AMD RX 6000 series driver issues & workarounds

Because it is most likely "not that simple".
-they may not even own the libraries that the calls are done from, or it ties into something else in the backend which in turn will need re-adjusting and if messed up could affect the whole game, not just orbit line shaders. We don't know.

If they can, i'm sure they will implement something similar to the fix asap.
🤭 I doubt it, this problem has already existed for many years. 🤔

I just wish FDev would be more open. They could say -

a) yes, we acknowledge the issue,
b) this is the difficulty we face to fix it, and -
c) suggestions welcome.

Hello Guys!

I'm interesting in new Radeon RX 7900XTX. Actually I use RTX 3080 with no problem with EDO. VR mode is not for me (I wear glasses), and orbit lines is off in game options. Does RX 7900XTX work fine with EDO? Do you use some RX 7900XTX cards and could tell me something how it works with EDO?

Outside of VR, there should be no particular oddities with Odyssey if one uses the orbit line shader fix (or just turns them off) on a 7900XTX. I believe @Rat Catcher has one.

Thanks Morbad for quick reply. It could be nice to see some screenshots or movie on YT how EDO looks in max settings with RX 7900xtx. Any chance for this here? EDO is my favorite game and most important thing for me is playing this with no problems.

It should look exactly the same as any other card at max settings, excepting potential orbit line issues. Identical settings look identical on all of my GPUs and I have a wide selection of GPUs.

This is from U13 when my 6800 XT was my primary gaming GPU:

Aside from a handful of custom tweaks I've made to take advantage of increasingly powerful parts, Odyssey looks the same on my 1080 ti, RTX 3080, RX 6900 XT, and my RTX 4090 as it does there.

The 7900 XTX will also be able to look the same (or slightly better), and produce higher frame rates (unless limited by the rest of the system).

So some edit is needed for improve image quality. Is it not possible on standard Radeon Adrenalin drivers (23.5.2 is the newest)?

These are mods to the game's settings files to turn things up beyond what the stock presets allow.

The drivers are wholly separate things and don't interfere with such mods.

It means that EDO on standrard Adrenalin drivers looks much worse :( . It is really sad that there is only one way to play - nVidia. Where is freedom knows from Frontier Elite II which works on Amiga, Atari and PC :( ?

Unmodded EDO looks the same on AMD and NVIDIA. Modded EDO looks the same on AMD and NVIDIA.

Morbad I have to be sure. If I buy rx 7900XTX, install the newest drivers from AMD I will see the same graphic quality in Elite Dangerous Odyssey (the same quality of shadows, light effects on planets, reflections on object surfaces, etc.), the same as on standard nVidia drivers with nvidia cards with no mods?

Yes.

Good day! I am thinking about buying a new graphics card RX 6800 XT, but I saw many posts about issues with drivers and also issues in VR mode at the Elite Dangerous. What issues are still relevant?

I can't speak to the VR, but the only issue I'm aware of is the aliasing of orbit lines. I think it's gotten better, but that's just my opinion. I haven't studied it in detail. I have an RX6600 and I love it. o7

Hello Commander,

I am using that GPU on a flat 1440p, 144 Hz display with Radeon Software 23.5.2 and I don't have much issues. VR users are still reporting that they have broken landable planets. The issues that I have are minor and may be bugs in the game. One that I have reported is this: Orca ship kit parts are black when viewed from at most 130 meters from ship. Another, that I have not reported, is such that sometimes shadow disappears from under my ship partially or totally when I move closer to the landed ship.

VR issues are mostly fixed with AMD's newest drivers, haven't flown for a few weeks due to issues with V54 on my headset but I can confirm that the planet issue is definitely resolved. Very good VR performance uplift for me as well. You should be good to go! I am using 23.7.1
