VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

As much as it pains me to say, I would at least like the option to play in VR and when I have to get out my ship for FPS, take my headset off and instantly switch to the screen with a keyboard and mouse. Even 2D in the VR headset with a k+m would be okay for me.
Chances are the entire upgraded engine is VR free, I'm guessing better lighting, new planet tech etc makes it unfeasible to add in.

I have a feeling some people here are worried if the VR crowd complain enough the complete 'Odyssey' expansion will be delayed.
I don't think that's going to delay the expansion, just FDEVs SOP - I'm guessing late summer 2021, (plus most VR heads are asking for confirmation that it's coming, and not be like their PSVR platitudes where they said VR good, not at launch but then never added it).

Is it a FPS too?

No Man's Sky is. Also you can fly ships. Also you can drive vehicles. Hello Games accomplished this with a tiny staff.

VR isn't in Elite because (and I hate to say it) FDev are lazy and/or poorly managed. They have been working on this update for YEARS. A basic feature like "Switch on VR for FPS" is not some gargantuan struggle. It's already built into the engine. If Fdev would open up modding, we'd just put it in ourselves.

Fdev has been doing the bare minimum for Elite for a long time and it certainly shows.

The list goes on. Where are the renovated ice planets? Where are the other types of SRVs? I'm seriously wondering what they do with all their time. I can only guess that they switch their entire staff to every new game they make?

Are you sure, because from where I'm sitting it looks to me to be the behaviour of a company that's adopting a defensive position in the marketplace, based on previous investment and reactive direction taking led by others and not innovating to drive growth in revenue and stature. Worse than that, removal of VR is a retrograde step.

you can barely fly ships
If FD sould implement VR flying like in NMS there would be riots that would turn pale the mess that we are experiencing now about VR support for Odissey

The flight model in NMS leaves a lot to be desired, I agree. That's why I wish Fdev would pull their head out for Odyssey.
But all of this "It's just not possible!" talk is just ignorant. You can make FPS, flight sims, driving sims all in VR and all in the same game. You don't have to compromise the FPS portion or add teleporting movement.
All they have to add is support for VR which is native to the engine they're working on.
Fdev doesn't need excuses. They need a manager telling them to get to work.

My guess is the haven't allocated enough if any resources to it.

You forgot the atmospheric planets, base building, amazing ships, flora, fauna and clouds!
I'm certain you'd love ED looking this good...

After all it has everything!

VR in ED is overrated. You will be better off with Track-IR. Try the VR once if you haven’t, but I am have a more practical experience with Track-IR.

I do like VR. I think NMS is best played with VR, but ED is requires so much reference material and full use of a HOTAS, you really won’t miss VR if you have a Track-IR with ED.

This is core thing that's wrong with your post, and the reason why the rest of it is wrong ;)

Adding VR in this circumstance, to a reasonable standard, is not easy or straight-forward.

NMS, as you pointed out, got it done (post launch). But to do it to a reasonable standard that required the addition of: virtual cockpit interfaces, a complete remodelling / resizing of the spaceships + cockpit, vehicle internal views, an adapted UI system, a new interface system for object interaction, a new base building interface, hand-held weapons, their own variants of relative motion including nausea tests. Etc etc etc etc etc. Certain aspects were never brought to parity (the sniper zoom for example), or taken to a polished level (roomscale was never officially supported). And performance remains a major issue to this day for many players, with the CPU load of the proc gen planets proving a particular issue. (I only solved my personal PCVR issues with it by buying a new CPU...)

It's not a switch. It's a massive design & engineering process which also impacts the game design for the classic game when multiplayer is in the mix.

All of the above are the type of issues FDev would have to deal with if they were to tackle it in earnest. It's not 'laziness' that they haven't. It's a perfectly understandable bit of risk aversion given the frankly rubbish ROI in the VR world. NMS have the luxury of sitting on a pot of gold (they've sold spectacularly well and have a small team). They can make this particular passion play with less risk to the company and the project as a whole.

Flip a switch in your head. And realise that adding VR + FPS to a multiplayer vehicle game set in a proc gen open world is not easy.

And then badger FDev to add it anyway, in a more reasonable fashion ;)

I am not talking about the flight model that, I concur, is bad, I am talking about the VR controls for the ships. It is almost impossible to control the ship with the kind of controls Hello games have implemented.
Thrust me, as I have learned from NMS, to have a VR control system that works well on foot and on Ships, you have to accept a lot of compromises.

Just noticed that myself. Well then... I wasn't keen on legs to begin with, but no VR for the rest of the stuff? Yeah I'm out.

So where does it say no VR for 'the rest of the stuff'?'

It doesn't.

It says not available at launch. Chill out.

Tired of the whining and knee-jerk reactions.

The process of game-development is a marathon.

I have both, and I would definitely miss VR if I just used my head tracking.
Explaining VR to people who haven't experienced it is like trying to describe the color yellow to someone who has never seen it. You have to experience it first.
I've been flying on my Hotas for years. I know where the buttons are. I can also pull up any window on my desktop and place it in the cockpit if I need a reference.
E D was a great VR game. It'll be a shame to see Elite throw that away for nothing.
