DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

- It is distinct from other elephants. It is 2-3 feet shorter than the Asian elephant. It has bigger ears, a longer tail, straighter tusks and is described as having a "baby face"
All differences that really dont matter to a lot of casual players.
we have multiple leopards and foxes and wolves
Thats not an accurate comparision though. The leopards we have are drastically different with colours, location, behaviors, etc. same goes for the foxes and wolves.

Again I haven't been on the forums in a while so I'm not aware of the language people have used towards the elephant so I'm not saying its okay to talk about it like that - but these points don't defend the its addition.

I think what's going on is that - at least in terms of the roster - we're all in a long term relationship with Frontier. And in those first few years, you start to pick up on your partner's weird quirks, but you look the other way or more attractive traits take focus:

"Okay, so five new animals per pack at a fourth of the price of the base game, a little steep, but hey look at all the cool new scenery and penguins too!"
"Huh, no waterfowl in a wetlands pack...eh, whatever, I love capybaras!!!"
"So PZ doesn't have flying birds even though there's a walkthrough aviary, okay, a little odd...but omg maned wolf and caracal!:love:"

But over time, you start to grapple with the fact those quirks are more like features, problematic traits they are either unwillingly or unable to change...
"Wow nice porcupine! That's...that's a lot of ungulates..."
"Cool, a swan! You really needed more hoofstock huh..."

And then, finally, one day, after addressing your concerns and having those conversations, and finally come to the realization they're who they've always were, you just kinda snap:

"YOU KNOW WHAT F#$%^ YOU AND YOUR LACK OF A COATI!!!! ANOTHER ELEPHANT???? HOW FREAKIN' HARD IS IT TO FOLLOW A WISHLIST WE'VE BEEN UPDATING DAILY SINCE 2021, YOU TEA-SIPPING, HOLLY JOLLY HOLIDAY, HOGWARTS SOUNDING DORKS!!!!"

Not saying I'm there, I'm holding judgement and thought Americas was alright, but...the longer this goes on, the more apparent the gaps in the line-up become.
And I thought i was upset about the coati...

The base game Indian elephant is under-sized, which means either the Bornean elephant is going to be unrealistically small too, or it's just gonna be the same size as the Indian elephant
- It has a strong conservation/education purpose befitting of the game's ethos
This point only seems to be relevant when its convenient. I've had lots of people tell me that conservation and education aren't important when I push against the carnivoran grain.
- It lives in a very different habitat to other elephants: thick rainforest. It is much shier and not domesticated or used for work, unlike other Asian elephants. For the Indian elephant you can build a temple or market or savannah or dry brush type habitat. For the Bornean you can go thick jungle, mixed with the macaque and maybe the babirusa.
And yet it has the aquatic biome tag, not very characteristic of "thick rainforest" IMO.
- They rep the Bornean rainforest, a large and essential (and underrepresented) virgin rainforest
We barely have any New Guinea fauna and that island has way more purchase in terms of candidate species.
- we haven't had another elephant since base game and this is the perfect one
The perfect one would've been African forest elephants, given they're a distinct species and pretty much do all the same things as the Bornean elephant while also being critically endangered.
People want another zebra, another giraffe... we have two flamingos,
Which are at least different species (also applies to foxes but I couldn't find a nice way to paraphrase it in the quote box)
we have multiple leopards... and wolves,
I didn't want 2 leopards and 3 wolves either, doesn't mean it's a good thing they're in PZ and certainly doesn't validate the lesson at play not being learned.
so many pigs and goats and antelope, we're getting a fourth deer...
You're using varied genera to justifiy a second subspecies for an in-game species. Not an equal comparison.
why must everyone jump on this horrible bandwagon. Using words like "rancid" is just so extremely hateful. This animal is nearly extinct, I feel so sad that such a vulnerable animal is being spoken about this way on a forum of animal lovers.
I can guarantee you that not a single Bornean elephant cares about how random people on the internet feel about a video game implementation of the subspecies. It's not that deep.

