DLC18 discussion and predictions

Call me unpopular. I really want the Golden Jackal as that is a canid member we don’t currently have (I know “jackals” in the canid family tree is a bit confusing (look it up and you will see how unrelated some jackals are) and they are a good rep for Eurasia.
Tanukis are a popular request which leads me to believing they could make the cut.
I think we have enough wolves and foxes in game. I love canids very much ftr.
Plus we didn’t get any canids in 2023 so I say it’s time for a new canid.

They're pests here too!
From what I know, there's a huge introduced population in the UK, and as for Italy... according to one keeper at the local zoo - which we'll refer to as The Bison Man - "we had 15 or 16 of them but they forced us to get rid of most of em"

Edit: it's late and I didn't realise that you're probably from the UK 😅 I'm just really confused at this time of day
Yeah, I’m in the uk, and I’ve never seen a muntjac in the zoo! In fields in the countryside, yes, and they are cute!

I would argue that the Timber Wolf in the game is the generic Gray Wolf as well and applies to any forest-dwelling Gray Wolf subspecies, including both North American subspecies and Eurasian subspecies that live in forests. I've seen some people suggest that it's specifically the Mackenzie Valley/ Northwestern subspecies from North America but I have no idea where they got that evidence/idea from to support that. Timber Wolf is just a slang term that refers to any subspecies of Gray Wolf that lives in a forest environment. The choice to call them Timber Wolves in the game rather than simply Gray Wolves is quite odd to me though. In contrast, Indian Wolves have been proven more ancient than other Grey Wolf subspecies, quite genetically distinct, and there's been on-going debates on whether they should be considered a separate species due to the large genetic differences between them and other gray wolf subspecies.

It’s probably to overcome regional spelling differences but then they chose the grey seal later…

They're not exact because, from what we can see here, this pack doesn't come with any new pieces and so has to use an approximation of what Himalayan/Tibetan themeing would look like using pieces that are already in the game.

If you're not going to be convinced then fair enough, I just think the cover image would be inherently deceitful if it wasn't a mountains pack haha.
the lanterns are questionable we definitely already have the flags and the tent is so far in the back we have no idea if its one solid piece or made with pre existing stuff.
Also I agree that there are so many things they did to hint at mountains the animal choice 1 being a mountain caprine and 1 being an animal well known to live in a mountainous regions. 2 of the animals are sitting on rocks the baboon is even sitting on a model cliff. the foggy scenery and temperate foliage also suggest mountains even if indirectly and in general the terrain is slopy and uneven.

If it were to be a generic zoo keepers collection the scene would be very different the keeper would be the focus we would see fencing and backstage items as the prominent scenery not flags and asian lanterns and a foggy rocky temperate landscape.
The keeper means nothing its just set dressing because its a zoo game and we are looking into a habitat.
I know this was pages ago but people need to stop lying about this (or at least, you know, do two seconds of googling the animals).

The sand cat range extends all the way into Central Asia, and the Dromedary's range extends into Asia as well (Middle East). Sure, we missed out on something from Australia, but what the hell does anyone expect from the "Arid Animal Pack"? Seriously, I have yet to actually see anyone suggest a suitable species as a replacement that isn't still an African animal (such as the Hamadryas baboon). The only other one that ever came up was the Indian crested porcupine instead of the African, but it's functionally identical.

Anything else would have been incredibly niche, beyond perhaps the Persian onager or something, but then you'd all bemoan the fact that the pack contained two wild asses.
I agree africa deserts are definitely the most prominent but something as simple as the perentie or any other desert monitor would of been good. While not as needed something like a coyote could add to american deserts.

even then arid as a term doesnt only mean deserts there are plenty of animals in dry environments that could of worked.

Peccary, mara, rhea, perentie, echidna all could have work in a theme that is just called arid. And id argue that none of these is any more niche than addax or dama for example.
Ofcourse we just came of the heels of a monitor and got the peccary later that year, but there were plenty of deserty animals that could also have work really well in the pack.
While yeah having some africa in a desert pack is understandable and needed, a pack just called arid was by no mean bound to be african exclussive (plus the two guys that range into asia)

Hi. I just joined the forums but I've been lurking on this thread for a while. I'm really hoping for another canine if the pack is either highlands or Asia.

Asia has some great choices like:
If animal also fits highlands theme as well as Asia I will give this symbol * and this color text.
Most wanted (my most wanted) label with red bolded text and the words Most Wanted.

Golden Jackal Most Wanted (Most wanted but probably unlikely because not much requested. It's also not a highland animal if that's the pack's theme. There's no coyote/jackal niche canid in the game and I really need either a jackal species or the coyote or both would be absolutely amazing but I'm just hoping for one or the other at this point and coyotes don't fit with neither an Asian theme nor a highlands theme, but golden jackals are in Asia.)

Mainland Raccoon Dog or Tanuki Most Wanted (probably more likely both lumped together as the same species if included. Slightly better chance as they are on the wishlist and they are a very unique-looking canid, especially compared to the other canids in the game. Would fill the "odd-ball" canid niche. They aren't found in highlands though.)

