VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

I personally cant login to Horizons anymore as I've stated here earlier because what is in Horizons is prolly gonna be there forever and not gonna change at all. It's the leftovers and won't be getting future updates.( I assume). Anything added to Elite here on out to me will only be available in Odyssey.
Why they gonna waste time on Horizons now? Especially when all there 2d games are simple and easy ways to make cash.I wont be buying the new update on any of my accounts. Sad day

Fortunately some other dev with a beloved franchise is bringing VR to their spaceship combat game as key feature, we can buy that instead of Odyssey, that makes it a lot easier to accept that Elite is going from a VR supported spaceship game to a pancake FPS game (at least partially)

Yeah, I pre-ordered that lovely Star Wars game.
Haven't even logged into Elite since the Odyssey announcement fiasco.

I wish they would offer refunds for Arx so I could refund all the Arx I haven't used (stocked up on as I was planning to own each and every ship before Odyssey launches).

No. They don't "have to" include motion controller nonsense. Especially not for release. I certainly have no desire for it.
Being honest with you - my 65" 4k TV "computer screen" gets all nervous and twitchy when I reach for the VR hand controllers.

I agree. Snap-turning is not good experience.
In games with the snap turn, the snapping makes me dizzy which is the precursor to me getting seasick on a boat.

I recommend every VR player here give the Protonwar demo a try.
I'll give that a blast later on - however I have to say, I prefer VR Headlook, and for Odessy VR I want VR Headlook and wasd/gamepad for the FPS sections, that would probably be my preference over hand controls, and would certainly be my "computer screen" preference were it to get a vote in the matter.

JUst in case it's not been mentioned here (I'm not reading back through 86 pages to check) VR will continue working on everything it currently does, it's only the new content it won't work on.

Double +1 - I love the anagram twitter handle and you've brought more information to the VR fraternity than the entirety of the community management team comprising of three community managers on this franchise and their overlord the newly appointed Lead Community Manager.

No disrespect to you, or the person in FDev Support - they are top notch folks - and you've done well, but its fricking ridiculous that we have to get our answers from tech support while our three community managers remain as silent as an Egyptian mummy.

Although - despite the answer from Ace, there is still some ambiguity on how the cutoff would work such as:

  • Like where is it demarcated?
  • And how much trickles down? (A lot of horizons stuff trickled down to base game)
  • Odessy Content includes new engineeringlets presume they are for ships and SRV's not just go faster legs and dirt drive jetpacks, so they would be G6 + G7 mods, or maybe new types of G5 mods. So, starting with a new engineering mod obtained in 2d Odessy, could that be used in VR, presumably in Horizons?
    • In Horizons would that mod revert to Horizons spec G5?
    • Would it stay as G6 + G7 in Horizons?
    • Would a Horizons player see the new planets surface rendering or the old one? (2.1 buffed graphics that was trickled down into 1.6)
    • What happens when a Horizons [VR] player is on an old world, and a Odessy player is beside them, could they see each other?
    • What happens if said Odessy player exits their SRV:
      • Would the Odessy player see them or would they disappear?
      • Would the Odessy Player still see the horizons player when they went on foot?
      • Or would the transition to feet de-instance them from each other?
And this sort of ties into what Viajero was saying:
I think it does answer that question. Given atmospheric planets and the new planetary tech is new Odyssey content the answer is obviously “not at launch”.

The part that is not clear yet is if other parts of the new DLC where there may be no new content, ie flying in space, will allow VR or not, and what are the practicalities when you transition from such an area to an area with new Odyssey content.

I could go on and on and on - @Tanais - If you are willing to keep this twitter dialogue open I'm sure you could become a VR player groups Hero getting some answers to questions like those above, and many others that must be buzzing around the backs of the minds of VR players?

I was going to buy a new headset this year, but seeing that Odyssey isn't going to have VR support there is now no reason to get one because the Vive Pro works good enough for Horizons.
I know that feeling! My planned 3080Ti/3090 (potential alternative name for it) and HP Reverb G2 purchases look like they are getting scrubbed :-/ Bit of a mixed blessing as, assuming COVID doesn't kill my businesses, I have the greenlight from the Duchess Le Chardon to blow that money as the downpayment on an older lotus elise.

F that. I ain't switching nothing in Elite. If I'm "switching" something it's switching games. :D
This! This! 1000 times THIS!

They told us as explicitly as politically possible that this is the case though (switching clients). "Odyssey will not be VR compatible at lauch" "VR will remain compatible with base and horizons".
Pg. 63 of Odessy Announcement
Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.
Pg. 66 of Odessy Announcement
VR will still be compatible with the base game and Horizons!
Pg.199 pf Odessy Announcement
To reiterate (it’s a long thread, things easily get lost!) you will still be able to play the base game and Horizons with VR, that isn’t changing.
We don’t have any more details at the moment on how that split would work yet, however we’ve heard the questions and the feedback. We’ll be sharing more information closer to release.

