Perhaps thats the decision which is being wrangled over - i.e. are we now ready to admit that previously announced last gen console released are not achievable?
It somewhat complicates the issue being that the new/current gen is backwards compatible (would Elite get a performance boost from this anyway?), and that this gen has yet to really get going (at least from where I look) thus the life of the previous gen is being artificially extended. With those caveats being said, the discussion would be similar to that of 'shall we release x game on 3DS now that the Switch is out?" It doesn't really make too much sense.
I'm also sure that an overwhelming part of the console users are looking to upgrade to the new gen, if they haven't already, and one has to wonder if
any game studio would be ready to sink a large amount of development time & cost into supporting a last gen title (cash cow titles excluded)? I feel like that it would be more difficult to sell the idea of
not dropping the console ports to the financial guys, being that the bottom line is their main priority rather than the feels of console users. Though of course, the profit expectations from that have a part to play, but that was last year and one also wonders if that ship has sailed, FDev have already written that revenue off it seems.
