Odyssey added 90 unique species, which have their own models, and variants are just different colours on the same model. It goes like this: Genus -> Species -> Variant. For example, Osseus -> Osseus Discus -> Osseus Discus - Red.
Yup so taking Genus only there are 21 Planatary bios ?
So 1 Osseus , which has 6 species then multiple variants . 1 bacterium , 1 tussock etc .

Performance issues aren't really affecting Horizons to the best of my knowledge. Either way it is purely strawmannng on both our parts as we don't really know why they left.
I'm certain that Frontier knows exactly how many people are playing the game each day.... Why should we be concerned?

Before the silly answers... It only matters if they begin to make concerned noises, which hasn't happened yet... Although, of course, perhaps they do want player numbers to drop below the point the game is sustainable and shut down the servers / service - who knows?

You say it yourself: we should be concerned if they shut down the servers.

However, if there are not enough people buying expansion packs every 5 years and ARX on a semi-regular basis, then why should Frontier invest in the game?

I'm with you, plenty of time to be concerned after they shut the servers. 🙄

Multiple variants (subspecies) depend on the differnt chemistries, of the planets where you find them ..
Pretty sure there are over a hundred variants of the variants (not sure exact number just did a quick reckoning)

(And just to be pedantic .. rather than genus, species and subspecies it's probably more like .. family, genus and species, same deal just a different way of classifying them into groups. I've also seen sedimentary rock .. for geologists .. btw)

As you said, there's so many different interpretations of what actually makes a game "Elite-like"...

This part of your post I wholeheartedly agree with.

The problem is that Odyssey only caters to one interpretation, and therefore it's (IMO) not in the spirit of Elite... where you're supposed to "blaze your own trail... but shoot this, then this, then this, then take that, and there's your personal narrative right there!" :cautious:

Some people obviously like it - and good luck to them. However, like Drew, it's just not a game I think I will ever want to play now. It's a bit like your favourite food being "improved" by the manufacturers so that it's now inedible.

No, I am not doom mongering and it is a tiresome retort when anyone brings up concerns about the game that the immediate response from some is accusing them of that.

I like Elite Dangerous, I could probably get to like Odyssey if they ever implement head-look in VR mode but I do not like the way Frontier have mismanaged it, and will say as much.

Im sorry I just noticed your post about the servers shutting down which isn't realistically going to happen in the medium term and figured doom.

I want the game that Drew wants and I doubt ED can ever be that game.
The thing about us all theorycrafting is that none of us actually have to worry about the cost of making this perfect product we all deserve, or the technical challenges that may arise, or have to try and please diametrically opposed segments of the playerbase to make a viable product that will sell enough to allow for a return on investment, and have some for future development too. All without having to resort to pay to win like the 'other game'TM
Obsidian Ant no longer posts too much content on ED either.
So what? There are other guys and gals to watch on YT that are currently doing a better job. If one associates the health of a game based on how much x youtuber is giving it attention, you may be putting too much stock in the youtuber and not enough into the actual game.

It’s not the end but I can see it from here.
Speak for your own end. :D

I was responding to Ratty's (presumably sarcastic) tinfoil hattery about Frontier pushing players away in order to turn off the servers. I have never once claimed ED is doomed; mismanaged, yes. Lacking direction, yes. Not a priority for Frontier, yes. However, I am confident that as long as Braben is on the board, the servers will remain online.

I did say before the silly answers too...

I wouldn't be over bothered with the servers shutting down in, say, a year (because of Odyssey I don't think it would be excellent business decisions to do otherwise) the game has had a good run, and is obviously, according to some, already dying anyway 🤷‍♂️ (why, one kicstarter declared with great authority that the game would be EOL by around Christmas... Although that may just have been because Odyssey, wasn't, just like Drew, what they thought it should be)

There was nothing probably about it, just think about comments made here:

... "mismanaged" and "lacking in direction" because a game doesn't tick their own boxes among some of my favourites...

ETA: It's a little like th emembers who have to preface their username with PS4, PS5, VR for whatever reason... I also play in VR, it's fine - exactly what we were told to expect..

I suppose the expansion being a dog's dinner, yet never explained away, could be put precisely in David Braben's lap too, as he would have approved the launch.. Just as he could approve any other action regarding the game, surely?

Honestly, I hope Drew really goes for good at this point. Everyone gets one melodramatic drunk farewell post but more than that and it becomes a bit pathetic. Best of luck to him and I hope he finds something else he enjoys enough to write some fanfic about.

And to the folks in this topic who have been complaining for years: why not follow his example and find something you enjoy in life. You can thank me later!