They can't help it if some people choose to be confused, either through ignorance or obstinance.
Zorvan, see the quotes from Tim Smith just above this, that is everything they have said on Odessy +/- VR - actually so I'm not liable to being accused of ignorantly taking a quote out of context, there is the entireyu of the last message on the topic.

If any of the CM's are still reading I have a genuine question ...

Will people in VR still be able to fly space ships around beneath a blue sky?

In other words, at what point is VR not supported? Is it when you enter glide for an atmospheric world, when you transition to "legs", or when you launch an "Odyssey" version of Elite?
Hi Alec,

We’re still reading everything, rest assured! :)

As you 've not read all of our ramblings, just like having a base "Elite Dangerous" and an "Elite Dangerous Horizons" in the launcher, "Elite Dangerous Oddysey" will be a separate product in the list, because the game is getting graphical upgrades etc, so a new version of their COBRA engine. This will not have a compiled VR runtime in it, because Frontier only contracted out their VR support to a guy called Greg (I kid you not) during development originally. Unfortunately therefore, any of us would be switching between the two if we want to bother with accessing Oddysey content on a flatscreen. Which I personally, do not, hence I'm extremely upset as an original backer of ED that VR has been, apparently, dropped. And that Frontier must have lost all of the VR headsets. I'd donate my Rift, they only have to ask...
He's not kidding you matey - I've found the interview quote and posted it before:
All hail Greg!

I’ve asked in the forums and on twitter if there is a dedicated VR team / person working on ED, never had a response.
Good luck with that! There are threads in dangerous discussions asking what the frack our "community management team's" remit actually is.

I logged in for like three minutes to "do a quick stock take" and make sure nothing had disappeared. The only thing that seemed to have changed is my once pretty (deadly) SLF pilot is now an androgenous geriatric. IF I ever get back in the pilots seat, and discover they've changed her voice, shes getting kicked off at the nearest star port and can go buy her own cutter with the 750m shes skimmed off me. but that is a big IF, bigger than the forums font size options run to.

I am so conflicted on that one...
+ Its Starwars
- Its Electronic ARtS
+ It's got VR
- It won't have Flight Assist Off
+ It's seemingly got sweet graphics
- It's an arcade 5v5 arena
+ It's got a "story" (campaign?) too
- It'll probably need stuff from loot crates to finish the story

A Lotus? I'll send you a can opener in case you have an accident. I used to keep one in the glovebox for just that kind of moment.

I see another cockpit-based game coming out (Project Cars 3) is supporting VR out of the box. Whilst not space-related, it is 2020 and this developer hasn't considered VR should not be available at launch:
project cars had VR support from the first iteration like every driving simulator out there and it is the same as project cars 1 so they didn't have to do anything to mantain VR support in the last version.

Do you know something, there was once a space game that had VR from alpha, through release, through version 2, version 3 was a free extension to version two and then in version 4, its third paid release...

I'm really looking forward to cyberpunk, especially more so since I seen something about VR may be getting added to it. But raytracing has thus far left me cold. I'm sitting with an Aus ROG Strix OC gtx1080ti that I bought when they were launched, and I didn't see raytracing and a mild uplift in performance as warranting the outlay for a rtx2080ti. But that's mainly due to the 1080ti being a bit of a unicorn, over-engineered by Nvidia in fear of all the hype by AMD aboutVega (?) at the time. You've got one as well I see, so you know how good a card it is, and no doubt smirked at getting titan beating performance for 2/3rds titan prices. Since I'm hearing that the 30 series is going to be silly fast and maybe raytracing is now a sufficiently mature technology to warrant it?

Same here, preordered Squadrons and lost the will to launch Elite since 'no VR' was confirmed. The broken mining economy doesn't help either.

Now see, that's the guy I want running Elite Dangerous, that enthusiasm, not worrying if VR would make them more money, just seeing the magic of flying a spaceship in VR; of doing something just because it could be done (and thanks Greg).
Wherefore art thou Sir Braben?
He's gone I think- since then, "he got PAID!".

Yeah. The problem is even that statement can be taken either way - it could mean Odyssey (ie new Odyssey content) won't work in VR or it could mean in Odyssey only the things added that aren't also in Horizons won't support VR.

"everything that currently supports VR will continue to support VR", ie Horizons and base.
or
"everything that currently supports VR will continue to support VR", ie the flying bits.

Do you see what I mean?

I see what you are saying there Thistle, but clarification on that is one of the things we are asking for and the only response we have had is...
