Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

Thanks. Good stuff. (y)
This is the way I now see it:

In conclusion, I thought Codger's comment was very important, and put my involvement with ED into perspective:
"You are a very tiny cog in a very big world." (y)
Quoting aRJay in post #470: " ..... the game is down for an update as the clocks still run even though nobody can be playing the game."

I think, if this is correct, means my statement about "Only One Game Running Out of Frontier" (shown in Post #482) needs updating:

There is only just one "game" of ED being run out through Frontier servers to many sources including Steam, and it is Steam's server that I'm associate with. Pilots can enter and leave this single game, but the game continues unabated for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year after year. This is even when Frontier does an update, the whole game continues to run, irrespective. I can enter and leave when I wish, but the game keeps running regardless of who is present. Hence, you can't pause the game. That is even when Frontier wishing to do an update or whatever. The game keeps going.
What do you think, have I got it right ?

Well, to put it in context to what you said in the post he replied to... :) (refers to post #457)

You said that if you logged off, then since the game was still running then a ship that you were hunting could be destroyed by someone else. And the simple answer is no, it wouldn't be, because as soon as you log off any NPC's that you might have been engaging with would instantly vanish. In fact, you don't even have to log off, just change instances (changing instances would be jumping from one system to another and going from normal space to supercruise and vice versa).
Right ..... good stuff. But *what if you and I were flying together, chasing the same enemy, and let's say it's CMDR Codger, not an NPC.
I drop out , but you keep chasing him and destroy him. He wouldn't be there when I rejoined. 🤔

And *what if CMDR Codger want's to escape, so he drops out to save himself? (Sorry Codger, no offence ..... 🤭)
We'd both lose him, or I think we would ...... 😲

A typical example of this. If a player takes a mission to destroy a pirate lord (called Bob in this example), the game will spawn an NPC called Bob for the player to destroy when they reach the system where they've been told Bob will be. Bob didn't exist before he was spawned for the player to destroy. Now, since Bob is not persistent, should the player attack Bob with gusto, get his shields down and even take his hull to 1% but fail to destroy him, Bob might wake out to save his ship and his life. Thing is, the mission isn't over, because Bob hasn't been destroyed and the mission timer hasn't expired. The player will return to supercruise (changing the instance) to find Bob and have another go at him, so the game will spawn Bob again so the player can try again. Except, Bob will return in a completely healed ship, just seconds later, because he isn't persistent... He is just a new NPC with the same name (on occasions his ship name and even rank might change!).
Ha! Love it! Errrrr ........ problem ......... :ROFLMAO:
So, NPC's only exist when you are there to see them and they do not persist through instance changes. If they come back (because a mission dictates that they must), then it's just a new version of the NPC created, not the same one you saw previously. :)
GREAT POST!!!! I loved it ! Lots of this 🤔 and more of this 🤔. But what about my suggest(s) marked thus *. Look forward to your (and others' replies). (y)

As a relatively new player to ED, and fighting the stiff learning curve of the game, I welcome you back and look forward to your re-contribution!
Thanks Ciaphas. And please if you wish to use this thread for your queries, please go ahead. (y) There are some really great people here that have been ED savers for me. And maybe I can even help ! 😲

Oh ...... come on Wombat ! you can't even remember the name of your ship !

"Oh yes I can !!!"
"It's ................................. it's ............................. it's ..................................... "
"😢😢😢 ..... "

;)

I've made my second "small" change to what you see below. It's in regard to what we more commenly now call "Systems", rather than "solar systems".
I've made a couple of "small" changes to the above, which, although not helping with naming clarification, better reflect current practice. The changes are shown in red below.

(Please see the latest updated post #569)

There is one Universe that includes everything.

The Universe is full of billions, trillions of Galaxies.
Our own Galaxy is called the Milky Way (sometimes just called The Galaxy).

Each Galaxy is made up of billions of solar systems (Some times just called Systems).
Our own solar system is called the Solar System (denoted by the capitalization to distinguish it from other solar systems) and is part of the Milk Way.

Each solar system is made up of a Star or in some cases a number of Stars, together with numerous Planets.
Our own Solar System (sometimes also called Sol) has one Star (which we call the Sun or Sol) together with eight Planets. One of these Planets is what we call the Earth.

In the case of ED, there is just one Galaxy. That Galaxy being the Milky Way which includes our Solar System with the Sun and the Earth.

Again, any errors ......... please advise ASAP. ;)

Can't comment as I only fly solo.
Yes, understand. I only fly SOLO likewise. But it all started discussing if the game could be PAUSED and then everything got broadened to include OPEN gameplay. I'm hoping to hear back from FG following my reply (post #484) to his post #476. My suggestions in post #484 are purely made as a SOLO pilot and might just be a load of rubbish. 🤭

Here's a good example of where they have done just that: https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/System_Map#System

I think the clock never stops ticking, but during an update much if not all of the data processing to run the galaxy takes a pause. I'm certain different servers will run different parts of the game. For example, all the market trading data will almost certainly be running off different servers to the servers that generate and manage missions, and the servers that our computers connect directly to as we fly and fight or whatever will be different again.
For simplicity, it's easier to just imagine the ED galaxy never stops for any reason, even though we can't play in it while updates are being made.

That's virtually what my revised post #478 infers. I think your comment "..... it's easier to just imagine the ED galaxy never stops for any reason .... " is the safest bet to take, and also reflects what aRJay thinks is happening. (See his Post #470)

With regards to fueling.....
where it says Fuel Star, that means that is the last chance you have to refuel by scooping. If you don't scoop there, you won't have enough fuel to make the next jump.

Don't worry though. About 99.9% of all stations, outposts and planetary ports will sell fuel.

Gracunha is not inhabited - no stations or outposts so you cannot buy fuel there. Is it possible to buy a fuel scoop for the Sidewinder where you are now? A 2B or 2C would fit and you can transfer it to the Hauler when you get it. A 2A Frameshift Drive also fits in the Sidewinder if that was available to buy where you are. That would increase your range from one tank of fuel to about 43ly and you would make about 17ly per jump. You can then transfer that 2A Frameshift Drive into the Hauler. One or both of these things will make your trip easier.
