So let me get this straight...

I am, and yeah it would be. Even taking away the technical aspect of dynamically switching display modes seamlessly on-the-fly (on every PC), it takes a few moments after you take off the VR headset to even reorient yourself to the 3D real world.

To then have to focus on a 2D screen to have that "Neil Armstrong moment" would be a step too far I think.
Having big screen in VR should be doable. The hellblade Devs managed it and that was just done on the side as an after thought

That's true - they could flip to 2D inside the VR environment.

So, once you fly your spaceship down to a planet's surface in a full 3D immersive cockpit, you can contextually watch someone else do the "Neil Armstrong moment" on a screen when you get there.

Nah.

I was more thinking of it staying 1st person but zooming out to a flat screen view within VR.

Not ideal but better than nowt

Well, I certainly didn't expect 12 pages. Though I have enjoyed the discussion and there have been a lot of humorous posts, even the deprecating ones... I can take a good ribbing... and maybe deserving so by not having a more well-thought out post :)

However, I think this snap-shot is valid... VR is clearly important to this player base and Elite has arguably been one of VR's best showcase apps. That the community has some concerns about the trajectory of Odyssey and VR's omission is extremely valid.

I think my post was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to having sat back for a year waiting for THE BIG UPDATE that would propel us in to the bold new era of Elite Dangerous. I think what we're getting isn't really what we expected or asked for. There are reasons for it, I'm sure. And I'm also hoping that Frontier has a lot more they haven't showed us... and who knows? Maybe if there are some new deep gameplay loops around trade and social dynamics in hubs, maybe that will offset some of the obvious expectations that the community has had up to this point. I'm hoping for a vastly expanded amount of game-play pertaining to exploration on a personal level. Perhaps Odyssey brings that in spades?

I also think at least for me... I'm sitting in a frustrating place. A space-sim enthusiast with a collection of games to bounce back and forth between... all of which do some things well... but none of which does it all. Star Citizen is sci-fi sexiness physicalized down to a bolt in the floor... if you can get it to run. X4 has a lot of the mechanics Elite does plus base-building... but no planetary landings and is single player. NMS checks allmost all the boxes on paper ... but it's way too casual and superficial for me. And Elite... does so many things right... but a few big things not at all. I think all of this is why I've placed perhaps some unreasonable pressure on Odyssey to deliver the pinnacle experience. I suppose that may be unrealistic.

1) because other "not at launch" features did not pan out well
2) because the official stance from FD is that they are uncertain where the split will be but for now the official line is no VR in ED:O at all.

@virgle I am sorry you don't get on with ED (or NMS) in VR however that is not the case for many of us. I like NMS in VR as well and would love ED:O to offer the same VR support in VR (and still support hotas etc of course).

Also reading your later posts it seems you ignored the basic introduction to vr esp if you threw your friends into it right away and let them carry on till they were so sick they vomited.
It's a bit like scuba diving. You don't just dive in on your 1st go and sink right down until you burst your ear drums... And if you do that is not the fault of the equipment but the person using it.

But choices are good right?
For the person vomting, I wasn't involved, and it was on ps vr.
The worst games for me are those where you have to walk, the worst is when you have to move vertically, Minecraft is terrible for that, skyrim also cause of all the stairs and relief...
Elite on the other side is really ok I can play it without feeling too sick, except for the srv...

Skyrim vr, using controller and riding the horse is pretty rough for sure. Another one thats pretty rough is VR Worlds Mining Odyssey. Its fun but when your jumping between asteroids and swapping horizontal orientation over and over....🤢

There is an SRV mode added for VR to steady the horizon. Give that a go it really helps.

PSVR is a whole different beast. Considering how weak the vanilla PS4 is i was frankly stunned how good it was. That shark cage demo and the robbery and car chase was something else.

But the tracking is janky as .... And even with my pretty solid VR legs I felt a little rough after using it. Hopefully PSVR2 will raise the game.

That steady horizon mode is already in game menu?

Only thing I've seen about psvr for ps5 was they were making the same level of tech wireless

60hz might have had something to do with that, too.

Perhaps... However it all felt really smooth to me. What I noticed was small corrections in the tracking which made my stomach churn a bit like when in a lift when it speeds up and slows down quickly.
Overall tho i was surprised and impressed by the quality of PSVR . I just wish sony had not recycled left over PS3 hardware to do the tracking

Which reminds me...
CAN WE PLEASE GET A HUD COLOR SHADER IN THE GAME?!
Heh, did you notice the UI in the Odyssey demo, still orange; but Fdev might have done that as a joke - a week before launch they'll go, 'btw, you can totally change HUD colours'...

Yea, it's a <expletive deleted>. I really wish ED had been made as a single player game with modding tools. It would rule the space simming community by now.

I tried the steady horizon option for the srv, it was a bit better thank you.
I often read people here saying that once you tried you can't go back, I feel exactly the same way for the Hotas...
I wonder how it will work with moving on foot, we'll probably need to have a pad not far or m&kb....
So I use hotas for flying my ship. For the SRV I use my Xbox pad (also for the FSS when exploring). IMO that is one of the strengths of the game how you can use multiple controllers at same time

Interesting though. Idk how it is on Xbox but on ps4, once I log in using a Hoyas I have to fully log out and back in with a controller to use a controller. Perhaps that's something they have addressed, but really I doubt it. It seems like one of those things they would be completely unaware of with no intention to fix

Although I think going by the pre-September 2019 cockpit (no thruster chevrons) we can't assume anything at the moment about what the final hud will look like, the dev diary just looks like a development version running with the cockpit from an earlier branch.

Maybe we'll go back to a bright blue ARX button :sneaky:
