Console Update

As someone who has been patiently waiting for Odyssey on my Series X for a long time, this is EXTREMELY disappointing. It’s clear FD bit off more than they could chew with Oryssey, and now console communities have to die to shift resources to fixing things on PC.

I hope that there will be migration for accounts (including discovery data) and honestly I hope we are provided with codes so we don’t have to re-purchase the game just because FD pulled the plug. Overall, I’m just beyond disappointed at this decision.

Called it.

It's terrible news for console CMDRs, and for the future of Elite Dangerous as a live service game.

Elite will remain limited product with smaller profitability potential relative to Frontier's other, cross platform games. Which will have it's own implications...

It's been a wonderful yet frustrating ride since PS4 launch in 2017.

o7 and good luck

Thanks for the update.

Can we get clarification that this also means Odyssey will not be developed for PS5 and Xbox Series?
And so consoles go the same way as Macs. When I first bought in to Premium Beta I did is because I could eventually play on my Mac. I put up with running dual boot until the Mac client was released, then "happy days". Until Mac chose a different route for graphics, then the Mac client was kicked into the "too hard" bin, and Mac players were forced to buy PC's or stop playing.
And now consoles have gone into the "too hard" bucket too.
I suspect that the real problem lies in the Cobra Engine codebase, rather than on the target platforms. You only have to read the developer comments available on Glass DOor or in the forums to see that the Cobra Engine has problems. Until these are resolved I suspect we will continue to see poor performance, unexplained issues and new bugs introduced with every updsate.
My heart goes out to the console community, but (being honest) the writing has been on the wall ever since the disastrous release of Odyssey.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Thanks for the update.
I know how difficult is, and how hard is to maintain a live game in multiple platforms.
Now, Elite can really move forward.

The only think I would suggest, is to work in away to migrate all CMDR data to PC; and not only the money.

Cheers,

I agree

Thanks

As a side note, it's a shame that you guys can't give any details on why you have made this decision. But I understand Frontier's reluctance to discuss it.
Please, Don't say that my friend. I'm a huge fan, I take a LOT of heat here in the forum posting your videos, but don't say "it's a shame".
Fdev explained why: single codebase.
Develop for multiple platforms is not easy, and for a live game is even harder. Enter in the details on that would only make things worse.

Now is time to move forward and (at least try) to focus on the good side. Elite will move forward; faster with focous.

Cheers

Remember our thread when people call us crazy to say that would be almost impossible to port Odyssey do consoles? Yeah... :)
Even more disappointing is no PS5 or SX versions.
We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game..

Best part of the news I have been waiting for a year to hear.
Thanks for the sympathy, very much appreciated.

Regarding the update I'm glad it's not coming to console as it looks bad anyway

Also I'm hoping that you will actually fix horizons for console or are you planning on leaving it in its current state?

We are exploring options for transfers but at present have nothing to announce.
Well, thanks for throwing my 4000 hours of progress, hundreds of dollars of cosmetic purchases, and love for your company into the trash. Good luck moving forward. A transfer is the least you could offer your customers but we've come to learn to expect nothing but disappoint from you so we won't hold our breath.
