Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

i bought windows, another ssd, and setup dual booting for the first time in over a decade on my linux box to play this game specifically and soley.

I'd definitely like to see a linux port. However, with open source drivers still catching up to implementing opengl 3.x in stable releases of mesa, that would mean installing the proprietary drivers and I'm not really enthusiastic about entering that fresh hell again. I like to run current kernels and debian unstable and this doesn't jive with fglrx very well most of the time.

I hope we get a Linux version, even if just unsupported or beta, soon. It's getting depressing following a game I still haven't been able to play :(

Good luck with that! Frontier is still struggling to deliver a quality and timely version for the Mac. I wouldn't hold my breath but I would think that since they already the Mac version using OpenGL and have been talking about a Playstation 4 version, they should, theoretically, be able to port to Linux more or less easily. Certainly easier than starting from scratch.

They'd have a much better time of a Linux port, as I predicted earlier in this thread that the Mac port would give them fits. As Mac gamers would probably be no where near the wanting-to-help level Linux gamers would be. Help with ports is invaluable, what better place to find space nerds than among LInux0rz, a community -already- willing to help more than complain?

anyway, given they've signed up for Microsoft Exclusivity™, doesn't matter at the moment.

I think our only hope is pressure from Valve regarding SteamOS at this point. THAT is really a viable option, and a good one for Valve and Frontier. Gabe wants SteamOS to work, and frankly I do too for more linux games, so I'm sure Valve is likely courting ports in some fashion. Please.

I paid 200 GBP for the Elite: Dangerous alpha - I'll happily pay whatever the purchase price for a Linux / SteamOS version would cost.

There you go, Frontier, one guaranteed sale.

Yeah, SteamOS is basically what developers like FD need - one solid platform, which guarantees comparingly easy porting to other distributions, also measurable sales.

So fingers crossed that Steam Machines get slow, but steady sales in 2016 so we could have at least realistic chat with FD about port.

Same here. 99.95% of my daily time is on Linux and ED is only reason why I have Windows partition.

Same here. There is only two game I use on Windows : ED, and Final Fantasy 14.

No. The open-source driver will soon have OpenGL 4.2 support with the upcoming Mesa 11. Fedora already use the dev version, and Ubuntu will probably get it on his next LTS version. We'll probably get OpenGL 4.3+ on mesa for one of the mesa 11.x version, as most of the extension are already done or are in progress. Source : http://mesamatrix.net/

Still, all proprietary drivers are OpenGL 4.5 compliant.

Currently on W7, I wanted to switch to W10.
But based on recent researchs as (https://translate.google.com/transl...rmaci-o-uzivateli-jeho-prstech-ocich-a-hlasu/), I start to be bored to this blurred privacy mood around those OS.

ED on Linux would be a good help for me to switch to Linux. Unfortunately I'm quite sure it will never happen.
So dual-boot would be still required :/

Edit: some people are septic concerning the validity of the Czech windows 10 analysis. So perhaps it is just a fake information. I let you checking on your side too if you need more info.

I too am looking to get away from windows based on recent developments and I'm sure there are a lot of people quietly contemplating the same. When push comes to shove, I think I'll just have to give up some of my Windows games and applications and move to Linux regardless of weather they are available on it or not.

Update on getting ED to run under wine/POL. I have managed to get the Launcher loading using POL, however when it comes to logging in the launcher immediately crashes as soon as you try and enter a password, all other fields/buttons/links work as intended.

Steps taken to get the Launcher to work are as follows:

Using Playonlinux i created a new bottle, installed dx10 and .net 4, crashed immediately on trying to start launcher.
Hunted down some of the errors and found my way to this page: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164320
Installed all of the relevant packages mentioned in the above post which then allowed the Launcher to actually launch.

Things that I have tried to work around the launcher crash issue include:

Copying my entire ED folder from my windows install to my POL bottle, including the frontier folders from users "local and roaming" to see if launcher automatically inserted details. No joy.

I will keep plodding away but I am no linux expert, if anyone wants to grab the baton and start running that would be great.
Will keep you posted on any developments.

Update: Managed to get the launcher working. Installed Arial font manually as installing MScore fonts caused more crashes.
The launcher will now accept details as well as 'New Computer' confirmation code. It will also install the game (had several unknown network errors but restarting the download gets you to the end).
Now produces a .net error when trying to launch the game. Please note that by installing any other .net framework apart from 4.0 the launcher will simply crash at startup.
Have tried mono 2.10.9 to no avail, will keep working on it.

good reporting. Alas WINE is really our only hope at this rate. which sucks. A native port will always be a higher performing product. Better than nothing though. thanks for the effort!

I'm still waiting for a Linux version. The last argument I heard from the devs way back was "there's so many distros" but there's not... SteamOS/Ubuntu are pretty much considered the gaming platforms now. If someone doesn't use an Ubuntu-based distro, then there are ways of getting stuff to work on other distros and that can be up to the end-user. I wouldn't expect FD to officially support anything other than a single distro. That's not a realistic expectation. That said, I WANT A LINUX VERSION!!!

Thanks. Quick update: Tried to install lib32-libwbclient and lib32-smbclient to see if that might help. Running into issues building them in ARCH through. If anyone who is running a mint/ubuntu based distro wants to give it a go, that might be able to give some insight into working around the .net error that I am experiencing atm.

Coming from a programming stance I always and I mean always have a Linux version in the pipeline, even Unity have just recognised the importance of Linux with their editor. Having ED on Linux would be a godsend and with all the other things moving to Linux it would give it a boost.

I would recommend Linux Mint though not Ubuntu (spyware edition) :)

As far as I know (I haven't installed an Ubuntu recently - it does its job on my NAS server and is, for all intents and purposes, invisible), Canonical dropped the arrangement they had with Amazon back in 2014. They were at least open about it and made it trivially easy to turn it off. Have they added more dubious components since then?

Got to agree with you EdzUp, Linux mint is where it is at for anyone considering moving over from windows or even dual booting. I have just switched over to ARCH to get my 'hands dirty' and I must admit that I am loving it, although I wouldn't recommend it for new Linux users.
