Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

Couple UI thoughts:
  • System Map: when entering a system name in the search box allow us to use the enter key (or other input) to focus on the system. Currently this requires a mouse click
  • System Map: View options to have icon labels always visible
  • Outfitting: List or grid view option - grid is new UI, list is classic UI format
    • List view could also have drop downs to show stored modules instead of the older format- Could be something like the below example:
    • 5A Frame Shift Drive
      • Purchase Module
      • Stored Module (local)
      • Stored Module (Transfer)
      • Stored Module (Transfer)

Will there be a different threads for the issues of

a) Planet surfaces being way more flat and uninteresting?
b) Bases looking like graphics settings auto-switch 1-2 notches (and look like FPS games from 2005 - not the good ones too)?
c) EVERYTHING being way darker than it should? (like gamma is wrong or HDR is enforced on non-HDR capable hardware)

The new UI (not just galaxy map, also outfitting and even the mission board) requires many more clicks to the do the same thing as was able to do in the old one. How is this an improvement? Can the devs explain the design thought so we maybe understand what was attempted? Are there shortcuts we are missing?
  • galaxy map there is no way to plot to a system station/body bookmark, selecting such a bookmark only plots to the system unless you move over to the right menu and select the system map and let it load then choose the bookmark again there
  • galaxy map no full list of all bookmarks, breaking voice attack
  • galaxy map button layout and ordering is confusing, have to click when before selecting with hover or move was enough
  • shipyard shows your ships in a column but you can't interact with them in that list, you have to click manage ships and scroll again; why??
  • shipyard cannot see ship loadouts in shipyard (there is a ??? hint so I guess this is a bug, but why not default to show it as you move throw them?)
  • outfitting takes many more clicks
  • outfitting swap should be called move (as that is all you are doing, swapping is moving a module from or to storage if you ask most I think)
  • outfitting default to sell is terrible; if you want to simplify have a popup on each module swap to store or sell
  • outfitting no way to rebuy a mistakenly sold module
  • outfitting doesn't show module sizes in an easy to read format, have to count dots??!?
  • mission board doesn't open the mission board have to click mission board again!
I understand new things are fun but really its a step backward in many respects, sorry. o7

Overall thoughts – Do the work now to make the Galaxy UI/UX work PRIMARILY for controllers. This will catch VR users, console players, and a number of PC players who use controllers (whether for FPS, SRV or Flight) happy.

Specific Issues

Bookmarks
  • Setting a course is the primary reason to use this feature. That needs to be one button-press after selecting the bookmark.
  • Favorites need to go on top. In Horizons, I name the bookmark with a bracket around it so the alphabetical sort places it first.
Search Bar
  • Setting a course is the primary reason to use this feature. That needs to be one button-press after a successful search.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues

Bookmarks
  • Switch from grid layout to scroll-able list in each category, remove the "manage bookmarks" submenu and make it a "right arrow" selection for each of the bookmarks, and place the "plot course" function on top.
  • I see the "toggle favorites" function in the bookmarks screen and in the "manage bookmarks" submenu but I have no idea what it does. Make the "favorites" folder the top submenu on the main bookmarks menu.
Search Bar
  • Another "right arrow" function that leads to "plot course"

Specific Issues
  • GENERAL: Backspace / Right-click mouse doesn't work in some recently introduced screens: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/31635 (people in comments listed which screens miss it, also added information about joystick problems too)
  • GENERAL: Very not nice not to have percentage values for rank progressions - on higher rank grind is dark and full of terrors, and it was convenient to see the progress
  • GALAXY MAP: Galaxy map is better now with ability to plot route by holding space / left mouse button on the star. However, it'd be even better to trigger it not only on the star, but also on the blue dot projecting star location (see screenshot 1)
  • GALAXY MAP: Why "Manage bookmarks" screen exists at all? Should have context actions for bookmarks instead - edit and delete. Right now totally inconvenient, too much extra sweat.
  • OUTFITTING: I've sold engineered FSD by accident. Please fix that screen and make them store by default instead of selling (see screenshot 2)
  • OUTFITTING: when selecting a module from the "Loadout" screen, there is no option to replace it by another compatible module from the storage (see screenshot 3). Would be convenient to have it.
  • EXPLORATION: Not an Odyssey-specific issue, but when a planet is discovery scanned, can you remove the blue overlay already? It'd be good enough to show it only when using discovery scanner, otherwise it's useless and actually bothering (hard too see where you are landing)

The problem with exproration on foot before was fine now every time I have a Planete with biological forms and want to leave the ship hangs on a black screen after logging back in Orange Sidewinger so nothing in this hotfix 3 helped

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.

Overall thoughts: Galaxy map and system map changes in Odyssey are overall good. I like the placement of the search bar. I like being able to find interstellar factors and material traders, etc. These are all good changes. The overall layout is fine because I know I will get used to it over time.

Specific issues:
1. If you plot a route to a local bookmark from another system, you still have to target your destination once you get there.
2. The route plotter currently throws an error if you try to plot a route using FSD synthesis or jet cone boosting options enabled.

suggested fixes:
1. Bookmarked stations and surface bases should work the same as they worked in Horizons. For example, if you plot a route to an engineer base, it should automatically target the engineer base once you enter the engineer's system.

