Odyssey Progress

I was able to play over the weekend but it was not very productive, i spent most of my time in coloured Cobras. Everything about this update seems to be there to make your life harder. The changes to the Galaxy map, the changes to outfitting and the biggest issue the performance of the game. I have other games i can play in the meantime whilst they get there act together and fix this bag of dingoes kidneys. I just hope it is sooner rather than later or they may find they lose a lot of players to SC or NMS

Sorry mate a global pandemic where people have continually died and everyone's personal life been affected in such a negative horrible way is not hypothetical, and here I am getting salt for merely suggesting that soemthing thats affected every single person on the globe has had an impact here. Shows what people really care about I
In case you didn't know, the last year before release is the time to pre-polish the product with various alpha and beta tests. not active development, but tests are the time.
Right OK, but your still here.......
Yeah, because I'm a fan of the elite who really cares about the elite and what it's come to.
Besides, I warned about the odyssey release long before the covid virus became known.
I was here, I'm here now and I will be here in the future.

I've had my own health problems (the kind that can kill a person), and yet I would NEVER use that as an excuse to misrepresent my work or sell someone a faulty or unfinished product. Instead it just meant that my projects got pushed back a year, and people were thankfully very understanding.

In trying to defend Frontier, you're actually making them sound much worse!

Shouldn't rush to judgement really. Learn where things are .. use a bit .. then judge. We all have muscle memory off Horizons so me too, shaky start. I'm starting to get more fluent with it and it's certainly not terrible. Might even be quite good.

It did, they slipped the project by 6 months due to covid and instead of telling everyone that it was still behind and slipping it again they went ahead and released it in a very broken state.

Jarvis. Sometimes you have to run .. before you can walk - T. Stark

Never thought Frontier had bills to pay. Whatever next!?

Thanks for the communication.

To be honest, I'm actually finding Odyssey quite fun right now. Once you get things tidied up, the seeds of greatness are still there.
  • The server problems I pretty much expect from any online game for a few days after launch, so I'm not worried about that.
  • The bugs I can tolerate pending fixes (apart from the really impactful ones - well done for jumping on the PowerPlay one so fast).
  • Despite all the moaning about performance, it's working far more smoothly on my machine than the alpha did.
The things I think really need addressing now are the, frankly dodgy, UI designs. No point in rehashing all the points here, but the item wheel, the Insight Hub, the outfitting screen, the maps (oh god, the maps!), and so on.

Possibly the one big thing, presentation-wise, that you should take away from this is not to hold a late-beta test and pretend it's an alpha, or perhaps not to hold an alpha test so late that you've only got time to fix last-minute beta problems before launch. If you'd held the test earlier, or delayed the launch later, you would have had time for the rethinking you needed once it was clear the changes were going down like a lead balloon.

So you are openly admitting that FDev released a product that was not ready simply to pay bills. You also seem to be good with this. Makes me wonder what other things you are good with just so someone can make a quick buck. Would you be interested in buying the Brooklyn Bridge?

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
Offer refunds.

Sir your offer intrigues me. Perhaps we can make a trade? I have this very nice White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave...

You are I think confusing smth here. Admitting that the product is unfinished to pay bills yes it seems, but unlike the thing u took as comparison they actually OWN the product and will keep developing it and iron out the bugs. These are 2 different stories. Ofc its bad to release this unfinished BUT as far as I can see its feature complete, buggy and laggy as hell, but feature complete. So they actually delivered smth. (Again not really finished but the main features are implemented so no real lie there)

They are a software company. They all work from homeoffice.
Please spare me the covid-19 excuse, I commute to work with public transport day after day since may last year.
My wife is a teacher who has personal contact with possible contagious children day after day!
We're both not vaccinated a second time...
There are worse things than working on software in homeoffice during a pandemic, and I'm sick of this excuse.
If that would've really been a problem, they could've skipped launching in this fiscal year!
Stop this excuse!

(Yes this triggers me...)

Dear Sir, I started playing your Elite on my ZX Spectrum 48k when I was 14 years old. I am now 50 and still playing Elite Dangerous on my gaming PC, amazed at how things changed and the gorgeous improvements that modern hardware is able to provide to a revolutionary concept.
Please, don't let anyone ruin the Elite franchise and heritage, make a new game and let them ruin that one instead, but keep this one safe.

Still don't understand why people don't realise the human cost of the last 15 months. How do we know that staff, and how many staff have had covid, deaths from covid or family members have had covid or died, how many they staff have been off sick, how many staff now have mental health problems as a result of being locked in their home for over a year, that's just the HR side of it never mind suddenly everyone working from home and the technical, communications challenges that brings in itself, I can go on and on but yeah these issues with odyssey are way more important than that? 🤔🙈People need to get a grip and remember that some people working there might have had the worst year of their life and yet here you are laying into them in a forum. Agreed its not great nor acceptable but surely we have to accept there is so many variables that have led to this that have been outwith there control.

If they have issues producing, testing, and validating the systems for a build, then delay it (again) as necessary. Or make an open Beta on a different set of servers (same as the Alpha, just keep it going) to do fixes but leave the main servers as-is to ensure the main userbase isn't impacted. Sure, some people would be grumbling and annoyed, but it would be far less than what this has caused. And it would have not lead to gaming articles about how much people are unhappy, leading to demands for refunds.

They may not have had control over many aspects due to a global pandemic, including lost work productivity, illness, death, all of that and (nearly) everyone accepts that. But they did have control over what and when to make their release, and they miscalculated greatly.

Edit: Typo

GTX980? Unbelievable! Maybe we playing in different games, David?)

Well... there might be some hope for my old machine then that runs horizons maxed.... maybe eventually at least.... it will probably take me till they've fixed it up to download it all anyhow! Especially with all the patching, I'm in a race I can't finish X'D

The Devs have had to push the game out from those on high who didnt want to miss the deadline date of release regardless if it was ready or not, down to huge investment, advertising and media hype. ED was full of bugs when it came out. Horizons was the same. Fleet Carriers was the same. Why would you expect Odyssey not to be?
Good point. Good question. Odds are very few of us expected Odyssey to release without issues.

Point is though, the issue Odyssey is having is not that there are bugs, even a few very nasty ones. The issue is that - IMO - this release is exponentially worse than all the others combined (opinion based on reading the many threads on the issue - I don't have Odyssey yet and it is beginning to look like it will be a rather long while before I do).

I can’t believe you are apologizing. Nobody has gotten any new game or update without its issues in years. You guys keep doing your thing at fdev. There’s always people that you can’t satisfy nor will those people have any understanding outside of what only effects them. 36 years of fdev running and I look forward to the next 36. I suppose I just wish all the developers were so lucky to continue making video games for over 30 years. Either way, I assure you some of us have extremely valid faith in you. O7
I spent money on something I literally can't use.

The least I expect is an apology.
