Spinning sidewinder

It's now been over 3 days since I've been able to log in. All I get is the spinning sidewinder. I have tried client reinstalls, clearing saves, restarts, tickets. I have heard nothing from frontier. I know this is beta, but this is really not cool.

Since approximately 7 pm BST on Sunday I have been unable to play ED.
Get as far as the enlessly spinning sidewinder. Can only open the training Missions. Neither Solo or Open will get past the Sidewinder.
Same thing happening after 2.06 upgrade installed.
Misery loves company.

With the possible exception of the 3rd item on the list I have absolutely no idea what any of the fixes in 2.06 mean. Might has well have written "stuff".
...

Allow me to explain, as I'm quite technically adept.

Ensure correct flag set when there are repeated authority transfers
In ED netcode, a little man must walk in front of each UDP packet, carrying a yellow flag. This is a safety feature, as an out of control UDP packet can knock over rubbish bins, run over stray dogs and cause all sorts of trouble at the market.

The developers found that the little man sometimes carried a red flag. This caused problems, as red means STOP. Bulls also tend to attack anyone carrying a red flag.

When starting docked, start in your own island
Everyone who plays "Elite" wins their own tropical island! AWESOME! You just have to pick it up from the Frontier car park, and tow it to the tropics.

Bags got the spot just north of the Netherlands Antilles.

Prevent ambient NPCs spawning before player is ready
The game will now check that you've kissed the kids goodnight, poured your hot choccy, got a slice of pecan pie warmed up with a dab of cream, put on your comfy slippers, hung the "Space Police On Patrol" sign on the study door, and are sitting comfortably in front of the PC. Only then will NPCs spawn.

Additional docking logging
"I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay"... SING WITH ME.

Tighten key and seed generation flow
This is a family-friendly forum. Not going anywhere near this one, sorry.

Increment network protocol version
We have moved from protocol version 1 to protocol version 4294967295, for clarity.

Add thread locks to protect against threading issues on server
Many of our problems over the past 2 weeks were caused by people crossing threads when they tightened up their internet connection. FD have made it so the internet doesn't come loose in the first place.

Hope that helps.

Better performance all around. There are a few systems where I had some lag, but compared to the last build, this one feels more solid.

There are still plenty of things that needs fixing

1. (others already mentioned it) graphics. Fx/ lighting/shaders/shadows. Brighter/darker systems, shadows/effects, lighting on various objects in space or inside space stations and the cockpit.
2. Low volume of trade items everywhere
3. Incorrect items sold at incorrect locations. Many items sought after in missions or listed as export are unavailable.
4. empty/blank bulletin missions
5. Repeated offers of same missions to same stations
6. Missions given related to trade items, that nowhere to be found (see No 3 above)
7. 2d map of systems need to have a proper scroll left/right/up/down function..only be able to access far-drawn objects from the center stars by "lucky clicking" or nohow.
8. 3D galaxy map need to have a "center on my location" button or similar. It's still feels very raw and unpolished although responsiveness and scrolling is a lot better than previous builds.
9. Equipment info/screen is still very alpha (if you ask me). I have to click each item on each mount to figure out, whether the station has it or not.
10. There isn't enough info given on mountable items of what they do.
11. Super cruise mode needs tweaking (personal opinion). Going to near destinations (under a few thousand light seconds) is managable with fair control over speed and distance. Very far destinations are a nightmare. The super cruise start decalarating too early automatically (calculated half-distance to start slowing?) making the trip excruciatingly long unnecessarily. (example: going towards a station 260,000 ls away would make the engine speed up to 700, but would start dropping speed at 130,000, instead of having the player control the speed vs distance)
12. At super cruise mode, orbit- illustration circles don't go around the planet, they are always on front like a 2D drawing.
(Example: if a station is behind the planet in relation to the player's ship, the only way the player would know if it's behind, if checks back and forth whether the planet is closer or farther than the station orbiting it. )

13. There are systems with millions of populations, but no stations to be found. (Are they on the planets?)

14. Finding planets/heavenly objects in unknown systems is still mostly done with eyesight and looking around while turning the ship. Which century is this again? I understand, that there are other detailed and upgraded discovery scanners, but they start at a million credits and I have no clue about how much they are better than the given "stock" discovery scanner. Do we really want adventure/discover-players to consider just start trading or fighting before they go on their journey, because searching and collecting data is not not rewarding, requires funds that can be only made by switching over to an entirely different playing style?

15. Detailed surface scanner is still kinda bugged. It could be mounted in instead of a cargo or a shield, but not on an equipment mount on the ship. Many think, it's an update to the discovery scanner, not that both needed at once in order to scan systems and planets.

16. Discovery scanner should not be mounted/used as a weapon. Some reported that stations would give out fines for using it near the station, because it's fired like a weapon. Jumping to light speed or super cruise (while it works in supercruise after entering it) should not give me a warning about closing my hardpoints.

17. "Landing gear not deployed" warning , while my landing gear is deployed.

