Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Interesting view coming in to Hauser's Reach.

Depends on the money - and the engineering.
The Vulture is a very nice heavy fighter, but only starts to shine when you have unlocked a few engineers for thrusters and powerplant. Especially the powerplant - without engineering, the Vulture will always be limited by its poower plant.
The Federal Assault Ship (FAS) can be a very capable fighter, too. The old more or less default fighter progression was Viper -> Vulture -> FAS -> FdL (-> Python -> Corvette)
The money still has to be collected - as I said I'm saving for a new ship. Right now, I'm about 12 mil.

Enineering-wise, all I have unlocked so far are Todd "the Blaster" and Elvira, er... (I always keep forgetting and mixing her last name up with a real life person...😅) You know, the one up in Khun. Powerplant upgrades are the next on my bucket list, as I have a ship that has one large and two smaller hardpoints. But installing a tier 3 weapon into that point makes the use of any other equipment nearly impossible if you want to use it in a fight... Really, who thought it would be a good idea to combine a tier 3 weapon slot with a tier 4 powerplant?

I guess I didn't make it entirely clear in my last post, but I thought of a certain lline of ships that have the prefix "Federal" in common.
I know. I could hop over to one of the systems that have them in stock and have a look, but I would love to hear the opinions of more experienced commanders than I am.
For the intended role I would need space for one at least 32-unit cargo rack. And enough power to run an a-grade shield generator and at least two a-grade shield boosters alongside of its weapons.

I intend to expand my courier business from strictly data to specialized cargo hauls also.

You need a Python.

You're not going to make a lot of money fighting for a long time. You have to be stacking massacre missions and doing combat zones to make decent money fighting, so a fighter should not be on your list of ships to be remotely interested in at this point.

The Python will get you every ship in the game you want with relative ease. It's an excellent miner, both core and laser, and an excellent cargo hauler. I used it to unlock the federal line of ships and the Imperial line as well. In fact, I just got back from running Robigo Mine runs in one of my Pythons. Made 180 million in just under two hours and got a bunch of grade 3, 4 and 5 materials at the same time.

If I'm you, I go ahead and buy a keelback and outfit it for laser mining and/or cargo hauling because you already have the money to do it. It will get you a Python in a week or two with ease. Then you use the Python to do everything else you need - mining for cash, running courier and cargo missions to unlock Federal and Imperial ships, etc.

Then by the time you do all of that, you'll have the money and the rank to get whatever Federal and/or Imperial ship you want.

You realize that all the ships with "Federal" in their name require a certain minimum federation rank? Each of them can take a size 5 (32 tons) cargo rack.
You can get:
  • Dropship, requires rank of midshipman and 14 MCr. out of the showroom, >60 MCr. A-rated
  • Assault Ship, Chief Petty Officer, starting at 19 MCr.
  • Gunship, Ensign, starting at 35 MCr., quite a bit of fun with 7 multicannon (although frags would be more efficient)
  • Corvette, Rear Admiral, starting at 188 MCr., can easily cost you >600 MCr. as an armed cargo hauler (450 tons of cargo, 2 GJ raw/5 GJ with resistances shields, 150 DPS from 7 Multicannon, plus a fighter bay)

I)f you want to play with the loadout and engineering, I would suggest to visit Coriolis.

The class 3 weapon with class 4 power plant issue is easily solved by putting a class 3 multi cannon in it. Low power requirement and Tod the blaster can over charge it and add incendury rounds effect to take out shields. I guess you are taking about the DBX. Engineering will also solve every thing. I have run a large efficient engineered beam laser on a DBX. For now stick with multi cannons and get Tod to engineer them. Beam lasers only really work with engineering. Also unlock Felicity Farseer as she does grade 1 power plant as well as FSD engineering. Most ship builds only need grade 1 power plant engineering.

Federal Assault ship is a fun combat ship great for pirate massacre mission stacking once engineered. It also has enough space for 32t cargo for limpets and I suggest a 3C operations multi limpet controller that has 4 collectors. You can salvage the wreckage of your enemies for engineering materials.
As others say, the Python is capable as a trader, miner and is the best for lucrative Robigo Mines passenger missions that also offer engineering materials and allied status with Sirius Corporation that helps to unlock the engineer Marco Gwent. Google Engineered FSD V1 and get it, put it in the Python, get Felicity to add mass manager effect and you have a serious money making machine.
There are video guides for how to collect engineering materials efficiently. I use the Hawkes Gaming video.

Also the Federal ships apart from needing federal navy rank are heavy and have poor jump range. An Asp Explorer is the ideal exploration utility ship with great jump range (especially with that Engineered FSD V1) that fits 32t and a 6a fuel scoop plus space for collector limpets. Or use a 5A or 5B fuel scoop and 64t cargo space. It's perfect for materials collection and can get you started with passenger cabins at Robigo Mines until you have credits for a Python. It's also a fantastic smaller core miner and Ok for laser mining.

I am saving for another ship. I still am in the Suthe sytem, which means that there are some stations nearby that have the Federal line of ships availabe, are they any good for a more combat orientated build (for fighting NPCs, still)?
I intend to expand my courier business from strictly data to specialized cargo hauls also.
They all require Federal ranks to purchase of course. The Gunship and Dropship don’t suit how I fly my ships to the extent that I don’t use them at all, the Assault Ship works better for me but still not enough to get considered for much use. If you can master how to fly them all three should do well against NPCs, you generally don’t hear much about them in other rolls.

The Corvette is a different matter, I really like it, it is one of the big ships tucked away behind lots of credits and rank but apart from jump range it is a great ship for almost anything.

New to forum (y)

I'm flying in a Federal Dropship at the moment; bought the game a week or so after release, played for a while, then left it, another brief spell in 2019, and back to it now (Horizons) after a couple of years away and thoroughly enjoying it. Currently having fun doing increasingly risky courier and delivery runs, with plenty of trading on the side, and the odd bit of salvage too. In short - playing like I used to on Frontier back in the day!

Tempted to upgrade(?) to a Chieftan, but not sure how much it would cost to get it up to the capacity (80 Cargo) of my Dropship.

Back when it came out the Chieftain was claimed to be an equivalent to the Federal Assault Ship. I find it a much more lively ship handling wise than the Dropship. So upgrade seems right.

The differences in internal layout make it tricky to get an exact match in cargo capacity, it isn’t quite as roomy, but the cost of a similar build would probably be only around 20% more.

There was a time when I had a Federal Assault Ship as my main combat ship. That was a long time ago, though, before engineering was available. I remember liking it pretty well, except for the jump range.

And since we're talking about Federal ships, if you've never seen this video about the Federal Gunship it is worth a look. Humorous, a bit profane, and rather accurate for its time. It's a classic.

Okay, that were quite a few answers. To multiquote and answer them all would take me days 😉,thus here my answer(s):

First off, I don't intend to make money by killing every NPC that isn't hiding behind the next moon on three. 😉

My main way to make money right now is doing courier runs. It gives me a nice amount of money, the odd material I could need and is just what I need right now to have some fun. Right now, I am doing these runs with an AspX. It is a nice ship and built right, it is sturdy enough to survive the onslaught of those big guns long enough to jump away. But fighting a 'deadly' NPC in a 'Conda with it isn't advisable.
But my contractors often give some nice boni for getting rid of those goons. I wouldn't mind getting that extra money.
And, as I mentioned in the other post, I want to expand into delivery missions, which surely will have me find every pirate of the quadrant sailing on my wake. Here would getting rid of some of them give me a little breathing room between interdictions.

I should go and get some sleep. I keep losing track of my thoughts.
