News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Transitioned to Steam, keep the original files or not?

Cmdrs,

Anyone have any advice because they've noticed issues arising from having both the original FDEV ED game files and also the new Steam based ED game files on my system?

I'm in a quandry whether to keep both copies for when Steam goes on the blink, or whether to just use the Steam version and delete the other game copy because maybe the game will run smoother without all the duplicate files etc?

I'm not techie enough to know which way is the right way since transitioning ED over to Steam.

Thanks in advance.

Change your desktop icon to point to the steam edlaunch.exe. You can still launch ED from the desktop icon without steam running. You only need steam to update quickly.
Delete your old Frontier folder.
Don't uninstall as I believe you'll lose your configs. Not sure but I'm not going to try it.

You can run both installs (although there would be no point). It just means you have two copies of the client files (with slightly different directory structures). They won't interfere with each other at all.

Your configs and game logs are in different location (under user) and are accessed by each install. Your saves are in the cloud.

The two installs will run identically, unless they are on different disks, in which case one might be faster. Particularly if one is on an SSD and the other is on a HDD.

I found that when I moved over to Steam, my controls ended up with two separate custom.binds files in two separate locations, and attempting to remap keys in-game crashed the client. Removing both custom.binds filers and remapping my controls fixed it.

You might not have this problem, but if you do, that's what I did to fix it.

The updates are much faster to download!

You also get Steam integration, including in-home streaming (which will allow you to play the game on pretty low-end hardware) and broadcasting, if you go in for that.

Steam and Elite installs

Guys,

I originally bought the game from FD, and then got the Steam Key. When i activated the key it downloaded the game again into the steam folder. does this mean i can now un-install the original FD install?

Hi,

So if you brought EDfrom FD Store before and after it was released you have a free steam key. Does this mean you can have 2 ED accounts now or just the one , curious thats all ;) (Sorry if it`s already been asked but i cant find a reference to it being asked)

Only one.

Dang, the wording of the shop details didn't become clear to me until after I redeemed by steam key. What a bummer that is. I know for a fact I wasn't going to ever bother with skins, but it makes me feel sad that Valve's getting much too large of a cut if there's ever anything released that isn't a skin.

Wish I would have realized it earlier :c

Steam key, do I have to download game again?

Purchased game from official website and installed when it was first released.
Got steam key today but when used it asks me to download the full game again...
is there a way to have steam recognise I already have the game installed?

Yep, you do have to download it again and it installs a fresh copy in your Steam games directory. On the bright side, from that point on, ED gets updated through steam. I want to say it also preserved my control mappings but after a friend of mine said it didn't, I can't honestly remember if I used a copy of my config file that I saved off as a backup. Can someone else confirm/deny the control mappings thing?

Did you run the uninstaller inside the launcher? I think doing that might wipe your config.

When I got the steam version I didn't know about the uninstaller so I just deleted the old ED folder. Apparently that preserved all my keybinds in the user folder and the steam version just picked them up.

The steam key is nice and all but instead I just added Elite to Steam as a non-Steam game. That way ED doesn't lose out on any money.

I've only just seen this post, wow. I'm stuck. ALL of my game are on steam, but elite, I'm debating weather to merge to steam,

I have a question, If do merge over to steam, let's say steam is down, could i still used my old or current even elite files instead, as on steam i get a 4.8MB /s speed, and with the elite launcher it fluctuates to i don't even know but is longer to download patches and updates.
