Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

A lot has changed in 4 years.

Some things haven't changed. Like CIG still selling concept ships for a game that isn't released. Still 50 player servers with no plans for that to change. Still no second system out of 110.

Some things have changed, but it doesn't change the past. I know, i know, Mole might chide me for not letting go of the past, but that is the road to absolving Chris.

Eurogamer want me to turn my Adblock off or sub for £7 so i can't read it.... never mind.

Edit, it was written in January 2018, its completely irrelevant now.

Oh?

It feels petty to slam a game in alpha, in early access, for performance issues. Yet in Star Citizen's mega-profile case it feels so indicative of the story so far: unfulfilled promise(s). 'Trust us,' say Roberts Space Industries, 'we're building something spectacular and it takes time.' But how much more time will it take before what is spectacular actually becomes fun to play? And how much trust is left? When I hear a friend of mine, my Star Citizen tour guide, my expert on hand, who's into the game for hundreds of pounds, talk about reining in Chris Roberts, it makes me wonder.

Star Citizen remains a tantalising prospect, and a controversial one. Perhaps the solutions I am after are right around the corner, mere moments away. Perhaps the core is inches from completion and content will soon be piped in willy-nilly and with joyous abandon, and the dream realised. Or perhaps we will be here a year from now, still stewing over the same issues. I, like many others, was led to believe alpha 3.0 would be the turning point, but what I see is an ever-growing mountain to climb, and my hope wanes.

I dont know man, its conclusion looks very on point to me today as well.

Got a follow up on the server limit thing as I asked for a source.

So basically just a couple of anecdotal accounts.
that has been my experience and of other people i know.

you can get on a server with 50 people, but it has been rare.

Its the old conundrum.

Its hard to believe people are still willing and able to keep pouring money into this buggy alpha. It does make one suspect they are somehow counting store trades/CCUs/melting. As we see from Mole, there can be a lot of that sort of activity around the release of a new ship where people aren't actually putting more money in.

But, if they were counting those, then it probably would mean CIG would already be bankrupt, would have gone bankrupt years ago, even with the Calder investment.

I think many of us here would love to know exactly how that funding tracker works and see exactly where the funding is coming from.
What if the employees counter only gets higher and higher because they never subtract leavers, they count interns and contractors? That would mean their workforce costs aren't as high as we think?

Hmm.. i think that would be a bit more obvious. Money is not visible, its just numbers on an account (or accounts). People are people. If CIG are announcing they have X number of people, some people might internally start asking where all these people are.

However, i'm pretty sure CIG do include contractors, interns, and Doris the tea lady in those numbers.

I mean, if you were referring to projects like Godus, Shroud of the Avatar or other similar crowdfunded projects that led some individuals to extreme levels of sunk cost both financial and emotional based purely on faith in a future product, then we agree, my bad.
Nope...wrong track again and still far from the intent behind what I posted. Stop guessing...perhaps read it minus the attempt to force your dislike of Ci¬G and Star Citizen as the subject matter :)

Strange...now that you mention it, I've rarely had issues joining the org guys if I've turned up late for the party...servers are always 25-40/50. Maybe the little bits of static meshing thing that they have added is spreading the server load a bit, or they've just rented a lot more server space for the free-fly. 🤷‍♂️

It doesn't look like a reduced server cap... since I have been on full servers or they've filled up once I'm in...you can check the server numbers in the comms section of mobiglas in game.

They do post their financials every year.

UK financials are the only ones we can take likely be accurate since they can be audited and there are penalties for misreporting, plus they don't give the full picture.

They do not publish their US financials every year, they have done for 2019 and maybe 2020. You might be able to show me i'm wrong, but i don't think they published before that. On top, its self reporting and while maybe they are audited, it will be by a pet accounting firm, who will not dig into things.

What they do not reveal is the financials for the whole group, including the dozen shell companies they control. At best we only get a small look into CIG's overall financials, and that is largely due to UK law.

Funny you should mention joining org mates.

One theory is that the cap is not a hard cap. You can still get more in, just as long as you are joining friends/org mates. If you are a loner, and a server is already at 30, then you will be redirected to another server.

As i said, that's just the theory (or hypothesis to be more accurate). Still need more data to get a real understanding of whether there is a new soft limit.
