Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Last night, after 10 months of Odyssey, I realised that I have disembarked from a Python for the first time!

I was completely unaware of where I was disembarking from or how to get in the ship until last night!

Yeah I have been told by my fellow players that it effectively just comes down to luck and nothing else.
Which is kind of-..Frustrating, to be honest.

You know that blue colour that appears? How intuitive would it be if those would only colour in the areas where the geological signal sources are found? You know, so that you dont have to cover the entire planet and narrow your search down a bit with high tech sensor equipment.

..I know that is how the mechanic is SUPPOSED to work, but it clearly doesnt in a way that very obviously needs fixing to me. I mean, just look at this.

I am still having oodles of fun with this game, but sometimes, frustration does set in...
What you need to do is get closer, so that you are able to distinguish the different hues of blue, and then work out which hue has the highest likelihood (because that's what the different shades represent).
And yes, the tones of blue instead of a proper heatmap is something silly that happened during the alpha of Odyssey. 🤷‍♂️

Covert heist one epic fail.

Got to the settlement and spent a good while looking around.

I needed to open a containment sample case inside a level one area. Not too much of an issue but you need level 2 access to do so, right? So I started lookng for a level two person to scan - but according to the personel list, there were only one's and three's at the facility (is that an regular thing?)

All level three's were in a SEC area which was only accessible through a walkway with a guard patrolling. Right.

Went into the walkway (zero access level required there), let him scan me and waited till he walked away.

Crouched, shields activated, boiled him up. No alarms. All well and good. However, a few techs turned up and another guard. Bang bang. Still no alarms.

Got to another terminal and tried to see where the alarm off console was. There wasn't one. In fact, the room I was in had a console thing, but it was blank, completely black screen - no telling what it was supposed to do. By this time, I'd scanned a dead tech and had level three so I scooted over to the building with the containment case.

So far so good. Activated the open case control and... all hell broke loose. The tech nearest it started shooting, and two more came down from upstairs. They all died. Of course, that wasn't the end of it, oh no.

The entire guard contingent came running and, at one point, I had five to contend with.

Thinking I was about to meet the ferryman (and I didn't have a penny), I ran like the clappers. There was a skimmer in pursuit too and I'd used my medkit and all power cells.

But...

I made it. I bloody made it. I've never survived that long with so many hostiles.

Phewee.

Excitement is starting to build!
After several days with the expedition (link!) I have begun to find my feet in the art of exploring. Having a carrier full of friendly pilots to support me and answer my questions really helps, I can't thank my fellow pilots enough.

Now, I've managed to log my first biological discovery, and got my first discovered AND mapped system!

I also found out how to take third person screenshots. Go, me?

Given I am in my second week of Elite, I'm pretty happy about this, and the expedition is proving a lot of fun!

Thankfully my fellow pilots seem to agree, as my friends list is growing.

Onwards and outwards!
That's cool. I think I was playing for six months before I made my way to Colonia and hitched a ride back on a fleet carrier. It was more of a convenient taxi ride though. Very little interaction with other player restricted to Discord. A solo mission into the black should be a quite different experience but you can try that any time. Preferably after your drive is fully engineered.

Biological is easy. Blue area, land in it, youl see biological things, scanny scanny
Geological. Blue area, land in it, you'l see-... Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Used filters, but still.
Follow the sensor on your SRV, I think. I do that. Sensor suddenly goes blank and stops detecting stuff.
I dont suppose anyone with experience knows if there is some hidden trick to this, or something I am missing?

So far I've had no trouble finding the Geological features - it's biological I've found more elusive.

I'm not sure there's a hidden trick - I hoon around at low altitude in the areas under the blue scan filter, looking for the smoke/steam plumes that come from certain geological features, then land nearby and so far I've found all types of geological feature on a planet within 2km of the landing point - and visible from one another.

Granted, my highest is only 3/3 Geological features on any given planet.

