Will ED: Odyssey bring Winging Up, Multicrew and Squadrons back into focus?

Afternoon,

Just wondering if people think Odyssey will put Winging Up, Multicrew and Squadrons back in to the spotlight.

A) Will Odyssey make you want to Wing Up, Multicrew or join a Squadron?
Like most MMOs I'm thinking opportunities for squadron (or guild) recruitment in the bar / lounge. I'm also hoping teaming up at any point during a mission or your travels will be quick and painless.

B) Do you think it will work smoothly, or will it be a convoluted mess due to existing mechanics?
The litmus test will be trying to enter a friends ship as a multi-crew role from the foot of their spacecraft. I really hope I wouldn't have to be in my own ship, while he is in his, and then do the current multicrew cuffuffle, and the slap in the face would be maintaining that wretched, lazy holo-me lore haha.

Thoughts - go!

I strongly suspect current multicrew implementation will remain and you won't be able to just walk into a friend's ship.

I don't have anything to back this up, but I get the distinct feeling that implementing the freeform nature of that, creating an excess of entry and exit points between existing and new features, would be a lot more challenging, and involve a lot more reconfiguring of the underlying code, than just adding a new layer of environments in which all the new activities take place.

Multicrew barely holds together as it is.

There's also a whole other layer of gameplay logistics that would need to be worked out with that as well.

I could well see them just deciding "we already have the functionality by another route, it's not worth the development time feathering it into space legs at this point".

Maybe I'm wrong. But I could see this coming in a later update including walking around ships, rather than at Odyssey launch.

I certainly hope there is wing while on legs. so you can see you wing mates on a scanner during battle.
the squadron functions do need more features, like performance on squadron members, last logged in... number of kills even REF and INF generated for the linked faction, if the squadron linked to a faction.

even introduce squadron missions, allowing certain levels of the squadron to create and issue a mission. for members to see what they should be working on

CMDR Yates, this is also my concern.

Can you imagine what a pain in the butt it would be to have this wandering around on foot experience only to hit an invisible wall when you come to join your friend in one ship.

The capacity for multi-crew is there, it just needs to be implemented so you can (with permission) enter a friend's ship whilst positioned immediately outside of it.

That depends on how well it is implemented. If there is no improvment over the current system, the answer is probably "no".
However, I'd be very interested in more cooperative gameplay with Odyssey, especially since FDev hinted at combined arms warfare with SRV, Space Ships and "infantry". I see some potentially very awesome opportunities there. Fighting your way into a Thargoid installation with a group of friends, requesting close air support from a mate in a Chieftain, who will come in guns blazing. Then entering into the base properly, fighting Thargoids in FPS and eventually achieving the objective. That would be awesome.
As for squadrons: I've been comtemplating joining an active squadron for some time now, so Odyssey really has no impact in that regard. If squadrons in Odyssey were to offer an easier way to join/coordinate cooperative gameplay, that would be bonus points.

If I recall correctly, FDev said they are also working on the code of Elite, so I assume there will be some improvements in that field as well. At least I hope so.

...I always saw the two people on foot as a "wing" of players, rather than a NPC wingman companion

(I'm not complaining if your NPC does join you outside your ship though - that would be great!)

👆 This.
So far the Dev Diaries shows us that commander have a friend and they travel together. I bet this is our NPC crew. I love the idea and I want to see my SLF pilot with me in cockpit and also by my side outside the ship.

I second this. It's time to give some love to NPC crew. Also, make a reason to actually hire more then one NPC crew member... we have 3 slots, but who actually uses up all 3?

I'd certainly hope that FDev uses this great opportunity over here to revamp and fix MC alongside the oddysey update, to an extend that would make it compatible with space legs. I am not holding my breath on it, but we are long overdue for this, and for a fix for multicrew and wings being mutually exclusive systems.

NPC crews could get some love as well.

Look at my "NPC.jpg" :) I guess now it's clear why I want to see her by my side ;) She's looking so good.
