What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

That looks really cool, though I wouldn't want my kid running around that sandbox with all those rocks sticking out of the ground. 😅 Recipe for head injury right there!
True story, but 9 years ago, back when I visited Argentina, I was at a playground there, and, no joke, at the end of every slide was jagged glass. Woo hoo, cuts for everyone (actually, now that I remember, not 1 kid ever got cut)

I didn't get to check the forums yesterday, because returning to work after more than one week of sick leave was really hittin' hard. But I played a bit and started an entrance which is unfinished yet - but my first custom entrance ever! Today, I started with my main staff area close to the entrance. It contains the vet, quarantine, workshop and all those facilities. So nothing animal-related today, except for some management. Only the first building to the left is fully decorated, but I hope I can finish this area tomorrow. I really enjoy just being in this zoo, it feels like a little vacation!

Ok, after a day of getting dizzy in the hot sun, inspiration has hit me like a man hitting mosquitos, and I got it: Quell's Covert.

"What's that?", you ask?

Lemme explain, in the form of lore:

Hello, hello, hello. My name is Sue Kiper. I am the CEO of the International Association of Zoos and Parks (IAZP). We've noticed your success, Mr. Quell, and we have a daunting request for you, if you accept.

You see, we at the IAZP need a master (if a bit unorthodox) zookeeper to build and run a zoo with rare, endangered species and species hard to acquire in captivity. Your goal is to establish successful breeding programs for many animals so that we can reintroduce them to the wild and reestablish good numbers.
Many have tried, many have failed. That's why we ask you, a true zoo tycoon, to please help us. We have nowhere else to go.
Please message me if you are interested
.

Sincerely,
Sue Kiper

Ok, I need y'alls help, 'cause y'all are the experts: what animals in-game (including the new Wetlands pack) are rare in zoos/captivity?
I'm not talking about conservation status, I'm talking about numbers; I plan to add most, if not all, endangered/critically endangered animals, maybe some vulnerable?

  • Platypus: 1 US zoo, around a dozen Aus zoos
  • Capybara and Otter: Very common
  • Wild Water Buffalo: 1 Nepali zoo (Domesticated species is more common)
  • Caiman: Common
  • Lechwe: Around 10 US zoos, quite common in Europe
  • Crane: Uncommon in the US, common outside of the states. Around a dozen US holders; around 150 in Europe.

Amity has Komodo Dragons now!

It's been ages since I had them in-game and when I had, I started a new zoo and never really played with them. The amount of space these stinkers need is quite shocking - and why on earth are they running the whole time?

I know IRL they would probably climb those fences or some dumb guest would lose their fingers, sticking it through the fence. But I still go with BestInSlots motto: "No realism, just vibes."

Wow, Swjos. Wonderful. Komodos are essential for me, and zoos where I somehow can't fit a croc, I feature them, don't ask me why? I guess I need 1 big reptile to showcase
Thank you! I figured I really have to use more reptiles in my zoo. Frontier is really good with them, honestly. I hope the new terrace tool will help me build water habitats easier, because that's actually where I often struggle. Especially when I don't just want to use the terrain painting but want to build a pool with concrete. Komodos had the plus of not needing water and since they are an island animal, they fit perfectly into Amity. :)

Oh my god, yes! They're reptiles; they don't move much! Smithsonian and Audubon's enclosures can't be larger than, oh, 100-300 meters squared. Yet the game's version are apparently not just hyperactive but also like space to run around. (and PS, love the fence joke)

I made some WIP shots (in the rain bc idk):

This is where the old giraffe building was. I gave the garden a little do-over and added the outlook post in the background:

The new giraffe shelter:

The view from the lookout, including the shelter for the "smaller" animals.

Just a little bridge where the river flows into this habitat's lake, built this ages ago but I like this scene:

I also made an overview shot of what the zoo looks like overall at the moment:

I have spent around 300 hours working on this zoo so far. Stuff near the bottom is mostly finished, but other than that there are a LOT of construction sites.
Generally, bottom left is North America and Europe, getting more arctic the more left you go. Bottom right is South America, the open corner is space for future SA and African animals to be added. (Like Capybaras. :) )
The area from the middle to the top right is all Africa. Over that will be Australia. The huge open space on the left will be Asia (and NA, EU, and Arctic additions).

Alrighty then, decided to make a start on my simpler, easier zoo by getting some of the more complicated stuff out of the way first. I won't bother showing you the entrance building because, quite frankly, it's trash and I'm going to rebuild it, but here we have the meerkats and aardvarks, and the unfinished otter habitat that will be completed as of the 12th (well...13th for me, really). This is loosely modeled after my local zoo, Orana Wildlife Park (though I've subbed the crested porcupines for the aardvarks - here's hoping I can one day sub them back!).

I'm not going to base the whole zoo on Orana, but it will be inspired by it quite a lot. Can't wait for the Wetlands Pack!

Thank you! Some of the Australian pieces are among my favourites in the game, and they go so well with the African theme. With snow and cold weather outside, I really needed to escape to a warm place!

I'm unable to prepare habitats for the new animals in advance, so I actually just do other stuff around the zoos. But I know the feeling of a slump after the announcement, you just want to play with the new ones immediately!

I didn't feel like playing today, I might have overwhelmed myself with building yesterday. So instead I gave the vector map another try and made one for my Niceland City Zoo (which isn't really a city zoo, but well). The outcome is a lot better than last time, and I think I will use it in the actual game on the screens. I love how the game boosts my creativity even besides playing. I'm not super talented with vector graphics, but I'm getting better and I might adapt the map when the zoo is further expanded.

What's the programme you used to make the map- it looks brilliant!