18. Upon landing, the "launch" option should not be highlighted as default. Many seasoned players automatically hit spacebar just as they finish landing, to access the station services, but when "launch" is highlighted, it's annoying to get out/ ask for landing and do the whole landing procedure all over again, because of a stupid menu button.

19. There has to be an option to skip many things. I will get attacked for my post, I'm confident about that, and some will say the usual excuse of "love it or leave it" or "do you want an instant action button" and similar responses, but in this game, there are 200 billion stars to discover, and there is plenty of grinding to do in order to earn credits, which means plenty of take offs and landings from station to station.
I may be weird, but I'm not sure if if I will still be amazed by the animation getting lowered into the "garage" for equipment, or "welcome to xyz station" screen or the countdown to enter supercruise, when it's the 10 thousandth time doing it.

There are plenty more things I can talk about and yes, half of these can by just my own opinion, not bugs, but specific features.

And I thought 05 was bad..

Same connection issues, unable to connect to server, crashing etc but now something new!! Instead of crashing to desktop I crash to a black screen with 2.06 at the bottom and the theme music playing.

Submitting ticket.

Spinning Sidewinder here too, have to kill client in Task Manager.

NetLog growing with Server resource allocation failed, group:000004ce57f4a002 subgroup:DockingBays requested:1 messages.

I have tried resolving it on PC side but everything is fine outside of Elite Dangerous Client. It's only when in game that the CPU hits 100% all 6 cores are in full swing and your forced to stutter your way to your destination.

This may or may not help, and you may have already tried this, but I had the same thing with the 2.04 -> 2.05 upgrade, so I completely uninstalled (including deleting the two FD folders under /Appdata; if you have lots of custom control bindings copy the 'bindings' folder out of there before you delete and replace it when you reinstall). Restart the machine, then download the launcher again and reinstall.

I hope that helps and thanks FD for your continued efforts. Best 100euro I've ever spent.

Good post. I think many things on your list are not bugs but obviously just unfinished work in progress. I do agree with this one though. Is supercruise maximum speed is affected by the distance from a destination or the strength of its gravity well, ie mass / (distance^2)?

Off the top of my head, it seems that you can continue to accelerate whilst the gravity field is getting weaker in your direction of travel, but as soon as you "cross the watershed" and start moving "downhill" towards a body, your engines begin to decelerate. I wonder whether the first differential of gravity field strength is the determining factor, not field strength itself.

Not sure what happened earlier, but I had a lot of difficulties getting in-game. Tried it again after restarting my PC and I'm in-game even faster than before. Thanks!

Same for me with the black screen. A look in the taskmanager shows, that one of my cores runs at full load until I kill the EliteDangerous32.exe task. Will try the complete reinstall solution that Grumbleweed mentioned when I come home.

I played a bit last night and still had 2 minor existing issues.

First was the mass lock when buying a new FSD that requires and exit and re-entry and i had a 401 error when trying to upgrade thrusters. Both on a Cobra.

I didn't ticket as these are existing issues.

Other than that it seemed fine. Seemed to be more bad guys in USSs too, still no interdictions :(

Might just have been me but have the small load courier runs on the BB been nerfed? The prices definitely seemed to be a bit lower than the back end of last week when I last played before last night.

I've found a sweet spot where there are loads of courier missions and they are pretty highly paid. I'm making 40,000 - 50,000 credits every run between 2 systems in a Viper to allow me to upgrade it to a lethal killing machine. I think the missions are still good but you might have to find the right systems!

I think this "stuff" is meant to improve performance - that's my take on it anyway. Jesting aside - a bit more of a layman's non-technical explanation of fixes moving would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks for all the hard work!

I've seen a few posts like this. I'll make sure to double check with the devs next time we put a change log up, and explain it in non-technical terms.

Sorry about that!

About NPC spawning: I have noticed that as I approach Outposts, especially in places with Outposts surrounded by armed Eagle patrols such as Meliae, as soon as you enter the station vicinity from supercruise, the patrol ships also hyperspace in a second later en masse. It looks a bit disconcerting.

I could finally load the game again, I did it once just to see if I could before I had to go out, the game loaded me into Romaneks Folley. I thought great stuff. Logged out. Came back tonight, tried to login and I just get the spinning ship again.

I saw some people say clear your save, so I tried that, and I could log in again.

Then I just got stuck in hyperspace.

On release will you have any servers located in Australasia? I am playing from NZ and I am always getting disconnected. No other network issues on other games. I'm not sure if my location is to blame for all my issues, but have a feeling it's not helping.

Really looking forward to this game when it's got these things ironed out. Haven't really been able to participate since the last wipe, logging in has been the biggest problem.

I'll say this though: loading up games in Private mode seems much faster - it feels as if another second and a half has been shaved off even compared to 2.05. The Galaxy map also seems to load up instantly, and I have had no softlocks while exiting supercruise or entering hyperspace. (Then again, I have been alone, and others trying to enter the station vicinity where I am have reported lengthy softlocks.)

There have been a few BSODs, though, but this morning I've been greeted with 18 OS updates for my Windows 7.