I’d rather get another rhino than another Asian elephant subspecies. They at least are visually distinct and are rather unique. I’d love the addition of the Sumatran Rhino, partly because I’ve seen them multiple times before, and how visually distinct they are from their mainland cousins.

The elephant hate is actually genuinely starting to upset me. I don't understand it :'(
Don't be upset! No one is bashing the real life cresture. I think we can all pretty much agree that elephants are some of the most beautiful, endearing and complex animals in this World. Is just a bad pick for the game at this late stage.

Like other guys said: no one asked for another elephant, even if irl lives in thick jungle You can already build that kind of hábitat for the indian elephant if You want in the game, and at a time when we don't know if anything else is coming so slots in general are very limited and feel much more finite now than ever and with so many other asian species with much more long requested claims still missing (pheasants, ducks, other types of carnivores, monkeys even more ungulates like the blackbuck, Muntjac, nilgai, gaur, anoa, etc) it does feel like a very wasted opportunity and unnecessary addition.

Also unrelated to the elephant conversation... Is it possible we could get a civet??? Is the dictonary prophecy still getting fulfill?

There are plenty of animals in the game that are not kept in captivity
Yes, and this is something that is commonly and routinely considered a negative by a lot of people, especially when we get a rare/nonexistent in captivity variation over a more common one (e.g. the wild water buffalo over the domestic water buffalo; the word 'domestic' obviously frightened Frontier but it's a far better pick than the wild one because it expands the realistic zoo roster).

But over all it comes down to the fact that nobody was asking for a new elephant:
People want another zebra, another giraffe, we have multiple leopards and foxes and wolves, we have two flamingos, so many pigs and goats and antelope, we're getting a fourth deer...
Bolded the important bit. People wanted these other clones, and still do.

Here's a thought. If someone says something upsets/disgusts/scares them, don't reply with a bunch of huge images of said animal.

We are indeed drifting off topic, so let's get back on please. And do not make light of people who have genuine phobias of creatures, it's not as though they choose to have it. The clue is in the name.
This is sooo wrong, there are phobias of every single type, I have a phobia of deep water and catfish, so people can’t post fotos and talk about deep water and catfish anymore now? Bit extreme

I’m excited for the monkey, and very excited for the deer ❤️, but I still can’t help but feel disappointed by what we aren’t getting.

Man, I love how we are at the point we get to have our third elephant (one not common in captivity) before I ever, EVER seem to get a duck. Seeing as to what the leak was, it only makes it even more sad. I’ve been visiting some zoos more recently, and I’ll be honest I’m not dying for another elephant. Want to know what we don’t have in game? An animal I see in almost every zoo? Ducks, waterfowl, geese, swans, screamers.

Obviously I’m not saying every DLC has to go my way, but getting the Swan two years ago followed by nothing is such a disappointment. I was really hoping making the Waterfowl Winners Club would show at least something in terms of interest, not to mention the general public and children do love waterfowl. They are common in kids areas, as well as some of my favorite habitats like tropical houses.

Obviously for us bird people we still could get a pheasant, and maybe the crane? But above all the other birds I need waterfowl. “Can’t you mod them into the game?” You can mod anything at this point including flying birds and fish, if Frontier is trying to fill in packs I don’t see why birds can continued to be left in the state that they are while we get multiples of other animals.

Either way, I’m still looking forward to the announcement and I would be more than happy to eat my words if need be. Also the Peere David’s deer my beloved ❤️
@RightWhale...what have you done...

"commences at 24th june" I can find in that code
Isn't that when everyone was assuming the release date for the pack would be
I think this might be the first genuine leak since the one that happened by Frontier themselves with the Aquatic Pack + sun bear
There was one in zookeepers with the dictionary which frontier ended up doing the streisand effect to.

They don't have the aquatic biome tag, and it doesn't seem like they'll be updated to match the Bornean elephant
yes they do both elephants have the aquatic tag they just arent in the leak or challenge.
I just can't wrap my head around the thought process behind the elephant. People who want a diverse species selection aren't going to be happy. Casual players who might barely care about the difference between our two existing elephant species aren't going to be happy. People who want common zoo animals aren't going to be happy - look at this!

