Its simply not possible. If there was a feature ready to go, they wouldn't have to disappoint people in the first place, they could just proceed as planned and not have to make this statement. Its simply madness to think frontier has the feature ready to go, and then decided to hold it back and disappoint players... because players asked to be disappointed. Thats madness. No.

As someone else suggested, their entire hook for the christmas sales is gone. They've forfeited the only marketing headline this year because players asked for it? Please be real.
Nobody knows at this point what the story is. You may well be right. But my guess is a little different.

I think they asked the question "If we release carriers in December, will we have as many bugs as in September?" and nobody could deny it. Maybe they wouldn't be spread all over the game, but there would be bugs. And then they read the forums with everyone saying what they want to do with carriers and none of it will be possible, because carriers are just mobile space stations with most of the interesting stuff chopped out. And there were interesting edge cases discussed which they hadn't thought of.

So their situation was, they could push for a December release, maybe chopping QA back as hard as they dared and developing right up to the line, just like games companies traditionally do. But the outcry over bugs would be massive and everyone would be disappointed with carriers.

So then they had to decide how to make the Carriers release work for Frontier. And the answer was, give the developers another couple of months, give QA enough time to do a good job, and fix all the weak code in the rest of the game that might break when they get added in.

...I keep getting killed by thargoids. When is that going to get fixed?..

Seriously - to hold things back is fine (imo). The important thing is to make the community aware early on and not leave it till the last min when (we?) would then seem to get thargy. Its a complex game this, hosted over multiple platforms so its great to see it continually being dev'd / supported. Thanks and keep going!

Have you considered that the shrieking mass of critics on social media aren't actually the fanbase?
Yes I have, and that seems to be the basic problem. FD haven't .. The fanbase is who you have to keep happy, because if you don't, anyone looking in from the outside sees that fans of this stuff don't even like it, why on Earth would they?
Short version: I think this delay will make many of the community better people.

tldr: Happy fans who already have what they want don't complain, unhappy fans who don't have what they want do. That's why Yes/No referenda are always biased; people who already have what they want don't bother to vote in them.

It's a question of what percentage of the fanbase are 'shrieking', and whether their 'shrieking' is down to being unhappy with the game or with something else. There are some quite histrionic and actionably insulting comments on this thread. But I expect that the actual percentage of the fanbase who are 'shrieking' is quite small. It just seems larger than the percentage of happy fans because it is louder.

It is sucky that Frontier promised Fleet Carriers for Christmas and then announced that they can't deliver for another six months, without giving a clear road map beyond that they're going to clean up the bugs for now, and then maybe deliver some more of DBOBE's ambitious ten-year vision at the end of next year. But reading some of the comments here, I now understand why Frontier ignore the community so much and just get on with their own thing without explanation. You give complaining gamers whose compassion doesn't extend beyond their gaming what they want, you teach them that if they complain enough, they can get more of what they want, and if they still don't get what they want, they only have to complain more and louder until they eventually do. Frontier are doing the right thing.

I'm reading evidence of feature creep and the bug fixing is just juggling of work to have something happen in December. There may even be bugs directly related to the Carrier ambition but there is a lot emphasis on "old bugs" in the announcement which sounds more like the Dec beta is aimed as a general crowd pleaser.

This caught my eye, "even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way", said outside of the "refining carriers" and "addressing old bugs". Then there was the twitter post from a developer:

sounds like some sort of new feature to me or an improvement to an existing feature that can be used by Carriers to improve the gameplay... Carriers are there surely to take you into the Black, some sort of new exploration tool or multi-player enchancement? Or to go completely leftfield how about Ice Planets making an appearance? Although to temper those thoughts, would seem odd not to shout aloud about it as it would make a good excuse!

Well yea, but everything is exciting to Frontier. I do hope for the best, though.

Sorry stopping at this part (Will read on after)

"That's why Yes/No referenda are always biased; people who already have what they want don't bother to vote in them."

Err what? ... That sound suspiciously like some who voted for something that went the other way.

and you know, I seem to be starting to guess why the Fdevs moved the carriers release. in fact, I can conclude that this decision is purely “political”, since carriers will certainly not be anything more than just a large stationary object, on which players can land their ships and replenish supplies, as well as who can jump for 500 years . which means the release of carriers will not bring any new mechanics. which means that all the mechanics for him are already in the game from its very start. when transferring carriers, they wanted to “punish” the community for “daring” to point out bugs and oh dear, ask for their corrections. they decided "ah, do you want us to fix bugs ?! fine, we will do it
now as a minimum half a year there will be nothing but fixing bugs! " but in my opinion, by doing so, the fdev was no longer punished but really disappointed the community, at least part of it. although, I personally did not see in the appeals or that petition requests to fix bugs instead of releasing new content.

This all thing is really amazing. Frontier for years now are not releasing any major content, i dont even remember how many years have passed from horizons release, they constantly introduce new bugs, they keep bringing back old bugs, keep releasing half baked stuff with absolutelly no intention of fixing them like multicrew, power play and cqc, they repeatedly cancel dates and delay "minor" content, they again delay for 8 months the allready delayed for a year carriers, and they pretty much blame the community for that delay (yea really sorry for asking for this incredible mess to be fixed), which ofc is not the players fault that they brake the game every single freakin time there is an update and, and.. people are still like.. oh thats the right thing to do.. to do exactly what?? Stop the development in order to "fix" the game again?? Doesn't that ring a bell??

I mean its like a social experiment by now.
I just hope after all the 2020 trailers and all the hype build up for the new era, they come out and delay it for.. another 2 or 3 years lets say.. just to see what happens!!

How are we all doing today? What stage are we at?
Well, because of some other threads, I went and had a real good root about in the bug reports...
Dear me, it is so depressing.
The number of bugs? No, the number of bug reports that are not bugs.

How FDev sorts through all that :poop: I have no idea.

Anyway, I've no idea how the game works, so I'm off to file some pointless 'bug' reports (that are not bugs).

Get rid of the Arx system and return the store to payment by card or steam wallet. The free arx are not free in any case as you have hiked the price of popular paint jobs to pay for the 20p per week giveaway. As a player with over 3000 hours of ED behind me I have to ask why is it that a little group of Devs like Hello Games can give so much to their playerbase and make so much space sim progress than the mighty team at Frontier Developments? I'm sorry but there is something wrong somewhere.

I have 200 US Dollars that say otherwise. I'll even give you 2 to 1. Bet is no paid DLC in 2020.
I'm not taking that bet, but I'd say it was more likely than not we will get a beta in 2020. They'll push that hard but the actual release might be a couple of weeks into 2021. I'd rather they did that than release without a beta on 20th December. We'd have a white Christmas, but it wouldn't be snow.
