Blocking in Elite Dangerous

Yeah I know - it's what I use if I have to.

What I was saying was (sarcastically) -

"The game is making me gank people! It's not my fault!"

In response to someone saying the game design creates the ganking "problem"

I disagree, it's peoples behaviuor, because that's literally what ganking is.
Yeah, but if you design properly you wouldn't need to have to encounter that kind of beaviour. I, too, think it's botched design.

Things could be done - but that doesn't absolve gankers of any responsibility for being... less than savoury folk (from my view, in some circumstances)

If people weren't doobidy dabs- the design wouldn't be an issue.
Works both ways see.

Because EvE, for example, a game which was designed with PvP as a major part of it and only has the one mode, doesn't have gankers at all does it?

Every game that allows PvP has gankers, whether it's spawn camping in FPS (though this can stray into griefing), stealth insta killing in RPGs, or insta killing underpowered ships in Space games. It's just how some people play games.

Yes, or rather "would work", because it doesn't really work so well. And that's why I think design should account for it - you can't rely on people not being digs.

Not every game that has coop pve pits those against pvp players and still sells it as "this game can all" MP modes.

The game do all MP modes PVE, co-op PVE, PVP, co-op PVP or a mixture of them all. Some people just can't accept that other players are allowed to have different subjective preferences on which of those they prefer.

Not sure what how a game is advertised has to do with certain people playing games that way. All I was pointing out is that it doesn't matter how you design a game, people will still find ways to, and enjoy, ganking others. Because that's what they enjoy.

The whole fallacy portrayed by people that if Elite was designed more with PvP in mind people wouldn't gank, is just that, a fallacy.

It's part of games that contain PvP, and you just have to deal with it. In the same way that they have to deal with measures put in place to allow people to avoid it.

One of the main reasons why I, in general, put any new games on my personal block list as in "am not now, will never be interested" whenever I see the letters "MP" anywhere in the announcement.

Not because I don't enjoy playing with other people but because humanity, being what it is, simply cannot take anything, no matter how wonderful it might be, and not instantly turn it into.

Present company excluded, of course.

Also, every game that has MP in it tends to turn into CoD instantly. Now, I don't dislike CoD at all, but I'd rather not have every single one of the games I play turn into it. If that's what I wanted, I could just play CoD all the time until I keeled over, frothing at the mouth, and had an aneurysm.

Well, I disagree that ED PvE needs to contain PvP.

Apart from those who desire just a 'single player' experience (of which a few have posted saying just that) choosing to play in PG, even if alone most of the time, does permit the invitation of (an)other player(s) to join in. Great play with like-minded others, no bother from those who may not share the same 'ideals'. My favourite mode - I think one's favourite mode should have an option to set it as default.

I didn't say it did. And in two of the three modes, it doesn't.
Yes, yes. The thing is - when I play a coop game - I don't want any griefers in there. And that is down to design, because if there was seperate modes for PvP and PvE (a well-tested and reliable procedure in MMOs) I wouldn't need to bother about some edgelord trying to drive me to ever higher performances when that is so totally what I don't need for relaxing game-time.

That has nothing to do with the game having a bad design. It is to do with the game not being designed the way you want it to be. Elite isn't a pure co-op game, but it has co-op elements if you choose to engage with them. Some MMOs have a hard split between PvP and PvE and some don't. Are you saying that all that don't are poorly designed? Because that's not the case I'm afraid.

Still we've come a long way from why the block function is a good thing ;)

So SOLO or PG where PvP isnt't allowed doesn't cover this???

PG is literally a joke. You have to leave the game, find a group, then ask for entry, then wait to be accepted, then rejoin the game, then find out the limited number of slots available in that pg are taken by people that have not played in months or years.
It's fine for a smallish group of friends or a squadron, but not really all that great for groups the size of Mobius.

My PG is composed of my local gaming group, plus some friends. It's not expected to be a large group. Elite, I have found, is not for everyone. :(

I'm still using my "reverse iron man" blocking technique, updating my list last night after dying at the hands of a stone cold murderer. At least that murderer got to experience the thrill of the kill, even if it was just the one time. If I were playing in Solo, they wouldn't even have had that.
