Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

So you would continue to recommend it if Steam's cut was 75%? It seems logic has failed.

Try reading it again, as you failed to understand what was written.

Because of the community (the attitude of folks in this thread) he will not recommend the game.
Nothing to do with Steam. He was going to write a review, until he seen this thread.

The game, he can recommend.
The community, he cannot.

Maybe we should have you on retainer to parse and punctuate his posts- they make my face hurt, too.

Even though i have many games on steam, i am playing elite dangerous quite happily without it.. i simply do not need ED to be sat inside my steam client. Why on earth would I? So thats how i'm going to keep it.

Yep, my feelings exactly.

I was and remain completely bemused by the demand for Steam Keys, which I feel had nothing to do with the activity of playing the game. I can see no reason for me to get such a key as time not spent being bombard by 'hot sale items', is time I can spend trading rares.

I felt, and still feel, the whole thing to be a steam in a tea-cup... [/puns]

Box ticking is hard.

I'll spend my time when I'm not in ED earning free ship skins on steam and giving frontier more money. We all have different priorities i guess.

yes i do if FD was soooo worried about that 30% they would have not got in to bed with steam they would have not gave use keys but yall dont talk about that man i feel as if im on the sto forums over analyzing everything

Daan2006?

speaking of reviews im not going to recommend this game on steam just because of this thread and how alot are up in arms over a 30% cut before this thread i would have gladly recommend this game even bought it for my long time friend but not any more

That is just sheer idiocy.

For new steam users, maybe...

Older users have ways of making money with the marketplace and use that money to buy skins and support Fdev without touching their bank accounts.

I did my homework, thanks. Fanbois have pumped up the Steam review to the point that it is outright fiction, YouTube videos are not made with a portrayal of a poor or unfinished product. Consumers are notoriously biased as either drastically vapid fanbois or purely negative. Nary a review site exists at this point that isn't flagrantly bribed---virtually all of them gush over titles who have obviously paid for a good review or panned it based on a lack of kickback. Because of this any homework done still carries a significant risk.

There is no reason I should have to review a video game product to a degree greater than a new car purchase in order to determine whether or not they are charging full finished price for an unfinished product anyway. It's been a bane in this industry for two decades at this point and still happens. The fact that anyone believes you SHOULD have to do such a thing just underscores how brainwashed the masses have become to this accepting this practice.

It's not finished, threads like this back that up---even those desperate to "support the developers" do so because they are worrying about developer dollars because they want them to finish the thing. Early Access is the Steam category for knowingly purchasing unfinished games. It's existence is intended to display an honest representation of what you are purchasing WITHOUT doing an idiotic amount of research just to determine if a developer bothered to finish their product or not before release. It's where this should have been placed when it went on there.

But all of this is ok, and you are absolutely right---I did carry the risk all on my own, accepted it and own it. But I'm not going to blow sunshine and rainbows up anybodies tailpipe. I took the risk and wound up with less than I'd hoped for, and believe that though an option existed to be up front with me, through a certain level of dishonesty it was not taken. As such, I'm entirely unconcerned about an commissions incurred over the course of attempting to market a product.

No they haven't pumped up the review scores. The game has sat at 79% positive since release on Steam and only jumped up to 80% positive in the last couple of days.
If you honestly believe that all review sites are bought and paid for then the onus is on you to watch and read stuff so you can see what's what and do some basic deduction, surely?

It was never claimed to be finished. Part of the on-going dialogue from Frontier is about all the stuff they want to add to the game to fill it out post-release. Braben said in a video or an interview prior to release "We've built the walls and roof of the house and now we need to work on the internals."

Can anyone who has linked their accounts tell me if there is *any* benefit to doing so? Does it keep the game up to date for you? Or does it just launch the launcher?

It starts the launcher, it provides access to your Steam Wallet funds / Payment Methods for ease of use, you can write reviews and share screenshots with other Steam Users.

If none of the above interests you, then don't do it.
I buy and sell on Steam, I use all of Steams features.
So it suits me.

I'll agree that it's unfortunate that steam takes a cut of everything, but I'd still link my key if I hadn't done so already.
My main reason for linking was to 'advertise' to my steam friends what I'm playing in hopes that some might actually come on board.
There have been a few times where i've seen the "Joe is now playing 'X'" popup message from steam, and it has gotten me to go check out the game they were playing. I'm now hoping that the reverse happens.

Tiny convenience things that are nice, but definitely not worth giving steam that big a cut from future stuff bought on the store.elitedangerous.com in my opinion, so wondering how I can unlink, doesn't seem to be a way to :(
I read the initial post as them only getting a cut from steam.elitedangerous.com so yeah..

I supported Frontier by paying several hundred pounds for my copy. I'm perfectly comfortable taking advantage of a Steam key, thanks.

You unfeeling fiend, how dare you! You're no better than Hitler. Or something. I forget.

(Yes, so did a lot of people, a point that the simplistic, sanctimonious and frequently bewildered moaning fails to address. Shades of grey, man, they're ain't real, I tells ya... "If you're not with us, you're against us" and so forth.)

How exactly?

The hardcore "Fanboys" presumably bought the game before it was released on Steam and therefore haven't been able to review it to begin with until the keys was released just now. And even now many of these hardcore "fanboys" haven't even claimed the key since they want to make sure that FD gets as much money as possible without Steam taking a cut.

The reviews on Steam have been stable at 78% for pretty much the entire time it's been on there and those reviews was by new players. Since the keys was released the review have gone up by a wooping 2%...

Maybe people in general just don't agree with you... ;)

You leave them Steam defenders alone.
They have every right to demand that people don't need to hear all the facts and that there's nothing wrong with Valve's double-dipping fantasies.
