After 28 months, correct me if I am wrong, wait time since carriers was announced, I am expecting the greatest carrier update ever!
moderate your expectations. it will be just a big ship that you can’t even control.
you will be able to set a point within a radius of 500 light-years and he will jump there, and stand motionless there. that's all.
and yes. most likely it will be postponed to the end of 2020.

Or fix bugs that may hopefully prevent some of those future bugs from appearing? If you HAD the opportunity to correct some of your work now, or just let it pile onto more work you’ll have in the future, wouldn’t you take care of it now, first, BEFORE you get the additional work you KNOW will come?

This is a well-known concept in IT generally called "technical debt." Ignoring it means it piles up and becomes impossible. So yes, I think for them to stop for a time and take care of some of this technical debt is an excellent idea.

Community Update
I totally and completely and happily and unblushingly support this decision!

It's the only way to win the "end game".

I do hope this includes not only fixing bugs, but revisiting incomplete features like multicrew, as well as questionable design decisions like certain UI pop-ups, analysis mode in its current state, etc. There's a lot of underutilized mechanics already in the game that just need to be polished.

Regarding fleet carriers, I'm not disappointed, but I do think you will need to do something to keep the community engaged between now and the next big content release. This means really engaging Interstellar Initiatives with multiple, parallel CGs that have huge and lasting effects on the galaxy and involve many different facets of gameplay, including PvP. It's also time to flip the switch on Rumors in the Codex and other "place holders" in the game. You gave us cosmetics to buy, now give us a reason to play the game we currently have so that we may care enough to buy them.

Bravo Zulu on your decision Frontier! I hope the execution of this decision goes as planned.

Indeed I am disappointed, but...

It should be said that this is one of the more honest and appreciated posts by the team in some time. The acknowledgement of the majority of the community's demand for better testing and a focus on improving existing features and fixing existing bugs is a breath of fresh air! Like many others, I have a TON of anger when it comes to how Elite has been developed but that anger is largely based on what currently is rather than what could be.

All that said, this is exactly the sort of communication I want to see. Transparent. Honest. Commitments.

Now keep those commitments, and we'll be on a fast-track towards a great experience. Elite already has incredible features if they only worked as I imagine they were intended to work. Fleet Carriers are super exciting, but you're 100% spot on that the game must be in a better place before introducing anything else of substance.

+1 for Good Communication!

Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but will FD announce ahead of time what parts of the game will be getting fixed / balanced again? Will it be a lucky dip if your bug gets fixed, will we vote on whats 'important' or is it in bug popularity on the tracker? What will the aims and scope be- will FD say 'these are the fixes' or will specific areas see improvements (for example, one update might have a multiplayer focus, the next exploration, the next Powerplay etc)?

Six Month Delay?

You know this was an announced Feature of ED and has been delayed 22months now already, right?
Unfortunately yes.

There are also the icy planets waiting.

The company has grown a lot in recent months. Many new people have arrived.

Frontier was a small compagny before. Digesting all these changes should not be easy.

Coordinate all the services and new people too.

The bugs do not come by chance.

Absolutely agree with this. I just feel like the timing is a bit unfortunate, considering we're already in a content drought with Thargoids basically in retreat and nothing new or interesting happening around the galaxy from a narrative point of view. A lot of things got dialed back this year, first GalNet, then the Goids and now carriers are delayed for another 6 months. The next few months will be rough for this game, as sad as that is.

Well, it sucks to have the carriers delayed....but....the game's been pretty much unplayable for me. Invincible thargoid glitches and all that put me off too much. Please fix some of the longstanding bugs. One of the worst ones during DW2 was the amplified SRV damage bug that's literally the most known about and longstanding unfixed bug that caused a big headache during the expedition. Have friends? Want to play around in SRV's? Having more than 4 commanders in an instance made those things more fragile than wet paper.

Want to do some wing core mining? Not happening, ordnance detonation was severely glitched to the point that it didn't matter if you were in a wing or not. If you had multiple commanders around you just weren't core mining and that's all there is to it.

Yes please fix bugs. Carriers would be sweet and all, but that would've been putting the cart before the horse.
Bug fixing should be ongoing, not at the cost of an extension to a massive content drought

If FDev actually listened to the community, uses the beta's to their fullest and fix this game near completely (like 95%) then I'll enjoy seeing what else people will dig up to complain about. Oh I know, why can't my commander fly naked!! She's the only one in the darn ship!

Me personally? Throw it all away and work on something else. No shortage of jobs for game developers these days and no shame in abondoning what feels like a sinking ship. But that's just me. I also never managed to turn in assignments back then and would never do make up work. But I was never a good student.

Interesting.

All your updates/eggs in one basket. I guess the proof will be in the eating now. If the game state doesn't improve significantly then the Carriers might as well never arrive.

I'm... On the fence. I'm not able to play currently (tiny person means games must have pause button) so I will watch and hopefully come back to ED fresh.

Best of luck.