For Biologicals, my best is 4/4 - but I've left many planets having found only 1/3, 3/6 and most recently 4/7.

I may just have been lucky, so far though!

Keep at it, they will show up, eventually!

Not always true, but sometimes. Blue areas indicate where geological features may be found - but it isn't a guarantee that they definitely will.

My personal tactic is that when coming in from orbit with the blue overlay active, there are always several shades of blue which indicate different types of surface; biomes if you will. I like to land on the border of two shades, because it's likely that geological features only spawn in one of them, and I might get an idea of which side to veer towards as I descend.

But if you can't see an obvious steam vent, geyser, or lava spout, it's not time to get in the SRV; keep flying. If you skim over the surface at 50-100m altitude, you're likely to start seeing features at some point. Make sure you have vertical thrust bound to something sensible (mine is W) so you can comfortably manoeuvre around without bumping the ground or constantly adjusting heading.

Yeah, I look to the borders between shades of blue, to.

Although so far I've found all my geologicals in my favourite landing spots - within the perimeter of ginormous craters! I don't know if this is a thing, but I like to treat craters like my own personal landing pads, and so far it's worked out for me.

Yeah, I also have thrusters (up, down, left, right and forward/reverse) bound on my HOTAS+FCS so that I can make small course/position corrections, and also kill all thrust just by using thrusters whilst having throttle set to zero - I can just release the thrust controls and it decelerates to whatever the throttle is set to. Very handy when skimming the surface looking for smoke/bacteria puddles.

You know that blue colour that appears? How intuitive would it be if those would only colour in the areas where the geological signal sources are found? You know, so that you dont have to cover the entire planet and narrow your search down a bit with high tech sensor equipment.

Yeah, the geological features will be in the blue. Somewhere. Low level rubber-necking from the cockpit of your ship is the quickest way to narrow down the search area. Also the quickest way to clip a rock and flip your ship, knocking out the shields and scrapping 26% of your hull onto the planetary surface (ask me how I know :D).

You don't really need to be at rock-clipping low level, but sometimes I'm so busy looking out the window...

...be sure to cycle through the types of geology and biology as that can refine the locations down.

Wait. What? That's a thing? How does one do that? Asling, uh, for a friend.

In other news - hurrah, todays covid swab came back negative! Another one like that tomorrow and I can... go outside...

If there was no alarm console, then the mission was bugged. For those you must disable the alarms before opening the container, or else...well you've seen what happens :)
Hmm.

There was a console, but the screen was completely black and couldn't be activated. I assumed it was the alarm disablement as I'd already seen the others like settlement defences and scanning.

I seem to have a knack of finding covert missions that are either a) extremely difficult or b) bugged

Took me three years to make the trip to Colonia. I doubt I'll ever go again.

I have been playing for nearly six years still not made it out to Colonia, in fact I haven't been much more than 5,000 light years from my start.
I did go further than that once but it was in the second phase of the Fleet Carriers Beta test so it doesn't count.

...

Wait. What? That's a thing? How does one do that? Asling, uh, for a friend.
Tell your friend that they just need to move the four way thumb hat on the joystick left or right.
That selects the Previous Filter or Next Filter as bound in the Detailed Surface Scanner section of the Ship Controls section of the bindings.

Congrats hope things keep improving, outside can be overrated though.

I seem to remember there being a Colonia and back carrier service once... memory is vague though.

If you are going venture there in a 'Conda, get a good scoop. B class if you can't afford the A and, don't forget, scoops have no mass.

Just for fun, I did another covert theft. This one was the easiest of them all. No guards near or in the building I needed (CMD), access was level two and there was only one tech inside. I'd better try a heist or two to see if the engineer unlocks. The last one I tried went... well, I've spoked of that already :D

Got a 5A scoop so I'm sorted. If I make the trip myself I'll have cartography to sell on, then I can hop on a FC for the return trip. Engineered the FSD too so that's good. I would just need to set aside some time to do my holiday in Colonia
