Cash is merely a tool, or more importantly often a barrier to tools, a not an end. Some like playing with buckets and shovels instead of digging with their hands. Others like finding the perfect bucket with the perfect handle and just want to try them all out. The rest for them is just padding.
Especially when there is nothing alongside that padding, E: D doesn't have an S42. It doesn't try to have a narrative pull. It just places you in the middle of things and hopes you'll care enough to keep digging.
indeed... like i said it is just my perspective. For me cash isnt a tool..... my ship is the tool, and the point of the game is my career, the journey from zero to..... well not hero, but zero to "elite" i guess.
i am sympathetic to those who just say "I just want to PvP and am not bothered about all the grind". The problem is, to reduce the grind for 1 person is to remove the game for me.
IF FD can come up with a way to keep both groups happy they are better (wo)men than I. IMO ultimately it is a problem with EDs marketing. It sells itsself as a different game to different people, and therefore there will always be this issue for the entire life of the game
using a car game analogy, you have some wanting to play burnout, and some wanting to play i-racing and some wanting to play F1 manager all on the same track. All 3 are great games in their own right but are mutually exclusive and CANT be played at the same time on the same track.
(or to use your bucket vs hands analogy... I too want to use a bucket and a spade.... but I want to EARN that bucket and spade and not have it given to me)
It is why i enjoyed the balance of the game at launch.... tho that said there was even back then a scalability issue.... once you got to the 5 million level of ships, unless you traded or exploited you hit a brick wall, so even i admit it needed a tweak from that point on.
but my issue it their tweak completely removed the "start game" so much so when i did a mini wipe 12 months ago, it took me all of 2 play sessions to be back in an asp.
