In my opinion, the artifact is not related to Raxxla. The artifact is rather part of one unused quest for the community. Perhaps it needs time because this is an important detail for some transition of the ED world to another state. At the moment, it is clear that sooner or later the rules of the game will change, and we will face a new stage in the plot of the universe. But when and why? I think that the whole story with the Targoids brings us to this, as well as this artifact, which is like a gun on the wall - in the end it will shoot.

It's not unlikely that the Mars artefact was a reference to Total Recall, back in 1993. The film was fairly new at that time.
It is also very likely that the artefact helped kick-start human terraforming, considering these timestamps from the FE2 timeline.
  • 2170s - First attempt to terra-form Mars started.
  • 2200s - Earth environmental recovery program started, terraforming of Mars abandoned.
  • 2270s - Second attempt to terra-form Mars started.
  • 2280s - Discovery of first non-human relic in space. Origin still unknown in 3200.
  • 2290s - First man "outside" on Mars (ie breathing unaided) on completion of terraforming.

The artefact has however gotten a deeper role in ED. Braben mentioned in an old interview, that it was an important mystery.

It's also easy to get carried away, when searching for connections. Quator, for example is an old proc. gen. name from the original Elite. It's far older than Total Recall.
Don‘t forget that MB wrote a novel all about humans finding something on Mars (don’t bother reading it, it’s not very well written), and it’s not out of the realm of possibility they were just trying to generate a little hype for its sale.

It's from an old video interview(pre release?). I don't remember exactly which one.
If Drew is still lurking, he may remember. I think the artefact was mentioned in authors guide, as well.

Edit: There is no mention of Raxxla, in connection with the artefact.

And some alien had to bring the Artefact to Sol to lose it on Mars, so...
I suspect it’s the remote control to recall their ship “Raxxla” 😁

I have:

2250s - Martian Fossils found on Mars (of what? No info given)

Brackets are my notes, unfortunately I didnt list the source. Has one of us got the now-retconned FE2 timeline or are there 2 dates kicking around? Whats the source for the 2100s. got a link?

Both plural I note, so more than one fossil.

RE DB saying it was important, in that timeframe its before we knew about Thargs or Guardians officially so may have been intended for one of them originally but doesnt fit the Guardian sites pattern does it, wrong Star type?

The Gazetteer was a book that came with FE2. It has the original timeline, which has more or less been reused in ED.

The logo is just the station viewed from the front? That would tell us nothing, I prefer to think it's a map.

Unless of course the station is the Dark Wheel station and the start place for a map of how to find Raxxla.... or it might be the end of the "map" and you may be looking for a station that is Raxxla... who knows... (well apart from DB and MB) ;-)

“All things are possible until they are proven impossible.”

I wouldnt trust the FE2 timeline, its been retconned too much to fit into the new narrative and new players to the game would have no access to it. Mind you, until we find the source of the 2250s date I have I wouldnt trust that either even though it fits in 'better' with ED history of human expansion and a few decades later they found the Relic as well, and less than 50 years later we have the first mention of Raxxla.

So ED timeline is Martian Fossils, Martian Relic and Raxxla all found or first mentioned within a 50 year timeline....Raxxla is mentioned in Tau Ceti but nothing says that was the source of the myth, it could lead back to Mars.

In both cases its described as Martian not Alien so implication is Mars had its own evolution which lived and died with the planet.....or its the start point of the Guardians and not an Outpost. Nothing says it wasnt Martian in origin, but what happened to them is unknown....maybe they moved to Earth when Mars started dying?

The Martian Fossils are mentioned in the Galnet article about the Federation as well. FFE had a few "alien artifacts" I dont think all of them made it into ED. There was also the "Duval Artifact" - I think it was a statue made by the sentient race that was living on one of the Achenar planets. Also there was a burial capsule with two where they determined that one of the aliens went into it alive ? Ya dont have it in front of me at the moment... I think there is alot of references to older sci -fi stories in these and ED... something about bubble ships and "Oh non pas encore"...

Edit - I seem to remember a youtube that ED put out last year where they flew around sol and talked about things like the martian artefact as well as the fossils...

edit edit: I was just thinking about "Quaids Vision"... I think Phillip Ds(filthy morality police) version is Quails Vision... and it involved the earth being invaded by highly advanced rodents... Wonder where Douglas Adams got his idea from.... filthy mice

Has anyone done much searching in the Aquilas Halo? That's where I'm going next.
Made a trip out that way last year... but was still flying my antiquated Asp (only had 45 or so ly jumprange)... need better jump ranges out that way - especially if you want to visit the Void as well. - good trip though lots of sights and dont forget to pick up a tee shirt before you leave ;)