The Asiatic lion would have been a better pick by just about every metric, and I don't even actually want that one either! This is the most genuinely baffling roster decision they've made in years. At least with the arguably similar African leopard, there was an appreciable level of demand and I could understand the appeal even if it didn't work for me. This elephant is just for basically no one.
even worse according to the metawishlist it got a single vote it truley is the worst possible pick they could of possibly made. Casual players wont be able to tell the difference between the elephants, people who care about diversity don't want more subspecies, people who care about realism already have the most common and the likelihood that they are neighbouring one of the 5 zoos that have borneo elephants is low and on top of all that its literally got documented proof of essentially no one wanting it.

Hm. Were aquatic tags for indian rhino and base game elephants added later down the line? Would explain why every other species with aquatic tag is present, but not these 3.
aquatic tags the concept were added fairly late I do however think that elephants got them the same time as the tapir.
My guess:
June 24 announcement, 25 on Frontier Unlocked they will show all species (Barnyard did so I think) and 30 will be dlc 🥲
No chance given the leak says the challenge will be over by then

It really is so odd that they posted that key art and just let the Planet Zoo twitter sit for 2+ weeks. They didn't repost the art and didn't even share any of the JWE3 or PC2 announcements.

I'm not mad. It's whatever... I'm just legitimately perplexed.
It really has been radio silence for no reason
You know, the pack being Asia in general technically puts a tree kangaroo back on the table, but neither of the two that anyone actually wants.
None of the tree kangaroo are asian? and even if you go by political boundaries instead of biogeographic the goodfellows and matschies are both from new guinea which is considered asian
Grizzled tree kangaroo, for one.
they dont none get even remotely close to sulawesi which is where the wallace line is even looking at the most eastern asian oceanian boundary line the lydekker line no tree kangaroo cross this line though the grizzled gets close
I think a mallard in barnyard would be weird because they are a wild species
The species is wild but it does contain the domestic duck subspecies so it does fit the theme and would be more overall useable than just the domestic duck. It would be like adding the european rabbit the species as a whole isnt domestic but contains all domestic breeds of rabbit.

Oh right. Then a second ungulate.
whats the first? all we know is deer, macaque, ratel and elephant
The elephant hate is actually genuinely starting to upset me. I don't understand it :'(
No one hates elephants its just that the elephant is objectively as useless of a pick as possible. Elephants are one of my favourite animals but in a selection of 7 animals from asia designed to support and build a healthy zoo game they honestly could not have picked a worse animal if they tried. It does nothing for the game functionality or realism wise.
It's about as close to an objectively bad pick as we can get.
You know things are bad when we agree something is a bad pick
Strange they're excluded from the challenge. Maybe the Bornean elephants are included because Frontier's gonna give them deep diving? Who knows.
They also missed the indian rhino.

Edit: after a proper check they missed the indian rhino, indian elephant and african savannah elephant.

I'm going to bring a point, all of you guys who are saying you wont buy this DLC will 100% be waiting at launch personally and I'll watch you guys post on that thread saying how much you love this pack.

Never said i won't buy the DLC. It has 3 species i want. I'm expresing my dissatisfaction with being charged for an animal that is completly superfleous to the game. Is nice that some people Will enjoy it at least.

Only packs i didn't Buy at launch were barnyards and ZK's. One because i hated the theme and had no rush nor interest to get any of those animals and the other one because none of the animals in the pack excite me enough to inmediatly wanting them (plus for me it had a lot of quality issues in some of the key species and I was pretty ed about that sifaka if I'm being 100% honest).

End result i guess will depend on the rest of the roster. If junglefowl or green peafowl are the birds that are in store for us and the other two are the sumatran tiger and the raccoon dog the yeah i would probably not buy at launch this one either and wait for a good discount like i did with Barnyard's and ZKs. Is a way i as a customer i can get the stuff and still show with my honey that those packs are not worth the price they are selling them for with the animal choices they make (for me).
