I've been lurking for a while, and this is my first forum post. Regarding the detailed planetary maps, I have a suggestion that might(?) be a good compromise.
What if we could "honk" the discovery scanner, and that would give us the option to zoom in on the planetary surface map (so no more wireframe), BUT we can't rotate the view around - the view is locked to the side of the planet that at any time faces the ship, so simulating a powerful telescope. Possibly also with some restriction with how far in we can zoom, but not too restricted, as an important feature here would be the ability to discern planet types and make a judgement on whether it is worth it to fly out there for a detailed scan.
With a basic or advanced surface scan, the view of that planet could then be unlocked for rotating the view and unrestricted zoom. This would allow for a more detailed survey where one can look for interesting places, mountain ranges, canyons etc.
This way, there will be a reason to fly out there (however scanning for materials and getting extra credits is already a reason, as is landing on the planet), but the new feature of being able to zoom in and have a much more detailed look at the planet, would make life much easier for those of us who want to find interesting worlds but don't want to look at that spinning scanner symbols for X seconds over and over and over and over and over again. It makes it easier to be selective about the planets we explore, without giving away everything about it.

But as I say, don't make the zoom too restricted after the first discovery scan. Let us zoom enough in to be able to judge wheter that little ice world has interesting geological features that we wish to explore further.
