Elite is clearly stagnating to death.. FDEV should do this instead of too much emphasis on Thargoid content..

FD could have made part (or all) of Powerplay the PvP 'layer' but bottled out numerous times even when demand was there and they had the plans in place.

However I think its far too late in EDs life to enact those plans now, and that actually beefing up PvE by repurposing existing bits (like it does sporadically with high end NPCs) is the path forward given player numbers dropping (based on Steam numbers). Glaives, spec ops, ATR (partially), top end CZ NPCs, fully randomized NPCs (wing size + engineering) should be offered for those who dare- especially if PP is going to be U17. In short let the game off the leash with what FD have already done.

ah, steam charts and starfield. a timeless classic
I am so glad I never have to look up Steam charts myself.

Regarding the saviour Starfield: I will buy it, I will play it, and it will eat into my game time and I will be playing less or little ED, because yay a new Bethesda game. For four to six weeks. And then I will be back to my usual ED schedule.

One is Skyrim in space, which will be fun for a while and then be done, one is a game where I can fly a frikkin' spaceship in VR. Not remotely the same.

@varonica
It's been two years. Might be good idea to let it go.
As for the ideas, looks like future DLC mostly.
Mind you, it might be a good idea to get them out there, since no-one else seems to be.

Generally, it doesn't sound like it's in much of a better place than PVP tbh...

Yes. I played more of the Fallout franchise though. But both went the same. I played them for a while, enjoyed them, and then I was done with them. And then I played them again six months later for a while, and then I was done again. Repeat.

Did you complete it... in 4-6 weeks?
More or less. I completed it as far as it managed to hold my attention. I played all DLCs and finished the main plot once, and also did the thieves guild and mage college in two other playthroughs I didn't finish. I played it like 15 to 20 hours a week for four to six weks, then much less for another two months or so, and then stopped. Just to compare, on average I played ED for 13 hours every week for four years.

I know Skyrim is sort of a sacred cow to some, and Starfield being touted as "Skyrim in space" makes people tingle and giving it credit before it is even released, but in the end it is just another RPG, and a Bethesda one too, which probably means it will be a bugfest at release. It will be probably a good one, but it will not be a permanent replacement for ED.

Some months ago spacebourne 2 was going to kill ED. I think that hype has calmed down too. Of course people will play other games. Would be weird if they didn't. But Starfield isn't "replacing" ED. It's a different genre.

that would be fine if this game was not plagued by cheaters and hackers modifying things at their convenience in pvp. But as human beings are the way they are and this game lacks any anticheat method, why do you want the open mode if it only provides bad mood and cheats?

starfield is a month away, does anyone think this chart is going to improve after september?
No, and I don’t expect it to go down further either, because Starfield is Skyrim in space, rather than being particularly close to what Elite provides.

If people want to think that a game is going to affect another negatively in significant ways, at least try to ensure they are somewhat close to one another.

I played it as much as it managed to keep my interest. All in all I spent maybe 200 hours on it over the years, maybe 250. I would have to look it up in Steam. Also pretty sure the main plot, all the DLCs and two of the largest side plotlines is more than "bits". Not everyone lives in Skyrim. And not everyone will in Starfield.

@Helmut Grokenberger
Have you actually played skyrim?

I will add my answer...

Never finished it, It managed to lose me somewhere along the way.
There are solid chances it will happen with Starfield too - it depends (it may manage to get me for 1-2 months, but then again while i did get CP2077 when it was 50% discounted, i never got to install and play it, yet.)

Now... ED, on steam (that counter is a bit bigger compared with ingame counter, but all in all, over 3 accounts, i have more than 8500h in Elite)

It depends. ED is massive but largely uniform, SF could be a more focussed and compact ED that balances size with stuff to do. Out of the crazy playtime I got from ED most of that is empty traversal and pressing J. If SF can cut out that empty time then it will do well.

I'd guess that a smaller percentage of serious Starfield players is going to put thousands of hours into it than Elite.

The question to ask is: What's the best somewhat realistic space game to sink 40-60 hours into if I just want something good looking and atmospheric that's also kinda grounded?

Does it matter how many current players Starfield "steals" from Elite if all potential future players will try Starfield before Elite?

Of course it will depend. As a surprise to nobody, people are different :). Some people just revere Skyrim as the best thing since sliced bread, all I can say is... meh. To me, sitting in a spaceship in VR and flying from star to star is glorious. For others it is "pressing J repeatedly". Which is fine; some people love to walk from Riften to Solitude and call it "immersion". I call it boredom. Whatever floats your boat.

Starfield will attract those who want to play Skyrim in space. Those who expect it to be a replacement for a space sim(-ish) game will be disappointed. Those who want to primarily fly a spaceship will probably still tend towards ED. Those who want to roleplay as a space pirate hero around whom the world revolves will play the latest Bethesda incarnation of your hero fantasy.

(Did it never irk anyone that, in Skyrim, you're not only the most important person in the universe, but also manage to become the leader of every major and minor faction?)

@Rubbernuke
No particular playstyle holds a majority.
Thargoids are probably your best hope for a reworked PP.
Not that i can say that will happen.
You're very doomy today... cheer up mate, maybe eat a burger or smtg....
:)
If FD had actually planned what they wanted and stuck with it I'd be happy. They have introduced and left features to die which with minimal support could have done what everyone wanted. Goids as they are now, fully formed PP and CQC should have been put in and supported as early as possible rather than so late.
