Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

by the way, has anyone heard of or played the dcs world flight simulator? i just became aware of it this weekend but it looks quite realistic and would probably require some time investment.

I'm still a noob when it comes to Planetary Scans. Only done two and failed both times. I think it's down to scanning data points in a 'vette. I'll give it one more go in the Python or SRV.
Well, quodos for taking on the challenge of target and trying to scan a comms tower data link with a 'vette. I've tried it in an Anaconda and assume the same difficulty will apply to the 'vette. The nose us too long and you probably cannot get close enough to be in range for the data link scan, and the ship is just too darn big and catches on buildings etc.
Python is likely fine, never tried it. Krait II and Phantom work well, but my favourite is the Imperial Courier with 850m/s boost and engineered 2D shields. There is a limit to how much defensive turret fire it can tank, so you have to pay attention and be accurate with positioning to have an escape route in front of you not blocked by a building. With this ship you can do the process and jump away in 5 to 10+ seconds less time than the bigger slower ships. So if you have a stack of 10 to do, you save a few minutes. If you're also stacking some mega ship datalink scans, the smaller Courier is quicker to get into the super structure and scan the ship log link and boost away for the next jump.
For me, the Courier is a master of rep and inf building and so the best at winning elections for a faction. You can still fit hatch breaker and collector limpet controller and 12t for limpets and those political prisoners and diplomatic bags you just rescued.
Cobra is probably next best, and the Phantom engineered for top speed and combat gives you a ship that can do all of the above very well and take on terrorist/pirate assassination missions.
The Courier built for speed doesn't have enough firepower, so I took the multicannons off it in the end.

That describes my experience exactly! I'm currently flying the Python, so I may give P Scans another go, or get the iCourier out from storage.

Thanks for the heads up.

There is a thread about it in the General Gaming Discussion sub-forum:

thanks. i've kicked those into my youtube history for later. i should really figure it out properly.
It's actually really easy to use. It's like a telescope with a radio dial attached. You tune the radio dial to the correct frequency for the body and then zoom in with the telescope. The visual cues are strange at first, but you quickly come to understand them. :)

I'm currently following the F1 via a live feed, while ferrying commodities from station to station (great album!). I've been letting the Auto-pilot do the grind, but have just made the mistake of not setting my throttle to zero once AP is engaged. I'm paying attention to my browser, when I noticed a white ball hurtling towards me in my peripherals. The station was behind the planet and AP disengaged, full throttle. :D

The sensor fragments finally, all get set and ready to head for Professor Palin tonight.

I am coming home station by station on the Colonia bridge which has kind of defeated the point of building up the diamondback. I guess I am aspiring to take more exobiological samples along the way, yet. I mostly miss that Cobra more than expected and got the diamondback painted gray to remind me how boring it is. I might get a new cobra and paint it gray too to show how badass it is when I get home
