ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

A GTX750 is quite underpowered for OR playing. For a fluid experience you'll have to go for something more powerful.

Regarding ATI(AMD) vs nVidia tbqh I've had cards from both manufacturers (and sis, intel, Matrox, ...) and never had much issues with drivers, although I always had a single card. AFAIK ED had issues with older (non GCN) ATI cards.

OR requirements should be similar to passive 3D, so the card RAM should be a concern.

Thanks for the link to the Twitch video. Unfortunately Twitch has such poor compression that the video looks quite bad on the Rift.

It would be really awesome if you could upload your video to YouTube ZeeWolf and send me the link via PM. Would be so great to see it. :)

If Oculus only wanted games developers to buy DK2, then I think they would put vetting procedures in place to ensure that only developers can buy the DK.
Sure, they want developers to buy it for game-integration purposes (that's vital), but they'll also want early adopters to act as evangelists to the wider world.
When pre-ordering, it's necessary to tick a box to agreed that you understand that this is not a finished consumer product, which legally protects Oculus from irate purchasers who think they (mistakenly) understand otherwise.
And besides, as an Alpha tester, I am a game developer of a sort :)
PS - As an evangelist, I think it's the future of gaming, and the best thing since sliced bread, possibly better :D

They've expicitely stated you shouldn't buy it unless you're developer, no ifs and buts about it. You don't have to respect their request, but there it is.

I saw that in a video as well. I thought that it was an odd thing to say. I mean what company on the planet would happily encourage people to not buy their products? The only reason I can think for the founder of the company to say this is that the retail version of the rift will not be too far behind the release of DK2.

Best way to sell someone something is tell everybody "It's only for special people this is not for just anybody."

It worked for Facebook and Apple it can work for them too, I'm sure!

Also, Hi!

Anyone else a bit worried about how there seem to be a lot of people around the Internet viewing VR as just another 'gimmick'?

Not "worried" at all. VR will be huge, I have no doubts whatsoever. Not just for gaming but for a whole panoply of uses as the technology advances. Most of the people who see it as a gimmick probably haven't tried it!

+1

I have demoed my DK1 to quite a few people already who were sceptical about its potential and saw it as a ' brick that I dont want to put on my head while I game thanks very much'. The only difference between all their first reactions was the speed at which they went ' oh wait a minute lads...this is g wicked!!'...usually follwed by ' so when is this coming out??'..then by the initial dissappointment when I say Im not sure yet but probably this year sometime perhaps by xmas which was then followed by the realisation that that just gives them time to save up the cash.

Seriously, I had a mate stay with me recently for a couple of months who is/was a hard core anti gamer, thought all gamers were sad losers who waste their time on these sorts of things and should get a life, who was so blown away by just the Titans of Space demo that he is now always the first to bring it up in pub conversations about how cool it is and if it wasnt for the recent arrival of his new kid would definitely be investing, his words.
He also plans to introduce it to his Architectural company as soon as the CV1 comes out.

Yeah, not worried at all - it's going to be *massive*. Remember how the Wii brought in non-gamers and helped 'normalise' the gamer image? VR's going to make *much* more of an impact, and in no way be confined to gaming.

The tech is here, and only getting better. CV1 is going to be amazing enough, so what the next 5-10 years will bring should be mind-blowing.

Some of the journo pieces you see are pretty weak, but you have to remember they have column inches to fill, and a bit of negative controversy is always good for click-bait and page views.

.
Remember how the wii-u brought about a near collapse in Nintendo existing as a standalone business. Extremely poor sales and little support. Trying to revolutionise gaming with a new way to view and play.

Apples and oranges. You can't compare OR with Wii-U.

Oh ye of little faith.

Rog compared with Wii, I compared with Wii-u. Both in themselves are irrelevant as to what will happen, it could be great could be disaster.

I have faith in VR, it's very appealing to me and I will be over spending on it.
