ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Much as I respect anyones right to spend their money any way they choose , I cant see the reasoning to spend all that cash on a DK2 when it is clearly an unfinsihsed bit of kit. Once it has hi res screens that are pixel perfect in every way I just dont get it.

If you can afford to buy these toys just to see what the future might bring then fine, good on you. The rest of us will probably wait until it actually offers what it should, eventually.

Could you please make it clear whether you've given the DK2 a try.

I tried Kerrash's DK1 last year, and I knew I wanted one then. I didn't sign up for the DK2 immediately. I didn't want to get in the way of developers getting their kit, and I was also scared that my technical ignorance would make the headset too difficult to set up.

I ordered mine after I'd heard that thousands of the things had been sold. Anyone actually writing a game for it will get theirs before mine, and there was a massive community out there that I could ask for help if I got stuck.

The video resolution is less of a concern for us old crinklies. I'm used to playing retro games that have similarly huge pixels.

Once you have the dk2 there is no going back.
It actually seems pointless to play with a monitor now.

Ok the DK2 is great, but resolution still sucks, it needs a split 4k screen IMO. Right now its using the 1920-1080 screen from the galaxy Note 3 (so roughly 1x1k per eye) . Even if the consumer version has the 2560x1440 screen from the yet unreleased note 4, its still gonna have the "screen door effect". I believe it needs minimum 2k vertical pixels for full immersion.
From that perspective, playing on a 28" 4k moniotor isnt all that shabby ;-)

Got my DK2 today. After a bit of trial and error I managed to get ED working. Also downloaded the Titans of Space demo and HL2 from Steam.

DK2 is my first experience, of any kind, in virtual reality. Whilst the resolution is something that needs some work on (and I am sure they will), quite frankly, it blew me away. The sense of scale and depth is phenomenal.

Its actually quite frightening that this is a beta game on a piece of hardware still in development. Even now, its by far the most immersive experience I have had in gaming. Imagine a year or two down the line??

Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying the DK2 is the end point....its the start point and I agree with everything you're saying.

But regular monitors for Elite from now on? No thank you, sir! :)

You should try the Cyberspace DK2 demo. It will make you realize just how powerful and immersive VR is. I just wish the DK2 came standard with surround sound headphones.

Thanks. Will download tomorrow. Virtual reality really is a game changer. I now understand why everyone has been so excited about it.

Ok, I need some insight.

I have the DK2, I can now get it to work every time.... But I have a problem.

I have an odd version of colorblindness. When I am wearing the Oculus, every horizontal line is split. There is a row of red pixels on top and a row of green pixels just below it.

This is for everything. All text, ships, I do not really see any solid horizontal lines. Does anyone else have this issue with theirs?

I tried to use it in Elite this evening and couldn't test for more than half an hour before getting that old familiar feeling of nausea.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm not literally just ripping the oculus, my hmz is not practical too, it's the whole "VR" thing of wearing something on your head which excludes the rest of the world it just doesn't really work 100% and i don't think the answer is in design solutions, it probably will never catch on coz it's just easier to play a game on your monitor simple as that really.

Wow, Just wow!.. Reading through this thread and your "contributions" to it has astounded me, to think you have a right to comment on VR based solely on your experience using Sony's glorified head mounted 3dtv is laughable. While not everyone is going to appreciate or enjoy VR and their opinions and thoughts are valid and relevant, you simply come across as ignorant, cocky and obnoxious. Please don't presume to speak for the greater gaming community, you are only one voice and apparently you don't even have the credentials(DK2 XP) to be making the claims and assumptions your trumpeting in the first place.

Oh... and by the way...

I played ED for the first time last night completely in VR(DK2) with a Thrustmaster T.16000m for what I assumed was 30-40 minutes and turned out to be just over 3.5hrs straight. The single most amazing gaming experience of my life(gaming for over 25 years). Elite took me by surprise completely.

is that not a little like saying do not buy a 5 inch b/w tv in the 1940s because you want to wait for full colour HD?

Not really. Color TV did not come into general use until the 1960s, when NBC made a big deal about "IN COLOR!" For the Oculus aren't we talking about maybe a year to commercial units, rather than decades? It's more like someone spending thousands of dollars to buy a color TV a year before they could get one for 500.
You can't be bothered by the time it takes to setup a VR/headphone/HOTAS when you are about to start a 12 hour game session? wow. Just wow

Sorry I couldn't resist :)

How so? I regulary smoke whilst flying in ED wearing the rift...
Well most people don't want the smoke seeping into their walls/carpet, so they don't smoke indoors. If you're in an apartment I guess it's not as big a deal unless you're going to lose a security deposit or something.

The other, larger issue, is that cigarette smoke will damage your computer's hardware over time if any of the intake fans suck it up.

Just for the record I can play in the Rift for hours on end with no discomfort. Now playing other games (Half-life 2) Make me sick within about 30-40 minutes and I'm done for the night after that. Sure the text is a bit unreadable but it become VERY clear if you just lean in a bit (To get closer). I'm glad I bought the Rift and I simply CANNOT go back to using my monitor.

Pro tip: Get a Good HOTAS setup (X-52 Pro :D) so you don't have to play with a keyboard (You can't see your hands so you'll be guessing what button your pressing- jettison all cargo for example:eek:)

I think the op has valid points.

There are a lot of accessability issues that I can see additionally the op is making a point about VR and not I think the DK2 the fact that he prefers Sonys offering is his choice.

Sitting in the middle of a mass of wires and sticks is pretty anti social for people you live with for a start.

The OP is talking **** and hasn't even tried the DK2 so is unable to compare it to his lousy Sony effort (I tried the sony and it's rubbish). Yes, sitting in a gaming rig is anti social to the other people in the house, as is reading a book.

Honestly, the anti-VR arguments are so ridiculous, it's not true!

Just tossing my name into the hat of individuals (im)patiently awaiting the next release, hoping (praying) it will be compiled against the latest OR sdk.

Despite a constant v-sync'd 75 fps, the judder caused by 'fallback' headtracking is making the game near unplayable for me with a rift.

I'm planning to submit a ticket with the issue, if only to bring more attention to the issue. Has anyone heard any rumors as to the next release date?

Sorry to the EU/UK guys still waiting but I am onto my second dev kit2 and probably delaying one of you guys by a bit. I reported a faulty cable when I first got mine (over a month ago) and I just received shipping notice for a replacement.

I'm one of the EU/UK guys on the waiting list but pleased to hear your news. Obviously would have been best for it to work right first time, but once it's happened sounds like they made a best efforts to fix. Under those circumstances I'm happy to wait :D. Also hopefully they will use your experience/feedback to improve CV1.

anyone having an issue where f12 does not reset the dk2's position? it seems that in intensive combat, the rift loses it's positioning very quickly.
With DK2 if you lose positional tracking (for example if you cover up the camera) you also lose F12. I did report this beginning of the month with my SSE 4.1 bug report.
I wonder if FD upgrades to Oculus SDK 0.4.1 for Beta 2? I hope so, but my bug report is not switched to fixed yet... If FD gets at least f12 working I can play more again...
