I'll be completely honest here, I'm in this game since launch and overwhelmingly the whole construct of content has been grindy as hell since day 1.
What keeps me here?
The flight model, plain and simple.
I love pvp in this game, oh and the sound engineering, but the rest of it has basically been a fairly unenjoyable means to an end.
If you want to competitively pvp in this game you are forced at every juncture to spend your time doing all sorts of crap you would rather not do.
Matt grinding, engineering, mining for rebuy credits etc, etc.
Its just the way its always been.
Ok, don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising you but here is what I conclude from what you tell me.
Your perfect game would be to take the basics of ED.
Strip out all other activities such as mining, exploring and trade because (in your ideal game) the act of PvP would generate progression that then provides the rewards. So, you kill 10 other players, you get access to better weapons for example. Rebuys are eliminated because, well, pointless. There is no in game currency. This leaves you with a solely PvP based mechanic, no need for anything else. Whilst we're at it, strip out 99% of the systems in the game. You're not interested in exploring and how many systems do you need to PvP in? One, I imagine.
So you have this game. No rebuys, no currency, ship kills gives you progression and access to better equipment. You can now log-in for hours a day and complete one simple task. Kill as many ships as possible to earn progression. That is it. Kill ships, then kill more. When you have done that, kill some more. Once over that hurdle, you go on to kill some ships. This opens up the door for you to be able to kill some ships. Now you're in a much better position to kill ships.
Each to their own and I can see how some may find that attractive but to me, it sounds like the biggest grindfest possible. One man's meat is another man's gravy. I'd last about 20 hours max in a game like that.
