Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7
Thank you for this information.

actually we are going back. If we can't play the functions we have now in VR (flying and SRV) in the Oddyssey launcher, it means we have to restart the game everytime we get out of our ship or SRV and back. That's going back.

I also think you're mistaking how many people are playing in VR.

Id love to see the metrics, but I guess only FD have access to that. Looking at publicly available numbers on Steam, its about 5%

About 2.8% of the player base. We can only tell for sure if we get our hands on a Steam Chart, and even then it's an estimate. Steam Charts are a widely accepted source of truth around here.

O7,
🙃

I am one that plays with the Valve Index, looking forward to see how that will work with space legs!

All of the VR players on here (like 10% of the playerbase) acting like they are entitled to VR space legs?? Why. Frontier have said that this would take up considerable resources which would mean more delays to launch.

Here is my message to you VR players:

YOU are a MINORITY of the playerbase and the MAJORITY will not accept delays to Space legs just so you can sweat it out in your £500 headsets. Get back in line and realise that you should be patient. Remember, Frontier have not ruled out VR in the future.

You can't play in VR can you? It makes you violently sick doesn't it. You hate the though of people enjoying themselves doing something you can't do don't you. DON'T YOU!

We’re big fans of VR
In what game?

I paid £100 (Premium Beta) because of VR. Anyone remember the ED advert with the words 'Made For VR, at launch? The amount of money I spent on building a PC (for the first time) HOTAS, gaming chair and building the Hotas mounting from MDF and wood, a VR HMD, another PC build.

I was saving up for a better GPU On my income, about three years might have afforded me that.

I don't have much hope it ever will be. How long has this update taken since 'Horizons'? Four and a half years. Just looking at the implementation of Multi Crew, with it's 'teleportation'/Hologram mechanic speaks to me.

On the VR threads, for some considerable time, there was much apprehension surrounding future VR support, myself included, due to FD's silence over the matter, followed by.... more silence.

And as a Premium Beta customer the ED launcher is forced to update the client so I won't be able to stick with Horizons. Not that I would; I paid £100 to play the game throughout it's lifetime, and I want to play it in VR, not an out of date iteration.

Disappointment is nowhere sufficient to describe my feelings about this. At least I can now free up some space on my SSD, so every cloud, eh?

I've no problem with people enjoying things that I cannot.

I do take issue with the growing reality that many people are blaming me for my DNA.

I hope you get VR support. I honestly do.

But everyone has to be included first. Sorry.

If frontier gives VR a chance a lot more!
Alyx multiplied the sale of headsets by two!

In VR Elite is no longer a game but an experience, an immersion that allows a lot of people to really believe in it.

It's crazy to have bet on VR when it was only a niche, and to give up now when it's really becoming an emerging market. How many players once Alyx is done can come to ED if it allows VR?

It's a shame. And Rageant; this studio has often used as an excuse, it must be perfect otherwise we don't do it. Many here would accept or settle for something average, rather than nothing at all. And this philosophy, practical for escaping delay and regression, hasn't prevented the production of really bad things.

Space to walk around with VR, in 2020 it's achievable. There are enough VR titles on sitting, standing, walking and driving experiences to prove it.

Track IR5 is all you need dude,

VR extremists will not delay this game for the rest of us.

Either you board the train or get off starting from this moment. And come back when VR for spacelegs is added (6 months after release)

Cheers for the answers, Tim.

"For launch" implies further information. Is VR support being developed for an Odyssey-update post-launch?

VR is a major feature for Elite - it's widely regarded as one of the best VR games available - so axing VR support from future expansions would be extremely unwise imo. VR would be unfortunately be added to the perceived ever-growing-pile of abandoned features.

As Horizons will still support VR, what happens when one wants to play in VR: logout of Odyssey then login to Horizons?

Considering the enormous goodwill and enthusiasm yesterday's announcement brought it'd be very disappointing to apply the handbrake. 2 steps forward, 1 step back etc. Killing the golden goose is counter productive.

If production is tight with the Elite devteam being fully utilised already, then this is a good reason as any for FDev top-brass to expand the devteam further.
I fully agree with you on this one Stuart.
As a Reddit Mod you may also notice in fact that I just removed my post from reddit (that has been hanging in at the first place for the complete day) with 1300 upvotes and counter still running promoting the new DLC...
This news is a huge disappointment for me.

No VR is ???? Is that some kind of joke !!! I just dropped serious money on a new gaming rig with VR for the future in mind ! and the main game i play is ELITE....

Are you dropping VR from the main game then as well?
Or just when you're on legs, cos you know humans can't handle looking around on legs.......

SC is looking better by the second.....

Yes there has been, but if horizons continues to run on an old cobra engine (no confirmation but it's the current speculation than odyssey will be using a newer engine) then some of the new stuff may not make it.

Gotcha. This was not to ruffle any more feathers, I've shared my piece and I think deprecating VR is a huge mistake, I was just curious if this could be interpreted as "after Odyssey launches, also the followup improvements will be out of reach of Horizons = VR users". It appears not necessarily to be the case, even if the focus will most certainly (and rightly so, objectively thinking) be on building future updates upon Odyssey.