Overall thoughts – Please don't bring the current Galaxy and System map into Horizons without major redesign and fixes. It needs to be reexamined from a UX point of view and not just a "looks" point of view, as it now takes many more actions (mouse or controller click) to do many basic things than in the original maps, in addition to the regression problems mentioned below.

Specific Issues – These three issues created during the Alpha list the many specific issues, and there are likely others if you search your issues database. Many are likely now marked "Expired" along with many other issues raised by players during the Alpha.

https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/27586

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – Restore the original functionality of the two maps and the missing content as outlined in the issues above, or rollback to the original Horizons Galaxy and System maps.

Edit: Oh, and if you could add an option to remove Fleet Carriers from the System Map that would be brilliant.

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief ,,,,,, Its clean and tidy..thats it.

Specific Issues – clear and concise .....The route plotter has no single list for a route you have planned. Why?
Friends at a system are not identified on the map.
If you have to SC away from a gravity well it does not autolock back to your previous route.
Too many submenus to access information quickly.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – Put the old one back with some extra menus at the bottom for new stuff. It worked perfectly well.

I'm really enjoying the new system map, it's a lot cleaner than the old one, a lot of info is also easier to access, like all points of interest, factions, and the system description. The galaxy map is taking time to get used to, but its nice too!

The hold-to-plot-route time should probably be increased slightly, right now its too easy to accidentally plot a route when clicking and dragging around the planet surface map.
Also, the atmosphere circles around every planet are off-center!
Mousing over the square icons on either side of the system map to open their tabs instead of needing a click first, would be more fluid I think.

Galaxy map
Specific Issues - bookmarks should be easier to delete
Suggested Fixes for the Issues – make it so that the add bookmark button becomes a delete bookmark when you select a bookmarked system.

Overall thoughts:
- I like the look and changes made overall.

Specific Issues:
  • Galmap: System search bar- too much clicking when searching for system. If the system name is known, you type it, and then click on the suggestion from the drop down search box.
  • FIX: If the system name is known and entered correctly, have the map focus right to the system when pressing Enter.

  • Galmap: Hovering the cursor over a star no longer shows information. It would be more streamlined and not very invasive to the screen if a small description box were to pop up on the right hand side when hovering the cursor over a star.
  • - FIX: Display the system description when hovering over a star. Perhaps a toggleable feature in the Galaxy Map Settings?

  • System map: Planet Description tab and Planetary Information tabs- too much clicking when exploring planets
  • FIX 1: Combine information from the Planetary tab into the Description tab
  • FIX 2: Swap the Market and Planetary Info tabs (this one may be bias since I rarely use the Market info)

  • System map: hold to target also auto-centers the camera, which can get clunky when trying to mult-task in the system map. IE: reading info about Body 1, then reading about body 2, and then deciding to target body 1 instead but still wanting to read the information about Body 2. Niche I know, but there is already a camera auto-center feature when single clicking a body. It would be best to just limit it to that imo.
  • FIX : Remove the camera auto centering when holding to target, and just limit the auto centering to when we single click on a body.
Edit: i forgot! The bookmarks system! The folders are great, I love being able to sort mine by type. but an option to have a list like in Horizons would be awesome to have available again. Again, it would require far less clicking when going through the bookmarks if time is of the essence. And of course, I know this is a longshot, but I am asking anyway- can we please have more than 128 bookmarks? :)

Overall thoughts – New UI is less efficient and requires more clicks to achieve the same outcome.

Specific Issues

1. In the old UI, if I wanted to fly to my Fleet Carrier I click on the bookmark, fly to the system and my FC is already targeted. In the new UI I have to target my FC again when I arrive in the target system [new UI is less efficient].

2. In the old UI, when I'm exploring I can quickly roll over the bodies in my newly-FSS'd system and select the high-value bodies to DSS. In the new UI I have to select each one individually [new UI is less efficient].

3. Bookmarks. Give me back my list. I do not need or want your arbitrary folders. I number my bookmarks to put them in the order that I like them. Get rid of the folders. I do not like them AT ALL! [HATE the bookmark folders in the new UI].

4. Ship loadout. Put it back to how it was. I hate the new UI. I hate that I lost two engineered modules before I realised I was selling them rather than storing them. I hate it. Put it back!

Suggested Fixes for the Issues

1. Put the old UI back.
2. Put the old UI back.
3. Put the old UI back.
4. PUT THE OLD UI BACK!!

The new map UI lacks information and usability, especially when navigating the UI using a HOTAS.

ISSUE
Tabs in the ship‘s computer can be changed using the corresponding binding which works great. The new „vertical tabs“ (icons on both sides of the map) can only be navigated using the directional bindings and one has to select the icon to open the tab and see more information.

SOLUTION
All vertical icon columns (in maps, at the bartender, in the advanced maintenance screen, etc) should be treated as tabs and the prev/next tab bindings should switch and activate the icons. That way one could switch “tabs” and instantly see the information needed using the same bindings that work in the ship’s computer.

For the Galaxy/system maps I think there just needs to be an always-on information panel, which is updated depending on whatever you're hovering over at a given time. Just reduce the amount of clicking to see something. I think the task is making the old UI more elegant/visual rather than completely replacing it.

(Also I'm getting my mouse icon offset from the in-game mouse icon -- it feels almost like it's offset in 3D space in-front-of/behind where it's meant to be.
