Good morning all,
Haven't been on Elite for a good while, basically since the announcement that consoles are no longer going to be supported. Was a bit conflicted about it (as basically space legs doesn't do anything for me, I'm actually happy not bothering with that part of the game, so could stay as I am!) but now that FD are offering a one-off port of account from console to PC I'm thinking that maybe I should switch from Xbox to PC, even if I don't plan to stand up and leave my cockpit anyway. Some of my squadron have made the same switch and squadron ops on Xbox have basically died overnight. So I'm thinking I take advantage of the account port offer to move across (they're basically offering everything other than carriers, which obviously i could just decommission then buy again on PC). However, one TINY problem - my knowledge of PC computing could be written on the back of a postage stamp. And I am not even talking about one of those large, limited edition Christmas ones. Sad, I know.
So I was wondering, as I know that you are a friendly bunch, and several of you really know your eggs, whether anyone would mind giving me some spec advice. Basically, I have access to a computer with the following spec (below), question is, would it run Elite? If not, then I'd have to buy a new PC, but as I have this one already I'd rather not get a second (and buying a PC purely for one game seems a bit indulgent when people out there have real problems). Please don't laugh - I have zero idea whether this system is miles off what I need or way over the top or somewhere in between. It's just letters on a page to me. I have looked at the spec requirements posted by FD but can't tell how this relates to it. So I wondered whether anyone in here would mind taking a quick look and tell me whether I need something different, if someone wouldn't mind? I have this PC already, using it for work, hence the question. I could ask in open forum, I know, but not sure whether my fragile male ego could handle the ensuing torrent of abuse and mockery (plus also don't want to reopen the old console/PC issue!).
And @Tyres O'Flaherty I hope that you don't mind this post - I'm hoping it is tangentially relevant to the spirit of your thread as my current answer to 'what are you up to?' is 'grappling with PC vs Xbox questions - please say if it's annoying or presumptuous and I will delete the post.

No, I specifically went in and checked on both versions - Horizons still converts to UPPER CASE - Oddy retains the input case so you can use Title Case.
As I mentioned, F D knew about this, it was a conscious decision on their part to do this in Horizons as it was the only way they could fix another bug that they had introduced in some update yonks ago - I don't think they admitted what bug it was they introduced that had to be remedied but support were very clear in their response that this was why they now convert all input text to UPPER CASE. What made it even more annoying is that the case you use for your ship name on first starting the game is not converted - it is only the text input in livery screen that is affected (ship name and ID).
EDIT - just to be clear, it has nothing to do with release dates, the fact is Horizons and Odyssey are two completely different games.

That will very happily run Elite and should also have no issues running Odyssey either.

I harbour dreams of hooking it up to our main TV, which is 58'' (have a houseful of gamer kids...) and does do 4K etc. I work from home, mostly, so all the kit is colocated. However, the IT department consists of me, a roll of duct tape and an old set of spanners generally used on a couple of old MGs, so that might remain a pipe dream. No idea whether the PC monitor will play ball with 4K. I asked it but it ignored me.

Now that i have this shiny journal, I just meant that my clipper, that i got in Nov is uppercased, while my dropship, that i got on Xmas, retained input case apparently. Playing Odyssey since Odyssey too. But i never checked deeper, just noticed different letters and thought that this should be corrected at some point. It could however be the case that back in Nov i cared to name my ships in caps, and then forgot it by Xmas, so i can not really argue.
Laptop then, wouldn't be pushing it for 4k for the beginning, it'll heat. If not so, can try. Otherwise it's recent machine and looks well balanced, Elite to SSD and it'll be fine. Also if you're not planning to leave your ship, you're not going to have ground CZs and others a-lot-of-objects-being-rendered-ask-too-much-from-my-CPU frame drops, Odyssey in space is not so much slower than Horizons.

To work properly on the IT side of things, and even the MGs from time to time, you should invest in a couple of good sets of metric and imperial precision lump hammers.
If you just want to quote from one post click the reply button to the bottom right, if you want to quote to multiple posts at one time use the quote button beside it instead.
Thank you, the response is much appreciated - and no apology needed at all. Think someone else has helped with the 'how to reply' part, but also if you hit the 'quote' button, then 'insert quotes', you will find you can delete the bits which aren't relevant, and quote parts of another member's post. Thanks again for your response! (And yes, have other two legged games (mostly RDR2 or Gears Of War with a son) so for me Elite is just flying, exploring and trading.

That particular car is a 1962 948cc Mk1 MG Midget - it turned 60 earlier this year, so is pretty old to most!! But yes, they do come older.

I'm actually a little surprised you have those specs considering that it was lying around for work. You're not far off mine, which I've decided to evolve rather than outright replace. The video ram on your GPU could be a little higher than 6GB but regular ram is cheap and easy to upgrade. Though the latter isn't really necessary for games. The GPU is what counts. Personally, I wouldn't even consider buying a whole new computer with a base like this to work with.
You may be able to select a lot of ultra settings as long as you don't upscale.
