Interesting to listen on what they think on ED. Sounds like at least 2 more will be buying ED.

Nice find there Rog. :D

This was a very enjoyable listen, and I'm really starting to feel vindicated for pushing hard for Oculus Rift support back in the day. Loving how space sims seem to be the perfect fit for Oculus Rift, and Elite almost seems like it may be the best fit among space-sims. It captures the spirit of looking at the stars, wishing you could fly out and see what's there, and then realising you actually can.

I still haven't tried the damn thing though...

I could be bribed to take a trip up to Cambridge with the Rift one of these sunny weekends...;)

I quite liked that, am starting now from EP1.

Makes a change from old total biscuit videos for running in the background when i am working.

thanks.

PS Rog are you involved in it or was the "we swear a lot" a cut and paste from their site?

Not involved, just chanced across it and found it agreeable. The E: D + O.R content made it a mandatory post here.

Thought I'd better post their 'warning' too in case anybody listened at work/around kids or were of a particularly sensitive disposition. :D

On Tuesday March 18th:
Sony will reveal its Oculus Rift-beating VR headset at GDC next week, according to developers familiar with the tech.
...we’re already seeing thrilling games emerge. Frontier’s Elite: Dangerous and CCP’s Eve Valkyrie are among the more spectacular examples...

Edge online article HERE.

It'll be annoying if Sony has a significantly better VR headset, but ties it to the PS4, which no doubt lacks some of the grunt required for really high-end VR experiences.

That would be really annoying because that would mean they COULD have made a good VR headset all along and just have been lazy about it.

This is what is scary when viewed with history (90s) in context is that Sony releases something that is not necessarily bad techs but that is does not have proper hardware (i.e. PS4) to push it properly.

A bad implementation, especially one where latency is inadequate, would really turn off a large population of possible PS4 users by providing a mediocre to bad experience that would then likely trickle down to the PC users.

I'm really curious as to how the Sony can be better than the (consumer) Rift when the PS4 is relatively weak (compared to a high end PC). Something has to give - resolution, game detail, refresh rate... I don't know what. :S Not long until we find out though I guess. I'm still not getting a PS4 though - it's got nothing on it I want to play.

Still interesting there are so many references to nausea, and people feeling odd after a long use.

I really hope they can get this nailed.

They seem to be confident they have got this sorted, are they going to be at the GDC?

Well, its essentially a simple enough piece of kit for surface details which is no deep mystery, but Im sure there's lots of R&D that OR have kept under their hats. Sony will still have to do their own devving!

However it helps OR if Sony's VR kit is recieved well and is pretty decent, as it only goes to validate further the market for this new tech.

The achillies heal for Sony is that their VR kit is tied to the PS4's hardware which is already barely as good as a reasonably decent pc set up, and will surely soon fall behind the OR driven pc hardware development in the years to come, not least in the SteamBox which I imagine will be marketed as the release date VR setup to run it on.

I've been trying to decide if I really should get one of these or a new graphics card? So if I was to get a rift how long would it take to get to me?

Something to keep in mind. The rift is not a graphic card. If anything, it will require a reasonably well performing card to operate properly. So, if you are wondering between a card or the rift, and being on a budget, I'd failsafe to a card as there would be nothing more frustrating than to get the rift and being unable to use it due to poor performing graphic hardware.
