VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Remember that Odyssey is DLC, which means it's optional. FDev is still going to have to support VR for everyone who decided not to pay $40 or whatever for the DLC. What's most likely is that the FPS parts don't support VR.

some basic a to b to c here:

And yet somehow you managed to put tab Q into slot Z.

It's genuinely fascinating watching you convince yourself that VR support for SC is basically a foregone conclusion. Please do carry on. It's very entertaining :D

I'll just add my voice for continued support for VR: there is no technical reason why It can't be supported for the FPS elements, other games already do, and they do it well. I fully expect Frontier to continue support for VR while in ships, but I don't think that is enough. As prices come down, and they are rapidly, so will the numbers of players rise.

What about factions/squadrons? I only play in VR. How do I play Odyssey with my mates? Does it mean I play Horizons in VR and then have to remove my Vive whenever I meet up with them on a landable atmospheric world?

Do you not think that will be really jarring?
Probably not so jarring. My bet is that we're not going to have seamless continuous avatar movement ala Star Citizen; much more likely you'll pick a menu option to "get in/out of cockpit" (which will only be available under specific limited circumstances), and then there will be a fade to black ala switching to SRV or SLF. Plenty of time to take off/on your VR headset and get settled. Putting your VR headset on/off will if anything feel more immersive, reminiscent of taking your actual flight helmet on/off in real life.

I relayed what they put out, not my opinion, but what they've said. Going by that, it's currently hopeful thinking that VR is not going to get dropped from Elite.

If you value what Frontier says/does more then CIG, then no response form Frontier and dropped flag from the steam page is currently more proof VR is getting dropped then statements CIG has made about VR in SC in their own posts.

I, ehm, supprt VR support! This is the only game I play in VR, and only half the year (too hot the rest of the year). But it is the best thing I have ever seen and played in VR. NMS can do it, so c'mon Frontier! Do it! Do it! Do it!

:D S

this game has NOTHING going for it other than it's the only game where you can fly space ships in VR.

Man, you guys need to take a break from the game and stop complaining.
They are not going to yank VR out of the game.
It simply means there won't be support for VR controllers for the 'on foot part'.

Exactly. No reason for them to drop VR, and no excuse for them to do so either. Bingo.

Yeah unfortunately CIG have promised so many things that their claims are somewhat devalued at this point. Not a great base for an theory.

FDev have this tendency to stay quiet instead, which is why we end up prodding around hints like the Steam page. But I don't think many people are taking it as definitive, or an official statement. The Steam page is clearly provisional at this point. (As evidenced by the scant minimum spec info, etc)

Most of the noise here is more a reminder to FDev that VR is still desired ;)

Point a fan at your face, pretend your ship has AC or just drop a heatsink 😁

I hope VR is implemented into the New Era. I really want to fly through that atmo

Given that first person experiences with classic stick control are a recipe for nausea for many users in VR, I don't think it's such a foregone conclusion. Would FDev definitely market such a product?

I really doubt they'd yank VR support from the game itself / the flight. But there's definitely a scenario out there where it's not even officially supported for the Legs DLC etc.

Because much to many many peoples disapointment, VR is a gimmick with the current technology, it works great while in the cockpit, but moving about on the surface in first person would be horrible. VR for first person shooters is very very gimmicky and is just not there with the technology to be viable.

I highly suspect what it will be is, there will be VR support for in cockpit activites, but the second you get up and start moving around on your feet. Its going to be no VR support at this time.

That was a convenient excuse to shift blame, is all that was. They ported the game to PS4 for god's sake.

PS4 supported the shaders they needed. Kinda different.

I don't know if you noticed that Mac is fricking desert as far as AAA gaming goes. There are probably some reasons for that. The issue FDev experienced regarding shader support is doubtless amongst them.

Half-Life: Alyx just practically doubled the VR playerbase single-handed. It's a first person shooter.

And hell, practically every VR game of note in the last few years has been first person and involved locomotion and kinetic gameplay of some sort.

I'd also note my own anecdotal take: First person 'character' gameplay in VR is where it excels, handheld weapons work excellently, traversing terrain can be great (jet-packing around proc gen surfaces in NMS is a blast :)).

Essentially I have no idea how you've arrived at your conclusion. I find your take, niche ;)
