Keep in mind he said those are the new ships for 1.5.

Perhaps there are more ships in 2.0 Horizons that are only for Horizons users but will come out at the same time? I am not sure whether they have said whether all ships will be usable by everyone going forward.

In fact, that's a good Dev question.

Zac - Will all ships for ever be possible to fly by those who don't by the new seasons, or will there be ships that are exclusive to Horizons (and future seasons)?

Bigger ships (such as the Panther) won't fit through the slot, so a non-Horizons owner will not gain any benefit from owning.

It looks like a duct tape.

Excellent!

If i dont buy horizons will i be specc'd out of the game via updates? Currently dodging buying a gaming rig because it runs ok as it stands but cant help feeling im renting the game until i wont be able to play anymore.

Yes...evil devs for constantly upgrading and improving the product you bought without you having to pay anymore for it if you choose to stay with "version 1"...bad bad devs! :p

(I'm sure you will be able to play around with the graphic settings to compensate for quite some years into the future anyway...)

My compliments, FD, on your improved comms technique, as demonstrated over the last two days. Chapeau!

Thanks for sorting this out, Zac - really interesting :)
I'm watching "sky at night" right now and immediately thought about E : D (!) - could you please ask the devs if they have any intention of having volcanic activity on the horizons planets - not necessarily magma but water or other chemical based.
It'd be a bit of excitement for avoiding when coming in to land or driving the rover but also have the potential for harvesting.

Does major faction reputation decay make it harder for people who rarely play to climb navy ranks, ie do they lose progress towards the next Promotion mission if they're offline for a few days?

During Gamescom during incursion your "Ambassador" stated that better shield generators recharge shields faster. Is that something we will see at a future update, given it is not correct for 1.3?

Are conflict zones still considered placeholder content until something "real" takes their place?

Narcotics are now actually worth something. But when can we expect a demand for them on stations where they are illegal?
I bought them for 8810 per ton, which is an _excellent_ price, and every black market I tried to sell them I made a loss, because no demand.

And no Panther Clipper is a serious disappointment.

Zac,

I'm having a great time playing Elite:Dangerous. Many thanks for all your efforts, and I am very much looking forward to the future of this game, even with my brand-new iMac and Lifetime Pass.

Frontier and Elite:Dangerous exist in an interesting focal point in history. Have you read 'Ready, Player One' yet?

...And I'm quite impressed with the community and Frontier's participation in it!

So unfortunately it turned out to be true - OS X owners are busted. Metal supported compute shaders, but I guess not at level FD wants it.

As OS X OpenGL is basically dead, no Horizons for Apple owners. I feel for you guys.

I hope FD salvage OpenGL port and do port to Linux/SteamOS.

Zac, most of us are gettings our machines ready for VR. I will be great in order to make purchasing desicions this 2 things.
1. Will ED support VrSli skds as Nvidia VR SLI where each gpu renders each display?
2. Been ED an Nvidia "The way is meant to be played" program game, will you support AMD liquid VR for AMD users?
Thanks

I do hope so. Although I'm disappointed that there is no Panther Clipper, nor Lion, no Boa in that ship list. Also we see the Orca - but no Dolphin?

(Basically a lot from this list has disappeared from this list, even as ambient background ships: http://www.sharoma.com/frontierverse/ships.htm)

I was also hoping we might find the Turner class ship out there - somewhere :)

I don't think they disappeared as much as they are waiting till later. There is no point releasing the dolphin or as David hinted in the 1.4 dev live stream, the beluga, until passenger missions are in game. As with the mentioned ships I'm sure the other ships would be better paired with future updates. The Panther in previous games was said to be able to hold 2 small fighters (granted this could change for E: D), so maybe it is waiting in the shadows until we can launch fighters from our ship.

1. What is a Keelback? It's a brand new ship to the Elite universe
2. Viper MkIV, Cobra MkIV and Asp Scout are variants and while new to the universe and new designs, still taking spots that could have been used by other ships ...
3. No Dolphin, Beluga, Panther Clipper and a list of other ships from the previous games
4. If the F63 Condor is not in the main game, then Cobra MkIV only makes it 30 for those it's available to, to everyone else the number of ships is 29.

Thanks!

We started weekly but now we kind of go with 2 weeks ish. It's a little easier to manage and means we can get plenty of questions in. :)

Hi Zac,

thanks for the new "Answers by the devs". These are even more informative than the weekly dev updates IMO.

I have one suggestion, though: could you release new editions of these great threads on other weekdays than Thursdays and Fridays? Than we could look forward to three different weekdays with nice updates (every second Wednesday: "Answers by the devs", Thursdays: "dev update", Fridays: Newsletter!)

Giving us a dev update and an "answers by the devs" on the same day will only spoil us! ;)

It's a shame that we won't see the Panther Clipper. Am wondering if the new Lakon ship will be a large freighter.

Good question. With Keelbackack in the name, to me it suggests some type of camouflage; which could be beneficial in both freighters and perhaps a new stealth type ship.

Can we get an update on the Mac version of Horizons?

Unfortunately neither Open GL nor Metal on Mac support Compute Shaders and these are vital for Elite Dangerous: Horizons. We have investigated the issue at length and found that all other options currently simply won’t allow us the performance that a game of this size and detail needs. Once Macs are able to support compute shaders, or other technical options are available, we will certainly be keen on supporting that platform.

Thanks for the update - it's nice to hear some news finally, but sadly not what everyone had hoped.

Can I ask a follow-up question:

Will there be any benefit to OSX users in Season 2 if we don't get access to Horizons? Would we just get a Cobra for the money, or are there other benefits we're not aware of?

Thanks,

Foddy

So will all Season 2 (Horizons)'s content be withheld from Mac players until OSX' GL supports compute shaders, or will only planetary landings and its related new planet rendering, using these shaders, be omitted from the Season 2 releases for Mac?
