Odyssey Progress

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
So no apology, not only that even though I am a pc player you have thrown console players under the bus too and with the state of the game why would anyone even want to play it on any platform

Please do not apologize! Your team is building the Universe for us to play in. It took GOD a full 7 days to create the Universe... and we are only in day 5 post release! Just sayin'.. can we all give the dev teams some time, please!! R E L A X everybody!
If it took god full 7 days to create the universe, where the sun and earth was not present, how did they count the days?

Partially with metaphor, figurative language, and poetry, but, for the bulk of the 13.8 billion years, since there was no sun and no earth, the concept of a "day" can be defined any way you like - thus, Day 1 can last 9.8 billion years as you can I would measure them, Day 2 can last 4 billion years, and so on...

I appreciate I'm late to the party, and my reply is just but one on a pretty large (33 page) thread, however I'd just like to offer my support to David and his team at FDEV.

One question to you: What can we do to help?

When I heard about the release of Odyssey (I still stumble on the spelling!) I was eager, despite the fact that personal circumstances didn't allow me to participate in the alpha. Watching the YouTube videos of a few of the big hitters during the alpha (OA, Exigous etc) I knew that ED:O would be a big undertaking and its final roll-out would probably not be without issue.
I still went ahead and purchased the expansion, though, as I had faith that FDEV would deliver, and they would need real-world user experiences to help fine tune this.
We're all here because we are invested in some way in Elite Dangerous. Why not contribute in a way that is beneficial?

FDEV- well done so far, please keep it up.

With 16 million euros earned in 2020, surely David needs your urgent help (y) 🤦‍♂️

something strange is going on...
this morning I was hooked up for a couple of hours without disconnections. plus I've raised the set to high at 1080p and I'm always over 60 in the ship and over 35/45 in the settlements (hydroponic) on a planet with atmosphere.
I think something has already been done on the server side.... at least I also hope because yesterday I was under 30 fps...

I’m on PC with i5 4690k cpu, gpu nvidia gtx 1050 Ti 4Gb and 16 Gb ram and still get poor performance in fps term. Before odissey I was palying with ultra texture(now med), supersampling 1.0(now 0.75), shadow quality high(now med), terrain quality ultra(now med), ambient occlusion ultra(now med). In odissey while flying I’m about 100fps, then on foot I’m about 40fps(in the best case) but often I’m still around 25fps. Please let player with old machines plays decently at high graphic settings. With medium settings no one can appreciate the improvements to the graphics, the only way is high settings. It’s not goot moment to get a new brand graphic card.

We're still, years later, waiting on fixes for Horizons.

Q1. Which is going to take precedene, ED:H or ED:O?
Q2. Is there a plan and timeframe for going forward? Can we see it? Or is it going to be the frontier norm of .. 'whenever' ?

Consumers have paid hard cash for something that is simply was not and is not, fit for purpose.

I wonder what his dev 2021 dev PC is , new 1 nm CPUs , DDR 5 , new SSDs and other hardware that can get 120 FPS . To make a game for old tech and hardware would be insane no matter the challenge . I hope in time people will cheer Mr Braben for his efforts as the pro dev`s cheered Sean Murray when "his" game flowered into something ground breaking and still novel . Boo all the cynics and send all the worst griefers to make their ED experience a painful one , if they actually play the game .

Exactly. Talk is cheap. Actions are what matters. They can apologize all year long but it's utterly meaningless if they don't follow it up with action.

FD haven't learnt a thing, starting from disaster releases in Horizon season, and onwards with major ED game launches. Sure all games have their bugs, and that's understandable, but FD have a consistent poor track record of QA issues.

Actions speak louder than words, and I'm afraid that given FD's track record, I don't hold out much hope for improvement. COVID-19 isn't an excuse either. QA can be conducted remotely, you don't have to be sat in an office.

FD should just come and admit that the PC release was a Beta version ( at best ) , and offer refunds and maybe ARC to compensate to anyone who change their minds about their purchase.

To their credit, at least FD held back the Console releases... If high end PCs are having performance issues, just imagine what Consoles would be like? Ugh.
