Elite Dangerous Update 7 Progress

my personal fence to jump is set to #8
It's probably the more sensible "cut off" point knowing what's supposed to be part of it, and I said so myself previously I'd wait until #8, but I figured I'll make it dependent on the state of #7 now. If the trend of introducing as many bugs as resolving bugs continues I won't bother, if #7 turns out to be a decent update with marginal performance improvements, I'll hang around for another few weeks.

Though if #8 doesn't deliver significant performance improvements then that just confirms to me that Frontier simply aren't able to sort performance out adequately and it's time to let go. I bought a gaming PC last year to not have suffer through stutterfests any longer (former laptop player here), and EDO really is the sole game in my library that keeps giving me grief on that note.

I mean, I think six months is very generous for some people to wait around for the performance issues to be resolved. They say they're confident about update 8 so we'll have to wait and see. Having been lucky enough not to be affected too badly by the frame rate issues, I've really enjoyed the content that's been available. However, as we we probably all know, the space game and the on-foot game needs a more integration so it feels more 'joined up'.

I feel that the apex shuttle and the thought you can play the game without buying a ship was a mistake and is the main cause of this disjointed feeling.

While that may be (probably is, really) the source of disjointedness, I disagree that it was a mistake. The mistake was in trying to keep on-foot and in-ship separate.

Six months is six months too long for a supposedly 'released' product to be made useable for the majority - we who bought Odyssey (and the alpha) have parted with money for a product that was broken at release - which has been attributed to issues that were anything but performance by the CEO of the company - we have been fed placatory statements while the apology that was due has been shelved as it would be an admission that Odyssey was not fit for release in May.

That said, I bought a 3rd copy last week and have been playing the DLC virtually exclusively since release, warts and all! (and having a ball!)

I only mention the release as it has been continually swept under the carpet, with promises that is will be 'fixed' at an undefined point in the future, rather than an open admission that it released broken.

Hihihi. Ohhh this is the one where you called the AI a "s*mp" in a post about it.

So I need to look more into why it's being said that 3 shots were always being made and not one, because by design it's one shot BUT something has gone wonky with the way it's all visually represented which is no doubt where the confusion is. Basically me talking out loud at you to try and show I'm thinking about it o7
Go into horizons and fire the xg9 lance and you’ll see all 3 gauss charge up and fire. In odyssey all 3 charge up but only ONE fires, which it’s not supposed to do. Also in odyssey when an ai is piloting the XG9 lance they do not shoot thargoid interceptors

After the now infamous EDO launch, I will never complain about FDev delaying a release of anything. Since that day I have been waiting, what seems like a long time, to get a patch where frame rates are such that I can actually participate in settlement based missions on foot. For me Odyssey is reduced to missions where I legally pick up stuff. With frame rates at 0 - 20 I have still been killed twice even trying to do those basic collection missions because the guard's "I'm going to scan you" warning did not render before I found my self dead. That means I mainly do exploration. Even when exploring the planetary tech renders before my eyes most of the time. Whatever it takes, please, please, please up the frame rendering performance. Thanks!
Seconded. That's exactly my experience in Odyssey.

Thanks for the head up! I was about to go hunting Medusas and I use my NPC in a XG9 to save me gauss ammo so I don't have to synthesize...

Concerning all the rest, it is pretty much down to the point that the majority of players are just unable to enjoy or even play whatever Odyssey has to offer because of the low FPS and not-that-better graphics compared to Horizons overall... and I don't think Frontier will manage to improve framerate anytime soon. It seems they implemented new tech to the Cobra engine and now they have to optimize it to make it work.

Another unnoticed issue with status expired. Lot of maybe nice and helpful suggestions are skipped with "status expired" and never have been noticed by players.
Other things which might be useful are:
  • Mark stations in red or green on galaxy or systemmap to see if it has landingpads which are big enough to travel to
  • Show the landingpad which is selected for you in different color makes it easier to find the right one quicker

Sally, have you thought about starting a new thread just called 'Odyssey Whining ats?' where folk can post the same old, tired whinging salty arguments time and again and leave the bulletin updates for others who know the state of play, know Fdev are doing their best to remedy it and who are still having a damn good time with EDO anyway.

Good idea, I bet it would be a popular thread.

@sallymorganmoore

Given FDev's decision to push Update 7 out a week to fix a CG related bug, is it a fair assumption to make that we can expect an important narrative-influencing CG next week...possibly related to the Azimuth saga?

I reckon it would - I also think I could name most of the people who would be posting to it (It's the usual crowd)

I agree, here are their mugshots.

Why are you pinging Sally with a question that no one from the team will be allowed to answer? No wonder she starts each day with over 100 notifications.

Definitely something to consider for the future improvements of the Issue Tracker for sure, I agree.

It'd help with clarity on what's known and what isn't BUT right now I just wanna get as many things around the waist as possible, even if this is really unconventional right now, so we get some kind of optimal list of fixes that eventually works for as many of...everyone as possible over the next bunch of updates.

Thanks to consider it.

And... in that case, feel free to take on some of those (shamelessly listing my issues, feel free to come back to me to ask for more details, several of them affect EDH too, the criticality of each is off course in the eye of the beholder) on your waist too (never thought I will tell that to a woman...):

Issues tracker:
Missions:
Fleet Carriers:
Ship related:
On-foot:
Odyssey generic:
Keybindings:
And last but not least: some virtual flowers for your work here. Much appreciated!

Why not take it a step further and make "whining" a bannable offense. I'm sure it'd get the Streisand award for outstanding PR.