Indian Wolf Most Wanted (Yes, I know it's another wolf but it's pretty distinctive looking and it fills a different niche being from desert/middle eastern region instead of from temperate or tundra regions in North America or Europe like the Timber Wolf and Arctic Wolf. Also not a highlands animal.)
View attachment 402970

Corsac Fox (Another fox isn't high up on my wishlist but he is a pretty guy, and I'd take any canid at this point. Plus he fits in with the Chinese theme going on in the pack's key art as they range a small amount into China. His page on Canids.org says they specifically avoid mountainous areas though, so wouldn't fit a highlands pack.)

Tibetan Fox* (Honestly, the most likely of any of these canids to make it. It fits a Tibetan and/or Himalayan theme perfectly that seems be going on with the most of the revealed animal picks and the scenery on the key art. It also lives in "upland plains and hills" which could fit a highlands theme. Also we already got the weird-looking meme cat, Pallas Cat, so now we need the weird-looking meme dog, Tibetan Fox.)
View attachment 402973

Blanford's Fox* (Live in mountainous regions in the Middle East so would fit within the same theme as the Hamadryas baboons. Another strong contender for the pack if it's Asian highland-themed but if we have to have another fox as the next canid, I'd still personally prefer the Tibetan Fox for its more distinctive look.)
View attachment 402976

Ruppell's Fox* (lives in "mountains in the Sahara Desert. Ahaggar mountains of Algeria." It also ranges in the Middle East in the countries of Saudi Arabia and Iran, so again would fit with the baboons in theme. Again not high on my wishlist, would rather have Tibetan fox if it has to be a fox.)
View attachment 402977

New Guinea Highland Wild Dog/ New Guinea Singing Dog* Most Wanted (I would be happy with them but I can see people rioting over it being just another dingo even now and it would make much more sense game wise to have something like a tree kangaroo for New Guinea to boost the game's roster for more animal diversity. Plus it's pretty easy to mod them off the dingo if I can manage to install ACSE without my game-crashing so I can use mods again. There's even a mod of them now, but it's sadly outdated and I believe it was made out of the wolf, not the dingo, possibly because the Australia pack hadn't been released at the time?)
View attachment 402978

Himalayan Wolf/Tibetan Wolf* Most Wanted (Asian/Tibetan/Himalayan theme? Check. Highlands theme? Lives in Himalayan mountains, so check. Cute fluffy golden good boi? Yes, he is. Who's a cute fluffy good boi? You are, yes you are.)

Lovely floofy foxes 🦊🦊🦊 you can never have too many! What about a bush dog? Tanuki or bush dog would be the star pick of any pack for me at this point.

Yeah, I’m in the uk, and I’ve never seen a muntjac in the zoo! In fields in the countryside, yes, and they are cute!
They actually do have muntjacs at Shepreth Wildlife Park, but that might be because it also functions as a local wildlife hospital, so maybe they held on to some hand-reared orphaned fawns or something.

They are so cute! I love seeing them around where I live. Tiiiiiiny deer, smol deer, teeny little vampire teefs

Ah yes the pest argument, my pet peeve :)
I used to not want species that were pests in my country as well. Until i learned that the blackbuck is a pest in some parts of my country so now i can't use that argument haha

and i guess i like beavers and always wanted them despite also being pests.

My main grip back then was against the wild boar but now that we got the peccary AND red river hog as well, i don't care anymore tbh :p

I mean if we dont include animals that are to someone, somewhere pest the roster would be rather small :D

Like i vividly remember our tour guide on a class trip to tuscany raging about how much he hates porcupines because they keep digging up his moms garden :D

I like bush dogs too but they don't really fit in either of the speculated themes of this pack: Asia or mountains/highlands since they live in South America and they live in low elevation habitats. Tropical, Wetland, or South America's packs would've been the perfect packs to include them in since they live in South America in tropical areas and often live near water.

Speaking if we get another pack after this one, I really hope the theme is New World and it has half North American and half South America animals.

My idea would be

New World Pack
1. Coyote (North American canid)
2. Bush Dog (South American canid)
3. Andean Bear (if they aren't in this pack. South American bear.)
4. American Black Bear (North American bear. Completes the bear family.)
5. Coatimundi (personal preference for White-nosed, but I'll take any species. South American raccoon family member.)
6. Ringtail (North American raccoon family member.)
7. Some sort of small monkey for the primate people (tamarin or marmoset, etc.) (My personal favorite is the Golden Lion Tamarin but I don't really use primates that much, so it doesn't really matter too much to me.)
8. WTE with macaws or some other colorful family of South American birds that are easy to recolor into multiple different species, so we have another butterfly scenario with 5 different species of bird for the bird people.

Ducks are in way more zoos than the markhor. Heck, they're in far more zoos than the baboon
I never said they aren’t popular, it’s just not going to be fun with only 1 duck/ waterfowl species, ducks in zoos are either the side line of a large aviary or a filler in a exhibit for more main attractions, like penguins, flamingos, ibis and many others.

If we got 5 species of ducks I’d be thrilled but just one isn’t appealing to be as much as a swan (I dont want another) or pelican since those can be kept alone.
