I’m actually nervous of the idea of an OR not because the wife or kids would laugh at me, but because they might take advantage of the fact I can’t see anything to quickly swap the mouse for a bowl of custard or something else devious.

Thats probably exactly what would happen to me.

That video looks awesome.

I have an Oculus Rift dev kit but have to wait until the Beta to try it out in Elite. It's a difficult wait after watching that video.

I think cockpit games are perfectly suited to the Rift. I use the Rift for a racing sim - iRacing - and it works great.

I think Elite is especially suited to it because of mature design decisions such as keeping the pilots head firmly on his shoulders at all times! I've tried war-thunder with the rift and you get creamed by other players using external views and snappy target head-locking. With Elite its your head and up to you to learn to point it in the right direction.

Also the work they've done on the UI elements (the targeting reticle responds to your head position, the changes to the target distance font), the 3D and the light bloom effects which I believe are thrown inside the cockpit, and the sun which glares and flickers in one eye. I need a sun shade on my sidewinder!

They are setting a gold standard for VR support in my book.

take a picture of your face (look angry, as though you are about to snap) and stick it on the front of your rift.

problem solved.

Sulking again now. :D

I'd love to get a dev kit 1 now - soooo tempting, but the real thing should be out at the end of the year (hopefully).

If we can wait this long for an Elite re-boot, we can wait a few months for the consumer Rift.

Hey, perhaps FD should talk to Oculus and do a "Rift + E: D" bundle deal for the headset's launch!

Seriously.

+1 iRacing is seeing me through this long wait for ED very nicely :)

+1

I was thinking eactly the same. Its clearly a perfect match so why not promote each other?

Aren't they pushing Eve Valk-ie-wotsit as the killer app designed especially for the rift?

Not many people have played that, and honestly I doubt its as far along as E:D is even on the combat side.

EDIT: Also the trailer for that game looks remarkably more exciting than the actual game footage which is a bit..meh..s'ok

They are yes. However EVR is going to be a standalone shoot em up sim, with the intention of maybe modding it into the other game elements at a later stage (CCP sounded quite noncommital like they have enough on their plate getting their latest build to work properly)

On the other hand ED as we know is all cockpit based (for now), fully open world sandbox space game and whats more, DB is a big fan so I imagine the OR will be supported better in this game than most other OR launch titles.

There are some golden times ahead for us mate...:D

I am totally getting OR on release, one of my mates thinks it's a gimmicky fad, personally I think it is a niche product for niche games, and I'm totally fine wit that. One thing though, the HUD initially seems very far away!

Be sure to give your mate a go! The proof is in the pudding after all.

As for niche they have already shipped a ton of dev kits to other industries besides gaming. Architectural, Medical, Tourism (NASA have a tour of the ISS on the OR already or example) and training purposes (like fire, police and military)

Everyone Ive demoed my rift to, has instantly saw what all the fuss is about and are chalked down for a consumer kit. Even my Dad is rocking an OR playing WarThunder and loving it, and he thinks gaming in general is a complete waste of time :)

what do you mean far away? Most of the footage people upload shows the peripheral which is displayed convexly around the lens. So you see the floor at the bottom of the image etc. but when you are wearing the headset it looks normal but you can look down with your eyeballs and see the floor. This is why I tried to crop that out in the footage I uploaded, but you might notice the image is still curved.

Please keep in mind that recent updates on the Rift/VR front seem to suggest that PCs will have to be capable of rendering at a solid 95fps (instead of the previous 60fps) for the best experience - this will have a significant impact on the power of PC required if it comes to pass. If they manage to get a better than 1080p panel in there too (there's talk of 1440p being a possibility) this will only add to the requirements.

I'm deliberately sticking with my current PC until the final specs/requirements are set in stone.

This is pretty good advice, and is exactly what I'm doing at the moment.

Although I also *really* want to join the Alpha, but that would mean a new PC now.... Arrrgh!

I haven't tried any of these things yet so this is total speculation on my part but I'm thinking wearing the Occulus Rift would get sweaty and uncomfortable after a while. I think it'll be great for a little while then get old. Seems to me the TrackIR would be a more comfortable option while still providing free look using natural head movements. If anyone has tried both I'd be curious what their opinion is.
