Do "purple-haired heroes" scare everyone into Solo?

So, I'm going to answer my own question, seeing that I've been hauling all night in Solo. Why?

Well first, I AM scared to do this in Open. I barely was able to buy a T9 that's just borderline capable of running cargo for the CG. The only thing engineered is the FSD, and most modules are D rated (even the FSD is only C rated at this time), so there is absolutely no doubt I'd die many horrible deaths in Open that would wipe out my remaining small credit balance. For me to play in Open right now would be foolhardy.

The other reason is that once I switch to "hauling cargo" mode, all the PvP nonsense happening at the CG completely breaks my immersion. This isn't just an Elite problem, I often encounter this in many MMOs. However, I don't feel this way when playing in a private group like Mobius, since CMDRs in PG also tend to lean more towards roleplay rather than Fortnite-like play. I know, it's odd considering all my contributions to this thread talking about benefits of playing in Open, but now I find myself longing for a meaningful PG like Mobius for times like these.

That's not to say I'm quitting Open, far from it! I just find that while CGs are great in Open when I'm in the mood for PvP, they really are a terrible place to be when I'm not. This is very different than a chance encounter with another player in some random system in the Bubble. If I'm running missions or exploring random sectors of the Bubble, I welcome the chance encounter with another player, even if they do turn out to be "hostile". That's very different than running a gauntlet of two dozen purple-haired heroes in an overloaded and glitchy instance in a ship that can just barely survive PvE, let alone Elite PvP players.

And on that note, I think this thread has reached its conclusion for me. Now where did I put that link to the Mobius form, or should I be using Fleetcom instead?

Nearly 6 months of playing and I'm still yet to meet a griefer.. Just set out from Sol on a long trip out exploring, so I guess I've left them behind for now..

Oh, and just as an aside, I have purple hair - both in game and real life..

Else you'd have to explain to me how an improved scanning module or FSD is primarily about combat.

Maybe not primarily about combat, but both have combat implications, and the FSD's are quite significant.

Before all these jump range inflating mechanisms, logistics was a far more important combat concern. Even fairly dedicated PvPers made concessions to be able to move their vehicles around...and those of us with more patience, or more foresight, were often able to field superior combat vessels on shorter notice.

Indeed, I consider this jump range inflation as detrimental to the combat game as it is to the apparent scale of the galaxy.

Scanners are more of a stretch, but I have been in situations where knowing what materials a planet had did make a difference in the combat readiness and endurance of my vessel, especially on those rare long range journeys that did involve the threat of other CMDRs.

We can objectively say, that player ships can be a multitude stronger than the regular NPC ships are. This is what Morbad and me pointed out.

All I did there was designate targets and try to avoid getting my GU-97 shot down while my NPC crew smashed a four ship wing assassination mission target by herself.

Research who MothaTrucker is using both in game and out of game resources. Who do they know? What are their affiliations? You can ask them on comms. Up to you if you believe them or not. Shooting first and asking questions later is also a valid tactic - it let's them know you mean business, for starters.
This is pretty much what I did the other day. Saw the same guy in the same harmless T6 flying back and forth through the system a few times. Gave his name a quick search on inara. Checked out his modules. Flung him a friendly message asking if there was a good trade loop or something, he didn't speak english (at least I think that's what "kein englisch" means)
Decided that some harmless guy flying a T6 that hasn't even removed the default pulse lasers to save weight is unlikely to cause any problems, so I left him alone. It's not like he's gonna oppose me in a war.

Its almost as if being able to choose whichever mode you like at the time is great.

I wouldn't worry about it either way since the PVP'ers do all their grinding for credits, mats and stuff in solo anyway.

See, my point is, this is exactly the problem. People can get away with paper planes in solo way more often, than in open. Although you would probably die to a high ranked NPC, if it would and could interdict you.

I agree with you here, I'd wish PvP was more meaningful. I sort of was, when credits were hard to earn. I is bad that we have to choose between challenging, but somewhat stupid game play, and immersive, but care-baer-level game play.

But ship loadout is entirely your choice. You have to accept, that a T9 is out of your price range. It is like buying an expensive race car and only having money left for slicks. As soon as it starts to rain, you are setting your precious car at a very high risk - unnecessarily, because you could have gone with a cheaper, but properly equipped vehicle.

BTW @Ziggy Stardust, my new T-9 is SHIELDLESS :D
You are not the only one with a ship like that. There were a number of T-9 in open yesterday, woefully underequipped against the purple-haired imbeciles.

There are plenty of other ships you can buy and outfit on a tighter budget than a T9, whilst still having money left over for juicy rebuys.

I reckon you could make a shieldless T9 in Solo and a well-engineered cargo ship in Open and have them both offer the same level of challenge averaged over time. So the first one wouldn't be "carebear-level"; in fact you could argue that it priorities actual flying skill more, especially when docking and undocking.

Define 'get away with' in a computer game that I play for fun? Do you mean re-logging at mat sites and guardian etc? I don't do that, that's grinding. I cant wait for the day fdev undo all of those gains as it is recognised already as an exploit officially.

Who is holding a gun to your head and forcingyou to play Elite at all? Please tell me, I'm sure it will be illegal wherever you live and it can be stopped. You will be freed to play any game you choose and not forced to play one against your will.

But ship loadout is entirely your choice.

Thankyou, yes it is. As are a lot of things. In fact now I think about it, everything in my life is my choice isnt it? What in my life is your or anybody elses choice please? I'll give you clue, its not whether I play with you at all in Open or whether I block you, thats not your choice. Your choice is whether you do the same, do you see the difference?

See, this is exactly YOUR problem. Is a typical tractor trailer a "paper airplane"? No, it is not, and the game as designed seems to recognize this. You expect everyone to be driving armored vehicles in order to deliver TVs to Walmart, and that's not the game we have UNLESS one opts to play in Open at a CG or ShinDez, etc. Solo is not what is broken, Open is.

There are plenty of other ships you can buy and outfit on a tighter budget than a T9, whilst still having money left over for juicy rebuys.
And this is the attitude many people rebuff - you want me to play the game for YOUR entertainment rather than my own. FWIW, I actually do that quite a bit. Why else do you think I fly a Hauler around in SC at the CG? Unfortunately I need to take a break from that because even the tiny rebuy of the Hauler is starting to diminish my already low credit balance. Don't worry, me and my Hauler will be back someday, just for you :D

ps - the Malcolm Reynolds in me enjoys buying a ship that costs me every last penny and then needs to earn its keep to pay the bills. You PvPers say the soloists play it too safe, yet you hide behind your fortune and wealth and prismatic shields preying on the weak. It's you who play it too safe! Give your credits to the poor and PvP in a Hauler, then you'll have something to brag about ;)

Despite my current preference to do this CG in Solo or PG, I would be totally "open" (pun incoming) for Open-only CGs. Most of my gameplay in ESO was PvE, but I don't begrudge the PvP players for having Cyrodiil.

So you mean, we dont specially need to engineer our shields and hulls to god mode levels so we could actually crash our spaceships while trying to land on high G worlds or boosting out of the mail slot?

Damn, that almost sounds like a space sim game what you describe. Way too hardcore for the high wake meta open-only crowd IMO.

BTW, you know how sailors get "initiated" when crossing the equator? That happened to me last night. I may be naming, but I'm not shaming! I see this as a "rite of passage", an honor really, something worthy to celebrate. I have now truly arrived on the PC platform! Seriously, I think it's cool :D
