Chieftain Size and perhaps other specs

Couple things:
• I don't think we can use any of the digital paintings for scale as they are only concept art and won't necessarily reflect the asset geometry accurately.
• The Chieftain cockpit is not the same as any of the other Lakon cockpits. While similar in style to many of them it is not the same cockpit, and as such cannot be used for scale, either.
• In the rotating 3d model animation, I have only ever been able to observe one chair in the cockpit (not saying there aren't more, just that I can only *see* 1 of them).
• The Chieftain model (as well as the Krait) already has guns on it. They are all side-by-side double-barreled things. I don't recognize them but to my eye they bear a superficial resemblance to Large Beam lasers. Does anyone know what those are? Would probably be the most accurate way to establish size.
• Design sensibility reminds me of the old Hunter concept art: http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/443372868max.jpg
• Cargo hatch is visible in the top & bottom view image, buuuuut are all cargo hatches the same size?
• So far I'm most convinced by the speculation from others that it's a medium ship around the same size as Federal Gunship.

Elite concept art games always differ wildly from finished 3d model. Remember the Beluga, the Vulture, the Cutter. Concept art is to be taken with a grain of salt.
So let´s wait and see before assuming stuff as facts.

Agreed. But. They did show 3D models.

Still looks like a type 6 frame with add on bits to me, so a medium ship is what I'm expecting but smaller than a python.

I don't think it will be a huge ship, I agree with you that this is a medium ship, so I guess it will be in the range of T6 - Python as you said.

First, FDEV want a ship that most players can afford, second the big ships are for the players who a rolling in money and therefore they are not on top of the list when you need to develop new content. A new ship means paint jobs, ship kits and so on, all connected to monetization of what is being introduced into the game, and that is NOT necessary a bad thing.

I still believe FDEV need to bring in some huge big butt cargo ships, mega bulk freighters that can jump +25LY from stock.
There is a large part of the community who loves to tuck around in space trucks delivering cargo to all the stations. This could also be used to make the markets more alive and inject more life into the economy.

However to do that we will need a new mechanics to where these big ships can dock and off/on load their cargo to the stations.
They should be huge, slow, expensive to operate by doable for solo players, maybe with NPC Crew and a part of the money sink to keep the ships running. Being able to hire an NPC crew, you will need to train and pay money to keep would be a good thing for the game and add some depth to the game. Not everybody like to pew pew all day long, some just want to "drive" a big space truck around in the black.

What we got now more or less are a pizza delivering service.

Yup, in both this and the Krait's case we saw models not artwork, and they even explained that what we were seeing was an untextured model, so we should expect what we saw.

As for size and function, I hope the Chieftain provides competition for the Python, which is pretty much unique in its size and capabilities.

I don't understand the fuss about the pads, most missions run to proper stations - it is very rare that I can't accept a mission because the ship is too large.

Except you don't reject the mission, the game does it for you.

There's a heck of a lot of outstation missions for Vipers and smaller ships around the current CG outstation at Khun; I've been running some of them.

The real question is, if this is going to be the Alliance's medium ship, just how awesome is its bigger bro going to be? [hehe]

The real question is, will the Chieftain's jump range will be decent ?

If the jump is trash like the gunship/Fdl, then Frontier should simply abandon this concept and focus on something else.
But if the jump is ok, then yea count me in. :)

Anyway, this ship will obviously be a direct competitor to FAS/Gunship/FdL, each of these ships has their own edge on others:
FAS:
- speed
- maneuverability
- hull tank
- multi-purpose features (internal/fuel tank/jump range)
FdL:
- speed
- lateral speed
- good firepower
- shield tank
Gunship:
- extreme firepower
- hull tank
- deployable fighter

the Chieftain has obviously a very aggressive look, but looks to be more sided towards speed than hull resistance, so my guess is:
Chieftain:
- speed
- good firepower
- shield tank
- multipurpose features (internal/fuel tank/jump range)

it won't be as agile than the FdL/FAS but neither as rigide as the Gunship, if i'm right about all this then i found my ship.

Pontoons suggest manoeuvrability (rather than speed necessarily), plus stuff with wings/pontoons have to spread their shield over a larger volume than simpler designs I think (I'm sure there are exceptions).

So I'd not rule out speed but I'd reckon good manoeuvrability, mediocre shields, medium ship on a par with the FAS or possibly FGS.

Unfortunately the pontoons don't actually imply anything, as a counter example I give you the keelback. That also has rotating thrusters that suggest a very agile ship, but in reality it's anything but.

I'm thinking this too, except I expect it to trade some of the FDLs shield strength for a few of the FGS hardpoints. The question is if it will have a fighter bay, cos if it does, it will have to sacrifice either some speed or maneuverability for it.

IMHO it will compete with the dropship variants in firepower.

so 4 medium weapons above the cockpit, and maybe 2 mediums below.
give it 5 utility slots (3 top and 2 bottom),
together with at least two class 6 internal slots

and i would totally fine with it.
