Console Update

I hope it wasn’t because of the picture I tweeted lord brebus.

Servers will remain on, you will still be able to play Horizons content.
But why ?
No rank progression , no new ships srv. I have a few months in game time so done a little bit . But this whilst expected ( at least last gen ) is a huge kick in the unmentionables. Why would I put any more effort in . You couldn't even be bothered to look into bringing those who wanted to buy a PC to port all across ?
It's been fun since my speccie days and I thank you for that .

While this is obviously disappointing news for console players, Horizons will live on, and Horizons is a great game.

Streamlining the scope to ED:O should bring valuable resources together, advancing the progress of ED:O in a controlled, manageable way, and presumably result in a higher quality product.

The decision makes sense to me.

Just for those acting as if they're destroying everything relating to consoles...

The console versions aren't being shut down and destroyed, they're just not going to get Odyssey and/or the 4.0 client. It sucks, yes, but you can still continue to play Horizons.
No odyssey for consoles.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
o7 to my console commanders. While I'm sure nobody is happy about this (most of all Frontier) if it's what is best for the game long term I understand. I'm on PC so while this has little to no effect on me, I'm sad to see us have to leave so many by the wayside.

Unfortunate but completely understandable as the 8th Gen consoles are nearing a decade old. Not very feasible to try to make it work, instead of moving on.

Hopefully Elite Dangerous and it's expansions will come to next generation consoles in a few years perhaps.

For now, I really hope Fdev will work on making it possible for consolers to transfer their accounts to PC

Well, there goes my x-box account. Pity. I suspected this was on the cards when the updates weren't improving the framerate enough to make Odyssey run at an acceptable fps on X-box / PS4 equivalent PCs. I suspect that one of the reasons for the comms blackout was they were trying to get Odyssey running on consoles but it turned out that it was too tough a nut to crack. After Cyberpunk, I suspect there's no way Odyssey would have made it through console certification process with a low fps. I'm sorry that console only players have had this news and I do hope that fdev will offer a transfer service for any console player to PC, if they they want to continue with Odyssey.

Now that this is out the way, I hope that we're going to start getting comms and news about the future developments.

Why not?
I had great time on my XB in the last year, even tho i had also played EDO on PC.
I even got top25% in the last Colonia Bridge CG that finished today.

While this is obviously disappointing news for console players, Horizons will live on, and Horizons is a great game.

Yeap, this ☝️

Although i'm really wondering if the codebase for PC will be merged and the PC players get the EDO client
So we will have EDO on PC (without the current split of the PC player base) and Horizons on Consoles

And so consoles go the same way as Macs. When I first bought in to Premium Beta I did is because I could eventually play on my Mac. I put up with running dual boot until the Mac client was released, then "happy days". Until Mac chose a different route for graphics, then the Mac client was kicked into the "too hard" bin, and Mac players were forced to buy PC's or stop playing.
And now consoles have gone into the "too hard" bucket too.
I suspect that the real problem lies in the Cobra Engine codebase, rather than on the target platforms. You only have to read the developer comments available on Glass DOor or in the forums to see that the Cobra Engine has problems. Until these are resolved I suspect we will continue to see poor performance, unexplained issues and new bugs introduced with every updsate.
My heart goes out to the console community, but (being honest) the writing has been on the wall ever since the disastrous release of Odyssey.
And now  Silicon is hands down the most powerful platform available. Oh, the irony…
