Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

Realize this is a bit of a necro post here, but I'm a newcomer to the game/community. Throws hat into the "would love to see this on linux" :)

I registered to this forum specifically to join the chorus of voices asking for Linux support.

Also, I'll note that pretty much all of my Linux-using machines can run ED with aplomb, and precisely zero of my two Macs have the graphics horsepower to run it at minimum, despite being current models.

"Install base" is not the same thing as "number of seats that can actually run your game". Thanks.

Created an account just to post this. Been playing Elite basically since launch, and there are times that I do not login simply because I do not want to boot into Windows. Everything on my machine runs better in Linux, and the only reason I ever boot into Windows is to play Elite, as all the other games I am actively following have Linux clients. Yes I'm lazy at some level, some times I get when I have to press a button on the remote... "WHY CAN'T YOU READ MY MIND" -with this mentality, booting into Windows is quite arduous. You're probably wondering how I got through the tedium of this post but I just care so much about Elite on Linux. So yeah, throwing my hat into this nice long thread, let's make it happen Frontier!

Yea, but has there been any indicator at all that this will -ever- be addressed?

Well, it has been kinda addressed, it's not like they haven't explained their intentions - during 2014 it was mostly "undecided", after release it has been asked several times and there has been "no plans" according to Michael talking specificially. So as for any platforms outside holy trinity - Windows, XBO and PS4 - nothing much really until they really decides to do that.

What we *know* is that they are aware of interest, they are aware of technical side of porting, they don't feel there's enough clarity about numbers and support model for Linux version as far as I am aware.

I registered an account for the sole purpose to voice my desire for a Linux client.

The only reason I have a Windows partition right now is to play ED.

With SteamOS/SteamMachines on the horizon, supporting Linux is a necessity for any developer who wants their game to have a long lifetime. Why ED wasn't designed ground-up to use OpenGL boggles me, given that OpenGL runs on Windows, Linux, OSX, and PS4, whereas DirectX only runs on Windows and Xbox. It would have been substantially less work to make it run using OpenGL first.
