I'm getting judder when in or around stations and am having a hard time trying to get rid of it. I've tried it on low preset and still the judder is there.

I've got the 4.2 runtime installed, rift is on 2.12 firmware

I don't think so, since I don't. ;)

Getting rid of the "washed out" look is possible by opening the galaxy map and closing it again, but the bright interiors and too dark space/rest seams to be either a lighting bug or something else... dunno yet.

I tried pretty much the same you did, but it didn't get rid of it.

I had to repeat the steps I tried multiple times but eventually I got it working.
If I get home and have the same issue tonight I'll try a more methodical approach to try and work out exactly what it is that fixes it.

I'll do so too, most likely... problem is, the only thing I have to go by on how it "should" look is single display mode, and I'm not quite sure it will ever look like that on the rift, although it did in the previous alpha/beta phases.

I'm getting judder while in the docking tutorial, I disabled blur, AA and set a bunch of other stuff to medium which seemed to cure it.

Just wondering what settings people have noticed causing the biggest framerate drop?

Also, with AA, what seems to be the best FPS/quality setting?

Also, has anyone tried Supersampling?
