Odyssey Progress

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
The lies your company has told so far, for example that you optimized the graphics, when you clearly didn't make your apology pretty weak... This was billed as complete and ready yet it's clear it's barely Beta let alone GA... You all should be ashamed of your performance and whomever caused this fiasco should lose their jobs.

That works out to $0.02 per hour. I'd love to know what other form of entertainment you can get for that kind of value.

The cost/hour of entertainment for past game use is completely and utterly irrelevant.

What is relevant is that the new product purchased (Odyssey) doesn't work. And if one is to believe the 100's, maybe even 1000's of posts proclaiming that with detailed examples then it should be clear even to a blind person that Odyssey doesn't work. As it stands now the calculation should be cost/hour playable time. And in most cases it appears that playable time is ZERO! Even one with a rudimentary understanding of mathematics can grasp what that means.

So - stop using past time played to justify apologizing for what is a very clear and present FAILURE.

Well... there might be some hope for my old machine then that runs horizons maxed.... maybe eventually at least.... it will probably take me till they've fixed it up to download it all anyhow! Especially with all the patching, I'm in a race I can't finish X'D
sorry man but with that you will still only get around 50FPS outside of fights.....

oh its playable its just unoptimized.
I mean for example 30FPS is playable just not reach appealing to the eyes.
The connection issues tho thats a different story they make it at least in parts hardly playable

How cant you use it is the launcher bugged for you or is your system simply below minimum?
Haven't you ever watched a movie, played a game, been in a conversation, listened to a song that was so bad or so annoying that you just plain had to stop. Happens to me all the time. Maybe that's what Odyssey is to Gene.

And don't even try to say none of that has never happened to you. If you do then you're not your every day type person but an Angel. Congrats if you are. Otherwise...

Jarvis. Sometimes you have to run .. before you can walk - T. Stark

Never thought Frontier had bills to pay. Whatever next!?

FWIW - Frontier is a LTD company, publicly trading, and as such has to file paperwork with Companies House (UK). Their latest treasure trove of information was 9th September 2020, during the pandemic. If I am reading it correctly, in May 2020 they had a NET profit of 15 million pounds. (Page 58 - here).

I don't believe that Covid affected them in the way in which you think.

Still don't understand why people don't realise the human cost of the last 15 months. How do we know that staff, and how many staff have had covid, deaths from covid or family members have had covid or died, how many they staff have been off sick, how many staff now have mental health problems as a result of being locked in their home for over a year, that's just the HR side of it never mind suddenly everyone working from home and the technical, communications challenges that brings in itself, I can go on and on but yeah these issues with odyssey are way more important than that? 🤔🙈People need to get a grip and remember that some people working there might have had the worst year of their life and yet here you are laying into them in a forum. Agreed its not great nor acceptable but surely we have to accept there is so many variables that have led to this that have been outwith there control.
The simple answer to your statement is that they should have delayed release until it was ready it's as simple as that. As it is they have done more damage to their reputation than a 1 year delay would have done, at least they had a good reason but as usual pressure to release and earn money matters much more than customer satisfaction.

That might be, but he said he cant use it. Made it sound like its not available for Gene.
Also dont get me wrong here but EDO isnt really bad. It is partially buggy, althought WAY better than Alpha (at least for me), and unoptimized as hell combined with an utterly outdated API (SRSLY WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU USE DX11 FOR NEXT GEN RENDER AND NOT PORT TO VULKAN?!).
The gameplay is actually fun if you can get past the initial instability. Today for example not a single crash for me at least, it def is getting better. And to be honest most ppl I played with agreed on that, its just that the performance literally makes it WAY less enjoyable especially combat zones.

Sounds like this community needs to go the way of cyberpunk, and sue the pants off you. We're sick and tired of paying for games that are supposed to be a finished product to get trash, and this DLC is trash pure and simple. Once again you disappoint. If this isn't spot on before Odyssey releases on xbox everyone here should file suite against FDev. Y'all FDev'd it again.

As much as I like odyssey and think it's fun this might actually be the only way right here. Management has to learn or suffer.

I think your post is kind of hitting it on the head "it's good if you can get past X"

I think people are sick and tired of having to tunnel through frustration to get to the enjoyment part with this game. And it's not even in-game frustration like fighting off a tough NPC to win the mission kind of thing. It's the having to deal with the frustration of technical issues, design problems and unoptimization that sucks them out of the experience and becomes less playing the game and more wrestling with a piece of software. People wanted to pop the game in and just start having fun.

I get that there are launch bugs, and other issues that never really reveal themselves until it gets released to the wider world. But that's just it, the most egregious of issues here, were problems and issues that were known and SHOULD have been addressed before a release.
